Stayed for 5 nights late April 2008. Resort experience mirrored the many reviews here. Very good value, would go back tomorrow. One major complaint: impossible to escape the music thumping until 0130 every morning (and the same bad songs every night). Take earplugs.

Rooms: clean, functional. A/C, minifridge. Note that you should not keep any open food or beverage containers in the room (even if emptied), as the many tiny ants will find it.

Beds: king-sized, hard mattress with springs palpable.

Food: functional. Breakfast omlette was good, especially after adding bacon and cheese (not at omlette station). Fresh OJ was excellent, but disappeared after Day 3. Lunch and dinner was variable, could usually find something palatable. Would recommend showing up early for meals, not everything was replaced. As well, at the cook station ask for fresh-cooked items, as the pre-cooked fish or pork was typically way overdone and dry. No GI issues encountered, and I did eat fresh vegs.

Drinks: weak, variable quality. Recommend bringing your own (large-ish) travelmug, to cut down on trips to the bar. Some bartenders made tastier drinks than others. Spanish coffee (highlighted in many of the photos) was uniformly excellent (and strong). Coffee was in general very good (some variability). Beer was refreshing if weak. As a test, banged back 4 glasses in about 10 minutes to no/zero/zip effect. No swim-up bar (I consider this a good thing, for one obvious reason).

Beach: very good. Excellent snorkelling just off the beach (saw a puffer fish less than 8 feet from shore)! Reef goes on forever. Please remember not to touch the coral, it is very very fragile and I would like it to still be there when I go back. Provided equipment is passable, if you don't know how to snorkel just ask at the dive shop. No jellies when we were there.

Activities: okay, but are not really my thing. Walk up the hill was good, with short visit to small farm. Amazing small banasas served up, better than any other I have ever tasted. Havana excursion was just okay, would instead recommend renting a taxi and seeing the city that way. Guide has a script he has to follow.

Resort grounds: large, clean, colourful. Keep an eye out for smallish holes in the grass near the pool, they hold land crabs (how cool is that?)! Decent if uninspired pool area.

Staff: excellent. Well, front desk was not always perfect.

Safety: no issues. Small lock-box in room if you want for passport etc.

This resort is the cheaper of the two in Jibacoa...the more expensive being the Superclub Breezes. It has some advantages over the Breezes though - the grounds are more spacious, nicer gardens and each block of rooms is on ground level with a small patio out front.
We went for the week of March 20-27th and found the weather beautiful at that time - the first few days were warm and calm, but the last few days were quite windy and cooler. There are quite a few things to do at Jibacoa:
1) Snorkeling. The reefs just a few hundred feet off the beach are very beautiful with a large range of different corals and fish, and some invertebrates like sea urchins, lobsters etc. The reef is in better shape than most I have seen in places like Mexico. However, I think their days are numbered because many resort guests are ignorant of how fragile the reef is. If you go snorkeling here PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NEVER NEVER TOUCH THE CORAL, DO NOT STAND UP/WALK AMONGST THE CORAL. You should always swim above the coral and avoid touching anything at all costs. Even if you can't see anything under you, by standing up on the reef you are almost always destroying something. Reefs like this take a beating from tourists and the corals die, even if they are not broken.
2) Beach. The beach is quite wide and very pretty with lots of trees and thatch umbrellas. You can walk a long way in both directions, although once you are out of the resort areas, the large amount of garbage washed up on the beach becomes evident (the resort staff regularly clean up the beach in front). It has quite a natural feel -- more so than the Breezes portion of the beach.
3) Walking or hiking. The staff hired to facilitate activities run hikes and walks three times a week up the mountain behind the resorts and down through farms. This is very nice and well worth it as the guide provides lots of information. The staff at the resort are REALLY kind and sincere people regardless of whether or not guests tip.
4) Day trips - you can do guided excursions to Havana (very recommended!!), Varadero (not sure why we did this....did I go to Cuba to see other tourists?), as well as a river tour, catamaran etc. These are a little expensive but again the guides on these trips put a lot of effort into giving you lots of information about Cuban life, history, politics and the area that you are visiting. They take their jobs seriously and we really appreciated them.

The resort itself is not super polished, but it is very clean, pleasant and the staff are REALLY EXCELLENT. There is a local Cuban music band who are wonderful and perform most nights sometimes with the dance troupe. The dancers are...well, lets just say, its difficult to take your eyes off them!!!! And how do they move like that???

