“Therapy for the mind, body and soul!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

We spent two weeks with Alex and John and their team, Haley, Aiden and in the second week Victoria. Together they create an ambience of both peace and great fun which all guests seemed to respond to. During the first week I did an art course, Karen was a super teacher, whilst my husband chilled or borrowed a bike to explore the area. Both of us joined John's walking group in the second week. Beautiful walks, not too short but aimed perfectly for the ability of the group, always back just in time for lunch! The food was excellent and our room was lovely, a perfect shower which suited us very well. The salt water swimming pool was a joy, no intense chemicals. The Chateau soon felt like home, the company was good and if one wished for a bit of solitude outside there were plenty of places in the grounds, maybe under the walnut trees. Others enjoyed the French course whilst we were there, they were also enthusiastic about what they had been doing. We just can't wait to go again to L'Age Baston. Though we feel that one of us should try Alex's cookery course next time! We recommend this holiday very highly.

Room Tip: Just ask Victoria's advice and give her your requirements! W think that some rooms have shower o...

Chateau L'Age Baston is a beautiful building in gorgeous grounds and run with love. Hosts Alex & John have created a chance for guests to fall in love with their home as they have and they share superb meals (thank you Alex) flowing wine and entertaining conversation with their guests. The outside world drifts away as guests focus on learning their chosen theme ( painting, cooking, writing, walking in new terrain) and to call this holiday stunning is not hyperbole but understatement. Many guests return again and again. Anne Bosset was an inspirational
art teacher who tutored both an absolute beginner and the very accomplished with elan.
This was the sort of holiday that makes it hard to readjust to life at home. Perfection. Book soon!

Alex and John are excellent hosts and you can tell they enjoy what they do as you immediately feel at home. It's so laid back it's wonderful. The food .... well what can I say.... Alex is so creative and it's made with love. The best alarm call in the morning is the noise the donkeys make asking Alex for their breakfast ! I did a bit of walking around sunflower fields and in the woods. Delightful. Loved the local towns. Next time I will paint as all the people in Anne Bosset's class said she was inspiring and they learned so much from her.

Room Tip: I loved room 5 but all the rooms were gorgeous. They have very high standards at L'Age. The pho...

I have just returned from a weeks walking holiday at this outstanding venue and I can only say it is one of the very best holidays I have ever had. The Chateau is beautiful yet homely and the welcome and treatment we received from John and Alex and aides and Hayley was second to none. We were treated to outstanding cuisine At every meal. The chateau and its surroundings were in glorious and provided hours of incredible walks...from the comments and work of the people doing the art course it was obvious they had a great time and the tutoring from Anne the art teacher was of the highest standard. I will definitely visit again and hope we get the glorious weather that we were treated to this time. It really was an amazing experience.

Room Tip: All the rooms are unique and beautiful.

Thanks very much for your postive review about our Walking and Painting courses at L'Age Baston. It means a lot to us to be able to pass on these kind words to our course tutors, Alex in the kitchen and Hayley and Aiden; our resident helpers.

We hope you will visit us again in the future.

Many Thanks - Victoria.

We have just returned from a week long art course run at this chateau, so to me its more than just a hotel review. L'Age Baston has been run by Alex and John for 21 years so they know exactly what they are doing and this provided for a very homely stay rather than a typical hotel experience. The chateau is comfortable but has not been renovated to in an inch of its life, so expect sloping, creaking floors in places and clean large rooms, with old furniture in keeping with its ambience, with views over the courtyard or surrounding countryside. Our room was a very large double with en suite shower room. Tea and coffee are always available to make in the guest kitchen or in the art studio and there is an honesty bar for pre dinner drinks.
Breakfast is continental with a good selection of cereals, fruit, pastries etc. Lunch is 3 courses and dinner 4 courses served in French style with cheeses before dessert. There is no choice in terms of a menu but with Alex cooking everything fresh she accommodates food allergies and the food served is so varied I found myself tucking into everything put in front of me. Coupled with wine served at no extra charge throughout the meals I was very pleased with their carefully thought out meals and the size of portion offered. John and Alex also hosted a 20's theme cocktail party one evening before dinner, no extra charge as well as the 'art viewing' with champagne on the final evening. If the weather permits meals are taken outside in the courtyard.
All guests arrive the same day so by the end of the week it felt like a big house party because the atmosphere is so relaxed. There were as many repeat guests as there were new. As you all eat together at a particular time, some people might not feel this would suit them and it is important to understand that this is a collective type of holiday based around the courses on offer. Partners can go at reduced rate and just relax but it is a very quiet location 20 minutes walk from the town and may not suit everyone.
The art course has to be mentioned because it was so good, the tutor extremely competent and helpful.
There is a solar heated outdoor swimming pool, wifi, nice surroundings with donkeys and other animals.
One thing I would suggest is clothing layers, the weather was variable, the old chateau not the warmest place so be prepared!
Would I go there again - yes and this is probably the best endorsement I can give.

Room Tip: There are not many rooms so really its a choice of single, twin or double, with bath or shower.
