My husband and I and two children (6 and 18 months) stayed at Cameleon Villas Jibacoa in January of 2008. We were very pleased with the resort overall. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and the resort was well cleaned and maintained.
This review will be somewhat brief, relying on the other accurate reviews here I have read. My perspective will be from a mother travelling with her young family.
We loved everything about this place for kids. There is no kids club, and that was fine with us. If you are looking for a resort for some relaxing family time, this is it.
The pool was terrific. Our 6 year old swam for hours every day in the shallower pool with no worries (two large twin pools, impeccably kept - one a meter deep and the other went from shallow to deep). There were always plenty of pool chairs, tables and shade. Our toddler kept busy in the wading area and playing with other children. The ocean was lovely, warmer than the pool actually. Lots of shells. It was very calm a few days which was great for the little ones. However, on the rougher days, the jellyfish were plentiful so we avoided the beach those days. The snorkelling was great. Lots to see even in shallow water.
The meals were good. Great fruit, ice cream, soups, great rolls, always good meat and the fish was excellent. Bring a bottle of ketchup if your kids love it. The ketchup they had wasn't plentiful, and wasn't the same as we are used to. They had one high chair for the whole dining room, so if your kids require one, I suggest bringing a booster with you. We had an ongoing joke with the other young families as to who would get to the dining room first. The dining hours were my only complaint. Breakfast was fine, from 7:30 to 9 am. Lunch started at 1pm and dinner at 7pm. This would be perfectly fine for anyone with older kids or adults. Everyone there with little ones had the same complaint. There is no food available anywhere else but the dining room between those hours (except a hot dog or sandwich at the pool bar in the afternoon). Lunch and dinner were both about 2 hours too late for little ones. Most kids were fit to be tied or falling asleep in their soup. Many just had to "picnic" in their room because it was just too late for those used to earlier lunches and dinners. Luckily, the fridge in the room was handy and I brought a bottle warmer to warm up things I brought from home for our youngest.
The milk is powdered there. The water is fine everywhere, even right from the tap in your room. Even my toddler drank it everywhere and none of us had any problems. The drinks were great. My girl loved the virgin "chocolate monkeys", Pina coladas etc. The Spanish coffees were great, as were all tropical type drinks. The bartenders were very good, often working for 16-18 hour shifts at a time.
The room was very good (after we moved). Our original room was in a block behind the disco. Not good for light sleepers of any age. Unfortunately, this is where the "family" type rooms are. We were all beat from travelling our first day there and just falling asleep when the disco began at 9 and ended about 1 am and IT WAS LOUD!!!! I spoke to the Nolitours rep the next day and insisted that we be moved that day. At first, I was met with resistance. Had the Nolitours rep not been involved, I don't think we would have been moved. As a bit of advice, when you check in, see where the room is on their map. If you think that loud music will be a problem, try to move right away and save yourself the restless night. The room they moved us to was #29 facing the dining room, which was quiet and central and great. No complaints after that. The a/c worked well, lots of hot water and very quiet. They also delivered us a full size crib, which was great, complete with pillows etc. One thing I would suggest to everyone, is to bring a can of Raid for ants. We Canadians have mosquitos, Cuba has ants it seems and they just travel in under the door. I am sure a good spray of Raid along the baseboards and threshold would keep them out, or at least at bay. Most adults were not bothered by mosquitos or ant bites, but I did see some bites on the babies and kids. I guess they are more delicious.
The massage therapist on sight is dynamite. He is extremely well qualified and gives a fantastic massage. A 30 plus minute back massage was 10 pesos.
Overall, we will go back for sure. The atmosphere and charm of the place is really remarkable. The grounds are spread out over many acres with beautiful beach (even nicer than the Breezes I think). The staff are professional, very very helpful and friendly. The scenery of rural Cuba is amazing. Well worth the short drive from the Veradero airport.

  • Liked — The friendly staff and the small, low key relaxed ambiance of the whole resort.
  • Disliked — The meal times were way too late for young children.

We are from Niagara Falls in our fifties and this is our fourth trip to Cuba
Rooms and Grounds
The resort is relatively small right next to the Breezes Resort. The villas (four units per villa) are unique as the ceilings are rounded with rounded awnings at the front. The rooms are very neat and tidy and kept very clean. Our room had a new washroom with a huge shower, lots of hot water and both 110 (our outlets) and 220 electrical service. We arrived late Friday night and there were sandwiches and fruit in the refrigerator as well as a large bottled water. TV reception was good with CTV Global and CNN so we could hear about all the storms back home. The grounds are very well maintained. It is a nice location with a hill right behind the resort.
Beach and Pool
There are two large basic pools side by side facing the ocean with lots of chairs. The pools were always kept very clean. A little chilly when you first get in but very refreshing. There is usually a nice breeze so that it is not stifling hot. There was a long beach with nice white sand but lots of jellyfish when it is windy that can sting if you are not careful. We do not snorkel, but everyone says the snorkelling is great with coral very close to the shore.
Meals
We found the meals to be above average. Breakfast is always our favourite meal with fresh omlettes. There is just one buffet restaurant and one a la carte. Mita, the hostess is such a wonderful and friendly lady. We brought her lots of things from Canada and she said "you will always be in my heart". When we pulled away in the bus to leave, my wife was practically in tears. We found all of the staff to be very friendly. You really get to know the staff in a small resort. There are cats and two small dogs (the little black one is adorable) usually near the entrance to the restaurant. There is always a small cat up on the roof trying to get your attention to throw him up some food (which we usually did)
Entertainment. - average with local entertainers
Side Trips
The resort is halfway between Varadero and Havana. We have been to both places before and did not go this time. There is a mountain walk where you get an impressive view of the ocean and Breezes. You go by several local homes and they will let you see inside their homes. There is a nature walk where you see a farm with lots of animals and they have a machine that crushes sugar cane into juice which you can drink. At the end they have a dog that does tricks. We went on lots of walks outside of the resort. There are lots of animals along the side of the road. There are four campgrounds (Campismo) down the road to the west where the local Cubans come for vacation. Some are really nice and others run down. We brought one whole suitcase of things to give away - Tshirts, hats, soap, tooth paste, kids clothes and shoes, stuffed toys, jewelery etc. They need everything. The locals are so friendly.

