We stayed at the Cameleon for 2 weeks and my husband and I had a terrific time. We picked the Cameleon because it was smaller and less expensive.

We loved:

Snorkeling (I recommend bringing your own gear.)
The hikes- you could go on organized group hikes. They had an easy hike anyone could do as well as a more challenging walk up a short but steep hill that lead to a beautiful view of both resorts. Take your camera!
The daily activities- the entertainment staff really did well to help break up your day with all kinds of fun activities. All you had to do was participate. (But it was fun to just watch too!)
The coffee !!!!!!!! And I have never drank the stuff my whole life.
The Drinks weren't bad either.
The people- if you just opened up a little you could meet all kinds of people. Everyone were very friendly.
The Scooter tours- Awesome. A must.
The ice cream at lunch!!!
The OJ at breakfast!!!
The omelet lady!
The staff (Most of them anyway)
Jesus the gardener- we couldn't understand a word he say but still he talked with an honest and beautiful smile on his face.

We didn't like:

The food - Honestly we kinda liked the food a first. Some of the dishes were really good, but after 2 weeks I started looking around to see if I could buy my own Tabasco sauce or something. I mean I did read the other reviews....but I didn't listen. Next time. But still it's not that bad. (From the Husband: I have been a chef, and the food is good, but bland. No frozen or prepackaged food other than fries. And the good seasoned food, look closely, they are there! The salsa on freshly grilled fish- amazing!)
Still the food- somethings are not so fresh. Trust me. Avoid the mayo based dishes.
The A la Carte restaurant- I mean it was OK....the desserts were better there and at the buffet though.
The Wine- Red wine should not be served cold. Especially bad red wine.
The jelly fish sting- Better my husband that me that's all I can say, and peeing on it really works.
The rooms- It has to be said....they could have been cleaner. I hate to say it but next time I'm bringing my own cleaning supplies. We even tipped the maid everyday and still she never cleaned the dead ants by the sink. They were there when we arrived and were still there when we left 14 days later. They are most likely still there. If anyone stays in room 9 say hello to them.

But don't let the dislikes dissuade you from staying here if you are interested. Even with all our dislikes (my husband was oblivious to the ants by the way) we loved our stay and are planning to return next year. Just keep and open mind and go with it.

Hello, my name is Ashley....i'm 21 years old. I wanted a vacation for reading week, but something more relaxing and quiet so my boyfriend and i decided to go here.My boyfriend and his family had already been here so it was good he knew some things before we went. It was a great place and for the most part good weather! We did have a red flag though 4 out of the 7 days we went, which meant we cant go into the ocean. Most of the time it was cause it was too windy, which meant too many jellyfish.

The Resort:

Rooms: The rooms were pretty good, they were really cute villas, own patio and everything. the housekeepers kept it so clean everyday and made things with our towels everyday also. The hairdryer is not good though took me almost an hour to dry my hair there...so i usually didnt.haha. They have a safe in the room which was good to put all personal belongings in there. it cost us 2 pasos a day. They have at v there which isn't too bad for thw down times, but mostly have spanish channels.

Food: Since it was all inclusive we got fed three meals a day plus snacks between 11-6. Although their snacks were only two things everyday, which was a bolgona sandwich or a hotdog. They have two bars, one at the pool and one by the lobby, great bartenders! As for the food itself breakfest was alright, didnt usually eat much then, lunch and dinner were also okay. Some things we ate were: rice/beans,chicken, pork, pasta, seafood, fruit, salads, pizza, etc. it was not bad but repeditive.

Beach/pool: These were probably the best part ofthe trip, the pools are very ncie and close to the bar. the beach is also close to the rooms and very beautiful. Theirs almost always chairs to lounge on at the pool at the beach area.

Activities: This resort is very well known for their snorkeling, which i found by far the greatest part of my vacation. You can snorkel right off the shore, saw very many types of fish, jelly fish, sting rays, etc. Around the resort they have the basic activities such as: spanish lessons, dance lessons, bike rides, hiking and more. They also had some night life to the resort which was shows everynight at 930. After the shows they would have a disco each night, we onlywent to a few of the shows, they put good entertainment on, exp. their music. The excurisions they have were quite abit and very itneresting. We went on two, the Havana day tour, which was 51 pasos, and then the rio canimar tour which was 53 pasos each. I recommend both. exp. if your into the history of havana and snorkeling.

