“Nice facilities, Poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

We arrived Omoa on our way from Livingstone - Guatemala to Roatan, and we chose Roli's place as it seemed to be the most mentioned hostel in town.
We took the double bed room with private bathroom and T.V.
The room was really good for the cheap price we paid. There is a shared, good equipped kitchen, but not well maintained - there were spider webs inside the pots closet and the refrigerator was unplugged and dirty.
The one big downside of the place is the service level. As mentioned in previous reviews, its correct. I have to clarify, its not like they did anything wrong to us, but when ever we tried to talk to the lady which was there (we think she is Roli's wife/partner), she gave us the filling we were not wanted. We actually didnt realy get to face Roli , as the señora was there most of the time.
If you look for a good cheap room, and you dont plan to have any communication with the staff, this is your place.

Hola Shahar n Ilana K, Thanks for your review you did nail it to the point " If you look for a good cheap room, and you dont plan to have any communication with the staff, this is your place. "
That`s what we are : affordable rooms clean and save, we do have all the info's you need posted in English and Honduras Tips magazines in the rooms. Sorry about the spider webs inside the pots closet and the refrigerator was unplugged and dirty . We do unplug refrigerators and TV and everything else to save energy and because of the frequent lightning storms we have. We lost to many equipments.

The price and facilities are top notch. Roli was not has friendly and helpful as other hostels we stayed at. Also the women we spoke to on the phone while making a reservation was not very accommodating of our limited english. Overall I would return as the it was cheap and well maintained however some changes to the owners could really make it the best value in Omoa.

Hola Daniel S, thanks for your review, Glad to hear you would return. You are correct in saying " some changes to the owners could really make it the best value in Omoa. " Yes I have changed over the years but not my place and that`s why ( I think ) the backpackers coming for . Or do they come to have a chat with the owners ? If I am honest since about 2 years we are maintaining the place with not making any money. You have seen it. Omoa has nothing to offer anymore. The beach is part of the past . It is back to a simply stop over. I keep my place open for the very few Backpackers need a save and clean place to stay . I had to find a other kind of income and that`s why I don`t spend much time with my clients to chat.
Have a nice travel

Roli is a Swiss master-machinist living now in Honduras 16 yrs.
He has travelled the world & maintains a lovely, tastefully decorated property

His place in Omoa is large, accommodating & clean . Wifi, nice rooms. Hammocks & camping for backpackers traveling on the cheap!

Excellent beach food is 100 yards away: a gal cooking over a wood fire, turning out perfect breakfasts etc

As an aside, Roli's now an area mgr of the company making Swiss Army knives. If your lucky, you might get an affordable knife & a room or hammock or lawn for your tent, all of quality.

Useful orientation is provided on pressing subjects to a any traveler, by posted wall signs. Read the signs to answ just about any question

In short, for the price, you can't find better services or ambiance

Cheers

Dr. Mark Head

We stayed in Roli's Place for only one
night (private room with bathroom - about 16 Dollars) and we really enjoyed it. We were welcomed very friendly, in our room were hardly any mozzies (although the place in general was full of them), it was clean (you could finally even flash your toilet paper!),we could use free bikes and were invited to use Roli's shuttle service (which made the otherwise long trip to San Pedro Sula sooo much easier). The only downside is the cleanlines of the kitchen because it is outside, full of bugs, water didn't run etc. Bring your own pots and cutlery and then you can use the gas stove. But all in all,we would definitely come back and despite all the complaints about the owner,we really enjoyed talking to him and being at his place.

Ok. The grumpiness of the owners is in NO WAY EXAGGERATING... get that much wrapped around your head.
The Good:
The place is easy to find (the locals are very familiar with it), and depending on the load you're carrying, its a pretty decent walk or a quick tuk tuk for 10 Limps. The accomodations are average but the grounds are aesthetically pleasing and very well kept... super "switzerland". You can tell they work hard to keep the place so pretty.
The Bad:
LOTS of mosquitos so even with tons of repellent everyone there was being eaten alive - over 40+ bites on me & counting.... they really should put up mosquito screens around the common area so that people can actually ENJOY sitting out there or chilling in the hammock and actually ENJOYING the colorful landscaping. Every other guest i spoke with had issues with dozons of small bites around the ankles etc. upon waking in the morning after sleeping in the beds (we were in the Dorm, so I can't speak for the private rooms) - and i actually had to switch beds the second and third night due to large, flying, red ants & other small flying insects landing around my pillow when i went to sleep. Yuck. Also, the fan is on a timer, not coming on until 630pm or so, and off at 6am... so the Dorm is HOT and you can't leave the door open... unlike Vampires, mosquitos etc. don't require an invitation to pass the threshold.
The kitchen works fine, the fridge keeps things relatively cool, but not cold - yet it was nice to be able to cook for ourselves, so bonus there.
The Ugly:
For "flashpackers", the internet access is alright, although the internet area is very small & only suited for two people, AND right in front of the "warden's office". It gets shut off at 8pm, and you ARE NOT PERMITTED to use Skype at any time to check in with friends/family, so keep that in mind. There are more rules and "No-no's" posted around the facility than I've ever seen in my life... these guys are pretty much Nazi's when it comes to this stuff, so be prepared. They WILL yell & scream at you if you break a "rule" and expect that you have read every single posted one - and they are everywhere, so good luck. If you have any questions, read the signs, as they will snarl at you as they stomp you over to the "note" posted instead of simply answering a question.
A Mixto:
The salvation of the place is the free kayak and bike rentals. We had a ball kayaking to a small beach (saw some really pretty jellyfish) and riding the bikes around... although you are not permitted to take them to the nearby waterfalls (for whatever reason) OR take them into the nearby town (Puerto Cortes) to use the ATM. But exploring the little village and getting back and forth with groceries or fresh fish sold on the beach is a nice option to have. I would add the "free" drinking water as another plus, but the bottle was empty as much as it was full, so there was not always clean water - unless you went out and bought it... so don't count on that.
I thought I would add a bit about transportation: Catching the bus OUT of Omoa (to Guatemala for me) was interesting - although the sign at Roli's says if you make it out to the road by 630am you can catch/flag down the express bus - it was not true for me. The bus didn't even slow down and waved "NO" as it zoomed by. I waited about 40 minutes for that experience, and then another 15 for a local bus to the border - and several collectivos to my final destination... no big deal, but worth a mention.
This hostel itself (other than the excessive bug issues) is an acceptable place to stay, pretty landscaping etc., but again, unless you manage to completely avoid the owners, who really seem NOT TO ENJOY PEOPLE AT ALL, be prepared for some major Debbie Downer Syndrome experiences.
Im adding a bunch of pics I took so you can see the pretty grounds etc., but didn't get a chance to take any of the actual dorm room.. sorry!

I should not respond to a review like this at all but naming me a Nazi that`s just to much .!! What kind of professional writer like the editor ( Lisa DeChavan ) clams to be , would write something like this and what kind of web page editor permitting and publishing reviews with this kind of text ?? Lisa wanted to have free accommodation in exchange of a article on her Web Page what I denied . The only persons get free accommodations at Roli`s Place are the drivers and tour guides .
one more thing: she stayed 5 days at Roli`s it says it all.

Roli's Place is ideal for the budget traveler. For about 13$ US a night, we were impressed on how much value we got. Close to the beach, clean, comfortable rooms, lots of extras like bikes, kayaks, laundry area and soap to boot. At first we were thinking of staying a night or two but ended up staying four nights. We felt like home with the nice kept grounds. Anything we needed like toilet paper or towels was provided immediately. Highly recommended.
