So we, like it seems so many others, found ourselves checking into Roli's place with some apprehension as we had read the reviews. The reason we still used the place was because it was BY FAR the cheapest place in town. Yes, the woman who greeted us (if you can call it that) was not the most hospitable but we decided it would be a challenge to make her smile and we completed that challenge in the first 10 minutes.
We were shown our room, a private double detached shed on legs. It was basic but clean. We had a fan we could use whenever we wanted. Mosquito nets on windows, and a convenient hook for us to use our own net inside. One of the many signs also stated nets could be provided. We were happy with our room and felt quite at one with nature, especially when the biggest spider we have ever seen appeared in the corner.... don't worry, you can take the room.... we dealt with the spider!
The grounds were nice and well kept. The kitchen was well equipped. The quiet wifi spot was always available and nice and quiet. The bikes and kayaks were available when we stayed too.
We met Roli on a number of occasions. First impression was always a little gruff, but with just a little perseverance it was clear this gruffness was not intentional and Roli was in fact very helpful every time we hassled him. He even went as far as to give us a little advice on buses, even though he always drives his pick-up truck, and the sign clearly states that "Roli does not know about buses".
The signs and the rules are obviously the result of past problems. These, along with the gruffness need to be taken either with a pinch of salt or a sense of humour, and everything will be fine.
All in all we had an interesting and enjoyable couple of days at Roli's, and for the money you really can't go wrong.
