“Only basic vegetarian food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

We have not actually stayed for the night but we had lunch ordered for several people (ordered hours in advance). We found the setting very idyllic. The lunch, however, was quite basic. Usually, non-vegetarian meals have a lot to offer, but this meal was not much more than stomach filling. Not bad, but not very tasty either. Would not recommend it.

Room Tip: view on the river

A little piece of Switzerland - (well) almost!

Idyllic garden setting on banks of river which all rooms overlook. The first night you were convinced you will be swept away BUT what a lovely site to wake up to in the morning particularly with birdlife virtually on your doorstep. Neatly presented, very clean and lovely staff.

As with most Bhutan Hotels, meals are buffet style and predominantly vegetarian. A small village at end of Hotel driveway provides chance for smiling exploration of the surrounds.

Would stay here again if ever return to Bhutan.

Our small tour group stayed here for 2 nights. It's a lovely place right next to a fast-flowing river, so it was very peaceful and relaxing. It is, however, pretty far away from town so you won't be able to walk anywhere interesting.

Our room was very small and was just able to fit two twin beds, a couple of chairs, and a small table - add in our bags and there wasn't much room for anything else. However, it was clean and cozy with a high ceiling and several windows. It also had a balcony literally overlooking the river. The beds featured thin mattresses but this was consistent with all 3 of the hotels we stayed at in Bhutan. The bathroom was also small and featured a shower rather than a bathtub, but it was also fine since we preferred showers, anyway.

The grounds themselves are also beautiful - lots of flowers and green space, also with the sound of the flowing river in the background. Although there was no TV in our room, there was a communal room on the grounds where one could watch TV and perhaps get a hot drink. I never went there as I preferred to read a book in my room while listening to the river. However, my roommate did go there a couple of times and she said there wasn't much there or the TV was off entirely.

The meals were like any other food we came to expect in Bhutan - buffet style and pretty basic. They are, however, vegetarian only but I did not mind as I'm not a big meat eater, anyway. I didn't find anything overtly wrong with the food, though.

The service at this hotel is a mixed bag. We had a couple of staff be very attentive and quick to help. But, we also ran into a couple of staff members who were rather abrupt and unhelpful. At our first dinner at the hotel, service in the dining room was slow and, after waiting a while, had to wave someone over to our table to get some tea, something that is usually offered right away at any dining establishment in Bhutan. The next dinner we had at this hotel, service was much better and there was someone coming by our table every 5 minutes or so to check on us or see if we needed more tea or coffee.

Would I go there again? Probably yes. It was relaxing being so close to the river and our room was beautiful, too.

A sweet little resort on the river with comfy (but firm, as you will find in most of Bhutan) beds, lots of hot water for a long shower and an onsite restaurant. The service here is, um, relaxed, so don't be in a hurry. Sit on your balcony and watch the river go by.

Our group of ten really enjoyed the lovely setting and amenities of this hotel in Wangdu especially after three days feeding a wood stove in Bumthang. There was Internet (shared hotel computer) and those with iPhones could connect while sitting in the lobby. Many of us were vegetarian so the food was great. We just didn't get to stay there long enough, but the views were terrific for a few hours of daylight.

Room Tip: Hopefully get a room overlooking the rushing river.

We had an unscheduled but pleasant stay at the Kichu after a landslide blocked the highway to Trongsa. Located along the highway east of Wangdue Phodrang, it offers not distance views, but close up views of the water splashing over a rocky river bed trimmed with flowers and colorful shrubs. The room was a small twin bedded room, but clean and with plenty of heat and hot water. That was a welcome relief after the previous night which, due to that landslide, we spent in a fridge farmhouse without either. A small lounge and bar overlooked the gardens. No TV or Wi-Fi is available at the resort. Most dinner dishes were well prepared, but the restaurant is strictly vegetarian, except that eggs were available at breakfast.

The Kichu resort has rooms with a balcony overlooking a fast flowing river. This makes it a perfect place to sit and meditate or read or write your travel diary. The rooms were adequate for a short stay and there was plenty of hot water. The grounds were nice to sit in and relax. The only negative is what seems to be a problem with most hotels and restaurants that we encountered in Bhutan - luke warm food. Kichu provides a buffet for dinner and even when we were first into the dining room, the food was still barely warm.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room so you get a great view of the river.