Suggestions:
-If you go to Havana, be careful of who you take a picture of because some people their dress up very cool looking to try and get people to take pictures so they can ask for pasos. If you do and walk away, they will follow you a great deal. They also have people their who ask if you want cigars, don't buy them their fake. Make sure you buy them from an actual cigar place where the tour guide will most likely take you. Also, for the markets, try to bargin with them, youll find alot of them hav ethe same type of thing, some huts will be cheaper then others so make sure you walk around asking how much. They will also try to wheel you in if you are looking so just make sure you say no thank you and stand your ground.
-Make sure if you havent been snorkeling before, you try it. i was scared at first to go into the water but i bought water shoes and swam with them the hole time, was alot more comfortable.
-Bring little gifts for people at the resort or if you go on an excursion to hand out to little kids and such. At the resort we would bring little gifts to dinners, for the housekeepers, sercurity guards, bartenders. We brought: shamppoo, toys for kids, tooth paste and brushes, tshirts.

Overall it was an amazing experience, i deffiantly recommend this to anyone who wants a relaxing, but fun trip. Either for couples, families or older people.

Please feel free to contact me with any other questions about costs, experiences and what i suggest.

-Ash

We were looking for peace and quiet and we found it! There are lots of activities if you want (I'm a joiner - so there was water polo, beach volleyball, salsa lessons, acquafit) or peace if you'd rather (also read 5 books in 6 days). The staff are wonderful - especially the entertainment boys.

Yes, the main beach is best for snorkelling, but if you walk 50m west around the point, you are at a spectacular public beach that has great swimming! And usually empty.

Everything was very clean and there are flowers everywhere! Grounds crews even gave us flowers on St. Valentine's Day.

Since this was my first all inclusive experience I thought there was a good variety on the food front - although it is all quite bland - it is very fresh.

One warning - chocolate monkeys are addictive! The best advice I've seen is to take thermal mugs. Your monkey stays frozen for ages!

P.S. I had an ear infection and had to see the doctor - he's really sexy!

  • Liked — Loved the sense of seclusion the cabanas give.
  • Disliked — Food was a bland - but I've been told that is just Cuba!

My husband and I and two children (6 and 18 months) stayed at Cameleon Villas Jibacoa in January of 2008. We were very pleased with the resort overall. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and the resort was well cleaned and maintained.
This review will be somewhat brief, relying on the other accurate reviews here I have read. My perspective will be from a mother travelling with her young family.
We loved everything about this place for kids. There is no kids club, and that was fine with us. If you are looking for a resort for some relaxing family time, this is it.
The pool was terrific. Our 6 year old swam for hours every day in the shallower pool with no worries (two large twin pools, impeccably kept - one a meter deep and the other went from shallow to deep). There were always plenty of pool chairs, tables and shade. Our toddler kept busy in the wading area and playing with other children. The ocean was lovely, warmer than the pool actually. Lots of shells. It was very calm a few days which was great for the little ones. However, on the rougher days, the jellyfish were plentiful so we avoided the beach those days. The snorkelling was great. Lots to see even in shallow water.
The meals were good. Great fruit, ice cream, soups, great rolls, always good meat and the fish was excellent. Bring a bottle of ketchup if your kids love it. The ketchup they had wasn't plentiful, and wasn't the same as we are used to. They had one high chair for the whole dining room, so if your kids require one, I suggest bringing a booster with you. We had an ongoing joke with the other young families as to who would get to the dining room first. The dining hours were my only complaint. Breakfast was fine, from 7:30 to 9 am. Lunch started at 1pm and dinner at 7pm. This would be perfectly fine for anyone with older kids or adults. Everyone there with little ones had the same complaint. There is no food available anywhere else but the dining room between those hours (except a hot dog or sandwich at the pool bar in the afternoon). Lunch and dinner were both about 2 hours too late for little ones. Most kids were fit to be tied or falling asleep in their soup. Many just had to "picnic" in their room because it was just too late for those used to earlier lunches and dinners. Luckily, the fridge in the room was handy and I brought a bottle warmer to warm up things I brought from home for our youngest.
The milk is powdered there. The water is fine everywhere, even right from the tap in your room. Even my toddler drank it everywhere and none of us had any problems. The drinks were great. My girl loved the virgin "chocolate monkeys", Pina coladas etc. The Spanish coffees were great, as were all tropical type drinks. The bartenders were very good, often working for 16-18 hour shifts at a time.
The room was very good (after we moved). Our original room was in a block behind the disco. Not good for light sleepers of any age. Unfortunately, this is where the "family" type rooms are. We were all beat from travelling our first day there and just falling asleep when the disco began at 9 and ended about 1 am and IT WAS LOUD!!!! I spoke to the Nolitours rep the next day and insisted that we be moved that day. At first, I was met with resistance. Had the Nolitours rep not been involved, I don't think we would have been moved. As a bit of advice, when you check in, see where the room is on their map. If you think that loud music will be a problem, try to move right away and save yourself the restless night. The room they moved us to was #29 facing the dining room, which was quiet and central and great. No complaints after that. The a/c worked well, lots of hot water and very quiet. They also delivered us a full size crib, which was great, complete with pillows etc. One thing I would suggest to everyone, is to bring a can of Raid for ants. We Canadians have mosquitos, Cuba has ants it seems and they just travel in under the door. I am sure a good spray of Raid along the baseboards and threshold would keep them out, or at least at bay. Most adults were not bothered by mosquitos or ant bites, but I did see some bites on the babies and kids. I guess they are more delicious.
The massage therapist on sight is dynamite. He is extremely well qualified and gives a fantastic massage. A 30 plus minute back massage was 10 pesos.
Overall, we will go back for sure. The atmosphere and charm of the place is really remarkable. The grounds are spread out over many acres with beautiful beach (even nicer than the Breezes I think). The staff are professional, very very helpful and friendly. The scenery of rural Cuba is amazing. Well worth the short drive from the Veradero airport.

