“Camping with a View.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

We loved camping at The Crossing Resort. Nice shelter for tenters to use to cook in bad weather. Great showers and location. The grasslands were beautiful. Saw many amazing birds and heard coyotes at night.

My husband and I stayed at The Crossing Resort because we wanted to visit Grasslands National Park but did not want to camp. One night, there was a tremendous electrical storm so I'm really glad we weren't camping! We stayed in the separate, deluxe suite. It was clean and cozy. The kitchen was a great size. The fridge was large enough to store all the food we'd picked up in Swift Current. (The nearby grocery store is small and has a limited suggestion so I do suggest you bring food with you in a cooler.) The couple who run the place, Ken and Johanna were very professional and quick to answer any questions I had. It was sure great to come back from a 15 km hike and be able to shower and cook a meal. There is a small propane-powered grill on the spacious balcony, so, you could grill up some burgers, etc. They ship their water in. It is safe to drink and tastes fine. Don't hog it, though. If the power goes out, in that particular suite, you will not be able to use the water. There is a generator at the main house so they are fine in that regard. On the night of the electrical storm, our power did go out for about half an hour.

I visited the Grassland National Park end of May. I arrived late that night and it was almost sunset. Johanna was really friendly and super helpful. She showed me the 2 suites on the 2nd floor and the area around the house. I chose to set up my tent at the campground for only $15. I had a great shower and they provide free wifi internet. There's a group of University students from Winnipeg doing field trip. Johanna is a great host. She prepared breakfast in the barn house. I had breakfast with the group of students and had a few laughs. It was a great stay!!! I will definitely stay there again!!!

Stayed two nights in the new two bedroom "loft apartment" which is very well appointed with full kitchen (full sized fridge with freezer, microwave, full stove) satellite TV, wireless etc. Service was pleasant and low key - just what I was looking for.

View from balcony over the edge of Grasslands park and a small pond was wonderful. The Crossing is the perfect venue for a visit to Grasslands National Park.

The Crossing suites are absolutely the best. They are self contained apartments that are in a perfect location. They are clean and spacious, right on the edge of the Grasslands National Park. Remember to do some grocery shopping as they are not a B and B.

Room Tip: The suites in the main house are perfect.

The location is excellent. The rooms are clean, comfortable and perfectly furnished, including a very well-equiped kitchenette.

The hosts, Johanna and Ken, are wonderful. Johanna and Ken are experienced grassland supporters. They have helpful tips as well as interesting stories. They have a hand in the summer Star Party. Johanna has helped create the interpretive guidebook for Grasslands National Park.

We skated on a dugout where Bryan Trottier would have learned to skate. We hiked the coulees to spy on the Bison. We climbed buttes and ridges beneath a pair of Bald eagles. Coyotes howling, prairie dogs barking and bison bulls bellowing. Badgers (we saw seven) sailing through the grass. Thanks, Parks Canada! Thanks, Johanna and Ken! Thanks, ranchers and farmers who have worked to help make Grasslands National Park!

We had neighbours in the adjoining suite. Two different guest bookings had come to the area to visit with family and to hunt (successfully) for Mule deer. They were very polite and considerate. We enjoyed some friendly and interesting conversation. Other than that, you couldn't tell there was anyone in the other suite. At night and in the morning, it was silent. I'd say it added to the experience, having some community.

November - or any winter month - is a great time to be at the Crossing Resort and to be in Grasslands National Park. The animals are in their winter-thick fur. Snow makes it easy to track where animals have gone and to guess at what they seem to have been doing.

Visit the Crossing Resort once and I'd be surprised if it did not become a regular event.

Room Tip: Both rooms are equally good

Second time at The Crossing..we camped and enjoyed the campground at The Crossing and their very clean facilities, sleeping with the wildlife is a great experience.

We stayed in the B & B this time, the rooms were very clean and well equipped with a kitchenette as well as being very comfortable. The hosts are wonderful peopleand the townfolk of Val Marie are most welcoming.

If you have not visited the Grasslands put it on your bucket list......

PS Make sure you have a good camera and a great pair of binoculars.
