For our anniversary my wife and I decided to drive around Lake Ontario. We crossed into the U.S. at Lewiston, NY and made our way east. We crossed back into Canada just east of Gananoque on the day of our anniversary and were looking forward to dinner at Smugglers Inn. We wanted a restaurant with a view and, of course, one with good food and this place was one of two recommended by the Gananoque hotel where we were staying.
As my wife has Celiac disease we had called ahead to speak with the sous chef. We were assured that they could accommodate her allergy. When we arrived we sat on the patio which offered a wonderful view of the 1000 Islands and we were hungry for a fresh fish dinner but when the server (finally) arrived...double disappointment! We were told that, not only had they "run out" of fish, but they didn't have any items on the menu that were considered gluten-free. It seems all the sauces and seasonings they use are shipped in, not made on-site.
Our server told us that they could prepare a salad, which would be gluten-free. Umm, no thanks. A salad was not quite what we had in mind for our anniversary dinner on the shores of the Saint Lawrence!