  • Liked — The friendly staff and the small, low key relaxed ambiance of the whole resort.
  • Disliked — The meal times were way too late for young children.

We are from Niagara Falls in our fifties and this is our fourth trip to Cuba
Rooms and Grounds
The resort is relatively small right next to the Breezes Resort. The villas (four units per villa) are unique as the ceilings are rounded with rounded awnings at the front. The rooms are very neat and tidy and kept very clean. Our room had a new washroom with a huge shower, lots of hot water and both 110 (our outlets) and 220 electrical service. We arrived late Friday night and there were sandwiches and fruit in the refrigerator as well as a large bottled water. TV reception was good with CTV Global and CNN so we could hear about all the storms back home. The grounds are very well maintained. It is a nice location with a hill right behind the resort.
Beach and Pool
There are two large basic pools side by side facing the ocean with lots of chairs. The pools were always kept very clean. A little chilly when you first get in but very refreshing. There is usually a nice breeze so that it is not stifling hot. There was a long beach with nice white sand but lots of jellyfish when it is windy that can sting if you are not careful. We do not snorkel, but everyone says the snorkelling is great with coral very close to the shore.
Meals
We found the meals to be above average. Breakfast is always our favourite meal with fresh omlettes. There is just one buffet restaurant and one a la carte. Mita, the hostess is such a wonderful and friendly lady. We brought her lots of things from Canada and she said "you will always be in my heart". When we pulled away in the bus to leave, my wife was practically in tears. We found all of the staff to be very friendly. You really get to know the staff in a small resort. There are cats and two small dogs (the little black one is adorable) usually near the entrance to the restaurant. There is always a small cat up on the roof trying to get your attention to throw him up some food (which we usually did)
Entertainment. - average with local entertainers
Side Trips
The resort is halfway between Varadero and Havana. We have been to both places before and did not go this time. There is a mountain walk where you get an impressive view of the ocean and Breezes. You go by several local homes and they will let you see inside their homes. There is a nature walk where you see a farm with lots of animals and they have a machine that crushes sugar cane into juice which you can drink. At the end they have a dog that does tricks. We went on lots of walks outside of the resort. There are lots of animals along the side of the road. There are four campgrounds (Campismo) down the road to the west where the local Cubans come for vacation. Some are really nice and others run down. We brought one whole suitcase of things to give away - Tshirts, hats, soap, tooth paste, kids clothes and shoes, stuffed toys, jewelery etc. They need everything. The locals are so friendly.
