“Very welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Mark and Mary made me feel like I was part of their family. The location is hard to find, but worth the seclusion. I chose the minimal accommodation, which was fine, but they treated me like I had booked the honeymoon suite. The food is excellent - stay for dinner.
I was interested in the hiking trails in nearby Tsitsikamma National Park, and they were quite challenging. This made coming back to Tranquility even more comforting.

Although the setting in Nature's Valley is beautiful, our accommodation was a disappointment. The room was very small, no privacy, and no place to sit in the room, except on the bed. -There are chairs outside but it was too cold, so we opted for upstairs in the lounge (where a nice fire was going). We found the food good, although very pricey, R150 per person for a main meal only (no choice). Starter and dessert would have been R50 extra each. We had friendly service and the bedding and towels were clean, although the pillows were like rocks. The hot pool was lovely and the beautiful surroundings made up for the disappointment of the bedroom.

Room Tip: Enquire about privacy and size of the room.

We really appreciate it when fellow hoteliers take the time to review us.

We are thrilled you both enjoyed the wonderful setting we have here in Nature's Valley. Sorry if it was a little chilly this winter but as you say we always have a welcoming fire in the bar to lounge in comfort.

As I explained pillows are a personal choice and soft ones are are in the wardrobes for your convenience.

After your departure we closed down for our annual maintenance and constructed fenced gardens for the downstairs rooms bringing seclusion for private enjoyment of the vast variety of fauna and flora.

Our cusine is very important to us and glad you enjoyed your meal. It is priced for locally sourced fresh ingredients cooked infront of our guests and served with home made bread. We always have a choice except for line fish which is always in the hands of Mother Nature.

Thanks for the comments on the Hot Pool In winter its a real therapeutic boost !

Mary and I hope to see you soon when your guests allow best wishes,

Mark&Mary

We were greeted on arrival by the chef/manager who was also from England. He was incredibly helpful and led us to our honeymoon suite. The room was fantastic and really good value. The hotel feels like it is situated in the middle of the jungle. There is a hot tub and a small plunge pool to relax. We booked ourselves in to eat that night. We were the only people eating and the chef came over and basically just cooked whatever we wanted. He had acquired some gurnard earlier that day so we opted for that and the food was excellent. He tailored the food to our tastes and even served us himself. Overall it was a relaxing and luxurious stay. We would love to come back.

This was such a lovely little place, and the surroundings are amazingly beautiful!
Very friendly staff and they offer free Kayaking to all guests.
They have 2 small pools (One cold and another heated).

This is a place to just go and relax. They also very close to some of the most beautiful hiking trails you will ever experience!

My only disappointment was that the downstairs rooms are a bit claustrophic, and you have no real privacy unless you lock up everything and close all your blinds.

Although the rooms were very clean, the ceilings were dirty with all mosquitos that had been squashed (Mosquitos are a huge problem in that area). The bathroom was also incredibly dark with only one light inside, so you cant really see what you are doing. Shower ceiling also needed cleaning as it was full of this black mildew which clearly is a problem.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
It would have been 5 if the above issues were looked into and the rooms were a bit more private.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms upstairs instead of the downstairs ones. They a bit more expensive but worth the p...

This comfortable hotel, surrounded by hills and set just off the beach in Natures Valley boasts some almost preposterously idyllic surroundings.

Despite there being a pub next door, the hotel was quiet, cosy and perfectly equipped for a romantic stay for two nights.

However great the surrounding, it is in the gastronomy department that this place really shines. We had breakfast and dinner both nights and the food was simply flawless. Fresh and seriously local produce (one meal was sourced almost entirely from Mark's farm and fishing rod) cooked simply but imagination and flair. Heaven.

Mark and Mary, thank you for making us feel so welcome.

We would return in a heartbeat.

Natures Valley is a beautiful spot - although not 'isolated' as one reviewer has posted. It is five minutes drive away from the massive highway that now skirts South Africa's entire garden Route. However, the surrounds are representitive of the magnificent original coastal forest that has now been largely dessimmated due to excessive development. The lack of petrol stations, large hotels and shopping malls make this locality unusual and very special indeed.