Probably our least favourite aspect was the food at the buffet. Breakfasts were very good (excellent bacon, omellettes). We found that lunch and dinner were ok, but the food is generally rather bland. Probably 100 kilograms of garlic per day in the buffet would have helped.....Its not clear to me whether this is catering to the clientelle (often unadventurous Canadians) or whether this is simply because they don't tend to cook with a lot of spices. In any case, usually we could find something that was really quite nice at each meal....

All in all, I think the best aspects of our trip was seeing the music/dancing that seems to be a core part of Cuban culture, the extremely friendly Cubans, the beach/snorkeling...and seeing how some people in the world manage to get by without all of the 'stuff' we end up thinking we need in 'capitalist' society. Sure they would like it....but seeing a place where many people don't have it makes you realize that its really not necessary to have 100 pairs of shoes, and to buy new fuzzy-logic toe-nail clippers every year from Walmart. I'm not saying that the Communist regime is optimal (Fidel and Raul and co could start by spreading around some of the tourist dollars they are getting).....its just that going to Cuba highlights how much of our society isn't optimal either in other ways.

Enough - go there! Be respectful of the wonderful Cubans and their wonderful reefs.

My partner and I just returned from a very enjoyable and relaxing one week stay at Cameleon Villas Jibacoa. I will not waste alot of space here repeating all of the positive comments that you will find in the previous reviews. I'll only say that this was our 8th trip to Cuba and you would be hard pressed to find a better 3 star all inclusive resort anywhere in Cuba.

Therefore we were saddened to discover that a few items of women's clothing had gone missing from my partner's suitcase.
Naturaly we suspected it was the work of a light fingered chamber maid so out of principle we reported it our tour rep who reported it to hotel management. The maid was sent to our room and adamently denied having taking anything from the room and that was the end of the incident. I'm only writing this as a warning to others to keep tabs on your stuff. No one else reported thefts to our knowledge so it may have been an isolated incident. Hopefully hotel management will read this review and take action to correct the problem so that the hotel's good reputation can be preserved.