My husband and I went to Cameleon Villas Jibacoa from January 21st-28th. Unfortunately our room contained 2 twin beds instead of the Queen we requested. We pushed the beds together and made it work. Another couple we met there changed rooms with no problems. It was a nice clean resort. Staff very friendly. Food is ok. Nothing fancy. No one I knew got sick! Drinks are fantastic. The bar tenders really take the time to create drinks that are more of an artwork than a drink. Many liked the Spanish coffees. I preferred the Chocolate monkey's and Pina Coladas. The sea banana you must try as well. Ruddy was the best bar tender of all! Lots of cats and a few dogs hang out at the resort near the buffet restaurant. They are very sweet animals. If you are an animal lover, please bring either flea collars or flea drops for the animals. I brought gravy basted milk bones, but the dogs didn't care for them. Next time I'll bring plain old milk bones! The staff love coffee travel mugs and they will ask you for them. If you have extras, bring them as gifts. The resort grounds are always kept nice. The beach is raked & cleaned daily. There is always enough beach chairs for everyone so you don't have to wake up at 6am to reserve your chair! The snorkeling is great. Not alot of sandy bottom to swim in. Ocean has some sandy areas that are nice for swimming, but alot of grass & coral which makes for great snorkeling. Costco snorkeling gear works great and is better than using the resort gear. Water socks are good to have there. The entertainment crew does a great job. They put on nightly shows and also have some activities to participate in during the day. Beach volleyball was fun. This was a really nice, quiet, laid back resort. Only 110 rooms I believe. Great for couples, people 40+ and also families with small children. Not the best place if you are looking for alot of action and partying. Location was good. About 1/2 way between Varadero & Havana. We did 2 tours. Varadero day tour for $25 and the Havana/Tropicana tour for $101. Both worth it and good value. Outside the resort bring tissue or money for TP! Most washrooms have an "attendant" that offers you toilet paper (for tips) The stalls rarely have TP inside. Overall it was a great vacation. Met alot of great people and had alot of fun. I would go back, but there are so many other places I'd like to see first.

Cameleon Jibacoa

First the negative. One night there was small ants in some of the deserts they served for supper. Also the same night I got a piece of wire in the cubed beef. The buffet is very limited, smallest I've seen in Cuba in over 20 years, but there was always something to eat, so don't let that put you off. Deserts ran out quickly as did glasses at the lobby bar. Well I was there, the fins and masks were in short supply for guests, but more where on order. At night some of the sidwalks are not well lit in some areas, and there are broken spots. If you were an older person, you'd need to be careful.

The positive. Staff were great, all very warm and friendly, room cleaners did a great job. Lobby staff would do what they could to help. I'd recommend the lobby bar when Ruddy and Daniel where on duty. They both took such pride in their mixed drinks. Ask for a spanish coffee or a chocolate monkey from either of them and your in for a treat just watching them make it. Rooms have 220 and 110 volts, hair dryers, showers only with a safety box in room for 2 CUC per day extra. The lobby staff will exchange money during the day, so there is no real need to do so at the airport.

The resort is spread out on a good size property so it never felt crowded, and there were always beach and pool chairs available. Its not a great beach for swimming because of the coral in close but its absolutely wonderful for snorkelling with different coral formations and lots of colourful fish. You may want to consider bringing beach shoes to protect your feet if your going for a swim. Unfortunately your at the mercy of the ocean and the winds, so I only got snorkelling 1½ days out of a weeks stay. Bring an underwater camera if you come. The resort guests seem to averaged around 50 to 55 years and it's the warmest group of people I've ever met anywhere. Its not a party resort, most people are there to relax or snorkel. If you snorkel straight out from the pool area, you'll find a large grotto filled with larger fish. Bottom line, I'd go back for the warm people and amazing snorkelling. Cuban people are always so warm and friendly.

My husband and I went to Cuba on March 31/07 for 1 week for the first time.
Little bungallow they put us in was very nice. Spaces, 2 single beds, TV, little fridge and for 10 pasos a safe. Table and 2 chairs on the littele patio outside was godsent. Ocean and sand, no concrete jungle there. Everybody nice, polite, helpfull, and no americans. Small resort, most guests middle aged like us. All the suvenirs we bought from Danny were skillfully crafted. Trips to Havana were nice.
I am not just saying all thet, we are going again this April.
If you want to rest, swim, snorkell, and have a really nice time, go to this small inexpensive resort. You will not regret it.
