We stayed at the Cameleon villas for one week and I wished we could've stayed longer. We've travelled many places in Cuba but this place is one of my favorites. You don't have to go very far to have fun..you can snorkel at the front of the resort ..we saw many types of fishes. You can also go for nature walks..there is one organized walk up a mountain with one of the animation staff..it's a butt buster walk but not too long and you end up at a farm where locals offer sugar cane and coconut. It was lots of fun to do that. I mostly enjoyed this resorts set up..we had a room in number 3 ...we had a beautiful view of the ocean and usually you have to pay more at any other place to get ocean view...not here. I really enjoyed the massage guy, Juan Carlos, he did one back massage and one foot massage while I was there. Both very relaxing and exhilarating. The best of the best is the Spanish Coffees...wow!! Just loved those..Had to have one after meals for sure. Ruddy made them especially nice but all barmen are really well trained and good there. I just enjoyed it so much. The disco was also fun and for not much money you can rent a van to go to Havana..we did for 25 pesos each. In Havana we had langouste at a particular...which means a locals place not in a restaurant. This was really nice, good and cheap ...15 pesos a person. You ask anyone in Havana and they will guide you to a place...lots of people do that there even though they're not supposed to. So..if ever you go to Varadero...think of the Cameleon..it's quiet cause there are only two hotels on Jibacoa Beach.the Breezes and the Cameleon. You could choose to relax or have a blast..really it's all you want in a resort. The food was also o.k. they made great soups!! The a la carte was good but they served too much food...you have to tell them not to give you too much. I had the best fish ever there...grilled tuna.

My husband and I (age 34) wanted a quiet, relaxing resort without the spring break party crowd and this was it. Other reviews cover all the basics so I will only hit on a few points. First of all, TAKE A TRAVEL MUG FOR YOUR DRINKS. Mainly to reduce the huge number of small plastic cups that get thrown away each day. Other important reasons being you will make fewer trips to the bar because as mentioned the cups are so small. Your drink will keep colder longer on the beach and if you tip it over in the sand all is not lost.

We never had any problems with the air conditioner and even shut it off at night because it was too cold. We always had hot water for showers and the room was kept clean.

The pool bar has ham and cheese paninis (grilled sandwiches) and hot dogs available between 11am and 6pm. This was great because some days we didn't want to leave the beach to go to the buffet or we missed breakfast (7am to 9:30) and it was a long time to wait for lunch at the buffet (1 to 2:30pm).

Great snorkeling. No jelly fish when we were there. Safe for kids without fear of crashing waves knocking them over. We plan on taking our kids when they get a bit older.

We took clothes to leave there including things our kids have outgrown and happy meal toys that seem to clutter up our house. There were quite a few locals walking the beach from the public campground around the corner. We gave them some things and they were so appreciative. We were never approached by any local or harassed in anyway. There are lots of security guards on duty and they keep the resort guests from being pestered.

My husband and I, both in our mid-40s, stayed for 2 weeks (Feb 25-Mar 10, 2008) and very much enjoyed the property, staff and the overall experience.

The pool was great, the beach beautiful with lots of lounge chairs and shade if you wanted it and the snorkelling was simply amazing. Right in front of the palapas near the pool was the best spot. It was like being in an aquarium.

Our room was always kept very clean, as were the common areas of the resort.

The food was fine, nothing fancy but we always found something we liked, and the drinks were great. I don't know how I will be able to make it thriough the rest of the winter without my daily Chocolate Monkey fix. The coffee was great, and the Spanish coffees were works of art.

The bus tour to Havana is well worth the $51 each. Our guide Micheal was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Lunch, which was included, was at El Patio in Old Havana, served by tuxedoed waiters. Beautiful.

Our one complaint (other than the weather, which was unusually unsettled and very windy) was the ridiculously loud noise from the disco every night. We were in room 103 and really should have asked to move but figured we could tough it out with ear plugs. Be forewarned: that part of the resort is very loud until about 1:00 a.m.

Our air conditioner went on the fritz one day and was fixed in less than 10 minutes. You can change your money at the front desk, book tours in the lobby and arrange for taxis, etc.

We would definately return to this relaxed resort.

We stayed at the Cameleon for 2 weeks and my husband and I had a terrific time. We picked the Cameleon because it was smaller and less expensive.

We loved:

Snorkeling (I recommend bringing your own gear.)
The hikes- you could go on organized group hikes. They had an easy hike anyone could do as well as a more challenging walk up a short but steep hill that lead to a beautiful view of both resorts. Take your camera!
The daily activities- the entertainment staff really did well to help break up your day with all kinds of fun activities. All you had to do was participate. (But it was fun to just watch too!)
The coffee !!!!!!!! And I have never drank the stuff my whole life.
The Drinks weren't bad either.
The people- if you just opened up a little you could meet all kinds of people. Everyone were very friendly.
The Scooter tours- Awesome. A must.
The ice cream at lunch!!!
The OJ at breakfast!!!
The omelet lady!
The staff (Most of them anyway)
Jesus the gardener- we couldn't understand a word he say but still he talked with an honest and beautiful smile on his face.

We didn't like:

The food - Honestly we kinda liked the food a first. Some of the dishes were really good, but after 2 weeks I started looking around to see if I could buy my own Tabasco sauce or something. I mean I did read the other reviews....but I didn't listen. Next time. But still it's not that bad. (From the Husband: I have been a chef, and the food is good, but bland. No frozen or prepackaged food other than fries. And the good seasoned food, look closely, they are there! The salsa on freshly grilled fish- amazing!)
Still the food- somethings are not so fresh. Trust me. Avoid the mayo based dishes.
The A la Carte restaurant- I mean it was OK....the desserts were better there and at the buffet though.
The Wine- Red wine should not be served cold. Especially bad red wine.
The jelly fish sting- Better my husband that me that's all I can say, and peeing on it really works.
The rooms- It has to be said....they could have been cleaner. I hate to say it but next time I'm bringing my own cleaning supplies. We even tipped the maid everyday and still she never cleaned the dead ants by the sink. They were there when we arrived and were still there when we left 14 days later. They are most likely still there. If anyone stays in room 9 say hello to them.

But don't let the dislikes dissuade you from staying here if you are interested. Even with all our dislikes (my husband was oblivious to the ants by the way) we loved our stay and are planning to return next year. Just keep and open mind and go with it.