We stayed at the Cameleon Villas Jibacoa from March 20th to the 27th, 2008 thru Transat.
The flight from Halifax was fine. We ran into a slight problem at the Varadero airport but this does not reflect onto the Cameleon. My husband was pulled aside and taken into a room, asked a few questions, had to open his luggage, and they looked thru it a bit. I was already outside the airport and was a bit worried, but he said it was no big deal. He didnt have anything to hide so he was not nervous. He said that the lady that looked thru his suitcase was very nice but did not speak English, so it was brief. She held up his dental floss and asked what it was. We figure it is because he has a dark complection, (could pass for Cuban) and another guy that was checked also was even darker. I am only telling you this so if it happens to you, do not freak out. If you are not hiding anything, you have nothing to worry about. They probably check a few people on each flight. This was our 3rd trip into the Varadero airport and this is the first time anything has happened.
We arrived at the Cameleon around noon time. Our room was not ready, so we got a drink at the lobby bar, changed our clothes in the bathroom and went on the beach. Went to lunch at 1pm and by then our room was ready.
Room 12. (not round roof) We had never stayed at a 3 star before, but the room was fine. Large shower, no tub. Liked the fridge in the room, very handy. All week the room was kept clean. We asked for 2 extra pillows a few days in and received them the same day. Air conditioning worked good and not noisy. Bed was comfy, 2 extra blankets in the closet. Maid even folded our clothes that we left on the chair. We left gifts daily for the maid, (we had 2 different ones during our stay) Had various towel art daily. The only complaint and no biggie, was it was too bad there was no screen on the patio door. We left the room door open alot and misquitos get in the room, but we did not get even one bite by anything during our stay. But other people did, I believe by misquitos. They must not have liked our smell, lol.
Beach was great. If you want the Varadero beach, do not go to Jibacoa. It is very different. Bring water shoes and snorkling equipment. My husband cannot swim and even he is hooked on snorkling now. The fish are amazing. You can borrow snorkles etc from the resort and he used these, I had my own. They had life jackets hanging by the catamaran, peddleboats, you could use. We were able to snorkle 5 out of 8 days. The other 3 days were red flag. Very rough waves. I only saw 2 jelly fish on the beach on one of these days, but I wasn`t patrolling looking all day for them. Never saw any in the water. The beach was very large with lots of space and chairs, lots of shade. I walked over to the Breezes beach and it was a red flag day, so hardly anyone was on the beach, but the chairs were out and very crowded together.
The food at the buffet was good. Not a huge selection, but I could identify everything and ate most everything. Did not like the pizza at all. They had a bottle of Tabasco out most days and I used that quite a bit. The food was a bit repetitive, but I think I gained a few pounds actually. They had ketchup and mustard, jams, syrup, oil vinigar dressings. Ice cream was only at lunch. They had a big dinner on Easter with roast of pork, roast turkey, delicious chocolate cake. There were hotdogs and pannini ham and cheese sandwiches at the pool bar available from about noon to suppertime. Lunch starts at 1pm and supper 7pm. I think breakfast started at 7am or so. Best time to eat was right when they opened. There is only one a la carte, we did not bother booking it. There are a bunch of cats that hang out in front of the buffet, which are cute, one is always up on the roof. They were around the resort, here and there. They did not bother anyone that I could see. They were friendly but no one really would get close enough to pat them.
The front desk staff were excellent. I believe if you treat someone as you want to be treated then they will do the same. They were really nice and friendly, and accomadated your requests. One girl actually gave me a nice bracelet when I checked out, and she also came out to the bus to say goodbye. I would rate the staff at this resort as 5 star all the way. I had several hugs and cheek kisses the day we were leaving from different bartenders and staff. . The staff and fellow travellers were a very fine bunch. Being a smaller resort you get to know everyone. The bartenders, especially at the lobbey bar are the best I have seen, the drinks are picture perfect. With the sprinkles, fruit etc. The spanish coffees are to die for, very time consuming, perfectly made, even when Ruddy had to make probably dozens in an evening, each one was perfectly layered. I tried to make an effort to use my very limited spanish, I had brought a tiny Spanish English book called Fast Talk from Lonely Planet and you could tell they really appreciated my efforts. One bartender Luis has quite the dry sense of humour and he would make me use Spanish to order and help me out with the pronunciation. We tipped sporadically, sometimes we didn`t have any cuc on us, but generally I would say we spent about $10cuc a day. We gave out gifts to workers we had met and they truly appreciated it.
The grounds were lovely, lots of space, not crowded at all even tho the resort was full. Lots of birds singing, flowering shrubs etc. Only saw 1 lizard and 1 gecko. Saw 1 crab on the beach.
Pool was great, quite deep on one side for swimming, very clean, with a great view of the ocean.
Entertainment, was late afternoon around the pool. You could join in if you wanted. We only went to the evening entertainment once, it was ok, and stayed a little bit after for the disco. Others went every night and to the disco. It varied on how late it stayed open, depending on how many people were there. No later than 2am. Sometimes 11pm. The only drawback to this resort was the loud music from the disco, it could be heard quite a ways away. We were in 12 so it was not so bad, but anyone in a room behind the disco must have beeen irritated. Alot of people asked to be moved and I believe they were accomadated if at all possible.
We went on an organized hike to the top of the mountain above Breezes. The view was worth the climb, tho I thought I was going to pass out when I got to the top. Wear sneakers for sure. The hike comes out in a farm yard and then down the road back to the resort. I had wished I had brought some things with me for the locals (gifts) so the next two days we took a walk back up the road in the mornings and gave some things out. The asked for soap, clothes, shampoo. We gave out treat bags of candy to the children among other things. We met a very nice family and they invited us into their house. Everyone was very gracious and friendly. I found this area very different from Varadero. Lots of cows, horses, pigs, roosters, goats on the side of the road.
We rented a cab and driver for 6 hours for $90.00cuc and went to Havana. You could have up to 4 persons in the car. Orlando was really great, spoke English. We have been to Havana before so we knew what to expect. We liked this better than the bus tour. The 4 of us gave a huge tip $20cuc as the taxi driver did an excellent job. We found a pub to eat in, O Reillys, which was in no way Irish, and really the food stank, but it was cheap. As soon as we left about a block up we spotted the restaurant we had planned on eating in La Dominica. Oh well next time.
It was a lovely week and I would certainly go to this resort again. The price was good and the people the best.

Hi!
What great adventure we have just returned from. A most agreeable place to vacation. The beach and snorkeling were simply superb. The grounds were magnificent with all of the flowering trees and shrubs.
Great resort in general, albeit structurally a bit tired here and there, but satisfactory.
Food was quite good, considering limited available local ingredients. Buffet had lots of variety. A la carte soiree was a bit over-rated.... a good effort, but more selection available at the main buffet.
Met some very nice people ... but funny that many folks did not know how to interact with a couple of guys on holiday..... We are people who love to visit with others, and found it odd to experience such avoidance. ...... however, we managed to read a lot of books, and enjoy the warm weather ---- we were glad for the break from our Ontario winter, and also glad to come home to April showers! We actually saw some colour in our back garden today!
Cheers! Bill and John