Tranquility Lodge is pleasant enough: the chef and staff on duty were friendly and the breakfast we had was good although not excellent. Our main disappointments were as follows:-
1. The bed in the 'superior' room we were given was very small - a double bed, not, as one would expect for the prices charged ( a Queen or King-sized). My husband and I are averaged sized people and the lack of space did not lead to the most comfortable night.
2. Persistent noise from the TV and music centre in the bar/dining area was disturbing and disruptive to our quality of sleep and to the quality of our entire experience. The lodge is very close to the sea and surrounded by a lovely garden and the nearby natural forests. Most visitors, I think may prefer the sounds of forest birds and the ocean to he chef's choice of music.
3. We needed to rise early due to business appointments and a long travel schedule . This was good because sleeping-in after 7.00 am would have been impossible. The Tranquility Lodge property borders on a workshop and the neighbour started up some very noisy power tools at that time. This was followed by a very large truck ( refuse removal ?) which did not turn off its engine and stayed parked right outside our bedroom for about 20 mins. The name "tranquility' certainly did not fit our experience.

Room Tip: The owners of this lodge should try and negotiate with their neighbors so that the use of heavy mach...

Good day JaqTarr

I hope the lond drive back to Windhoek was a safe one. The massive road skirting the Garden Route has its uses ! And with the best will in the world is at least a 15 minute drive up the beautiful Grootriver Pass.

Also many thanks for the kind words left in our visitors book I know as Environmentalists you found our fauna and flora most special.

We apologise if noise was a problem I see you also had the same issue in Clanwilliam. We allow our dining guests to plug into our I pod dock between 6pm and 10pm always at a reasonable volume,( sadly not always my choice of music) after the forest birds have settled for the evening.

As we discussed whilst I was making the bread we try to make all our guests stay a pleasant one and after that extremely long non stop trip from Namibia I know sleep was paramount.

I hope the property you viewed in the morning here in Natures Valley was suitable and when you move in and get established you can help me negotiate with all the waste contractors to come a little later and switch off their engines whilst loading.

The property next door was under renovation and thankfully is now completed minus the workshop as it is now a holiday home.

Mary and I hope to see you in The Valley again soon.

Kindest wishes

Mark

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

My wife and I travelled the Garden Route recently on a belated honeymoon and Nature's Valley is without a doubt one of the best and least travelled spots along the garden route coast.

I feel it is important, especially for foreign tourists, to manage their expectations of the accommodation on offer. It's important to realise that Nature's Valley is, in comparison to other towns along the coast, extremely isolated, with only one small convenience store and one bar/pub. Consequently, food and supplies incur a greater cost to transport in and this reflects on the both the variety and availability, especially food. So please, manage your expectations accordingly and don't whine about it too much on TripAdvisor.

Now that that little diatribe is out of the way, if you are looking for a truly secluded and natural beach, either at the start or end of your garden route trip, you really need to visit Nature's Valley. The beach is duned and protected, which means that none of the houses or buildings encroach on the beach and are invisible from the main stretch of the coastline. Tranquility lodge is located directly behind the main dune, and the beach is literally a 2 minute walk, if that.

Mark (the manager and chef) was very friendly in that special, relaxed way that most South Africans and converted expats are, and gave us some recommendations on game reserves and national parks along the east coast. I had ordered a beach picnic the evening we arrived. The picnic contents were lovely and humorous at the same time. There was some lovely J.C Le Roux sparkling wine, with some nice cheese and salads, but what the energy and protein bars were doing in there I'm not quite sure. Again, one can't get too worked up about these things and you've got to just say TIA sometimes. We were the only ones on the entire gorgeous beach, watching a beautiful sunset. What more can you ask for?

Anyhow, breakfast was very good, healthy and filling at the same time. My wife is vegetarian and was happy with two servings of the yogurt, muesli and kiwi fruit. We did not have dinner at Tranquility, but it did look tasty.

We stayed in Beetle Room, which is nice and quite isolated. The room was clean and spotless. I had paid for rose petals to be laid out on our arrival. I guess no roses were available because bougainvillea petals had been laid out. Again, TIA, but they were still lovely. The rock pool/hot tub is great to have a dip in and relax.

Tranquility lodge lost one mark for me for the price, which I thought was a little high, and for mixing up our beach picnic order, which was also supposed to have strawberries and chocolates in (they more happily reimbursed us after I pointed out the error). But in every other way Mark and Mary were both immensely accommodating and helpful.

Another major plus for us was that Tranquility offer their kayaks on the lagoon free of charge, which is a brilliant was to spend the afternoon as the sun sets behind the mountain.

Mary and I are delighted at such a detailed and informative review that will really assist the traveler as they discover the diversity and beauty of the Garden Route especially Nature's Valley. We are so pleased your Honeymoon was all you hoped for and wish you both a wonderful future together.

We have not increased our accommodation rates for 2013 /14 and hope not to have to do so for the foreseeable future to offer good value for money.

Also for this year we have negotiated discounts at most of the popular attractions for our guests to make your Rand go that little bit further.

All our best wishes and see you on your anniversary !
