What a great trip my wife and I just had at the SuperClub Breezes Jibacoa.

We arrived on March 16th from Ottawa for one week at this resort. It was very clean and got great service from the maid Elizabeth. Our room was facing the pool area but contrary to some critics, it was very quiet with no late noise to keep us up at night.

Food was better than we had anticipated based again on some critics. We tried both the Cuban and Italian restaurants where we received some excellent services (friendly and efficient staff). Although we had bought our own pepper and salt, they had some at the tables during the meals in case you needed to spice it up which was rarely the case.

We took a one-day excursion to Havana (Jibacoa is best place if you want to visit Havana yet have a beach resort to relax for the rest of your trip). The trip was booked through the Sunwing representative at the resort (very helpful) and we felt it was good value for what we paid for. Unfortunately our guide (Yuri) was a bit tired and was not the most enthousiastic on that day. We visited some key spots in Havana, had two meals included, got to change at a four-star hotel before seeing the Tropicana show (very spectacular - must see).

Bringing crayons, pens, erasers, soap, tooth paste, chewing gum, etc.. that we gave to the museum guides paid out especially if you want access to the "restricted" area at the "Capitaines" Museum. It was a very funny experience that illustrate how the locals are in dire need of these products. Our maid was also very thankful for those daily little gifts that we had brought with us.

Eating at the Beach Grill for lunch was highly recommended as food was very good, light and with a great view facing the sea. Roberto one of the servers was very nice to his clients with a great smile everytime we saw him. Key for us was not seeing any bugs outside and in our room during the whole trip.

Entertainment at nights was OK with good participation from those staying at the resort. One lady who had been at this resort 8 times during the past 3 years commented on why she came back to Jibacoa. She replied that it was because of the people that she came back. It is true that the staff are very friendly and especially very efficient in their work including the bartenders that gave us strong drinks no matter the bar and time of the day.

We were especially blessed by great guests that we met during that week (lots of Canadians come to this place at that time of year). I would like to mentionned some of these that made our trip even more enjoyable. Sorry for the spelling of names as I am terrible for remembering names...

Mark, Margie, Peter and Kathy Gallivan from Ottawa; Christian and Kathrina from Germany; Janine and Christopher from Vancouver who lended me his mask to see the many colorful fishes at sea; Meg and the rest of the wedding crew from Nova Scotia who played volleyball with us; Other beach volleyball players, Jason, Marc (de Paris), Jean and his wife from Gatineau, etc...

In summary, a great trip we had - we highly recommend Jibacoa as a great resort to relax and to see Havana for a day or two. Do remember to bring in your large plastic mugs to save a few trips to the bars...

André from Ottawa

Breezes Jibacoa is a little bit of paradise. I would really have to try very hard to find something negative to say about this place. The food is good, the staff are excellant and the drinks are abundant. My only complaints concern my fellow travellers, most notably those from my home country. I could mention many terrible scenes I witnessed at the buffet, ( I can't imagine what these poor people that work there must think when they see someone load their plate up, only to see most of the food left behind, to be thrown away), however where we really make our preasance known is at the bar. A few years ago we started taking our travel mugs with us on our trips to Cuba. These items are useful in many ways; They keep your drink cold, they keep sand out of your drink at the beach, and they cut down on plastic cups being tossed in the trash. The problem is that some people have taken the travel mug to another level. They have started to bring something called a "Bubba" with them. These "mugs" are the size of a beer keg and should be banned. Not surprisingly the guys with the biggest mugs also have the biggest mouths, and their mouths seem to get larger as the day goes longer. Come on Canada lets shape up. Our reputation for bad behavior is growing as fast as our waist lines, and thats nothing to be proud of.

We visited this resort back in September but, months later and the realisation that this utopian paradise will require a re-visit very soon, has prompted this review at this moment in time.
First of all, but on the downside, to use Cubana Airways, is merely a method of getting from the UK to Cuba and back again – period! To pretend that the customer service was anymore than can be expected on a number 12 bus ride from Peckham Rye to Oxford Circus is sheer fantasy. It was the cheapest way to go and you generally only get what you pay for, however, the bit in between was indeed, heaven on earth.

From day one (we arrived in the dark) when we opened the curtains in our room on the first morning, we realised we had hit the jackpot! The lush green grassy area outside our balcony, dotted with palm trees, wasn’t enough to hide the view of the sandy beach and the blue Caribbean beyond.

The room was always very clean and we always left little prezzies for the room maids for their efforts. Always take soaps, toothpaste, pens and writing pads etc. to give out to the staff as they really appreciate these simple gifts.

The complex itself is well laid out and you’re never too far from anything. The staff are always very helpful and many of the restaurant staff soon get to know your individual wants and routines. Despite the resort being quite quiet when we there, the entertainment staff are enthusiastic about everything they do even though some events may not be well attended.

The main restaurant food was good and generally basic but there was always a very good selection covering all tastes. The two on-site restaurants were excellent with the Italian having the edge over the Cuban one. The Cubans are not exactly renowned for their culinary place in the world rankings so if you want haute cuisine or Michelin 3 star then go somewhere else and stop whinging.
The scooter rides are really good value and there are some very interesting tours. Some of the scooters are a bit iffy and you have to watch out for the pot holes in the roads but we came back with all our limbs intact. We did actually run out of gas on one occasion but the head poncho produced a lemonade bottle full of fuel from under his seat and we were soon on our way again!

A trip to Havana is a must. We went on an organised trip although I would fancy going under my own steam and doing my own thing next time. Be mindful of the poverty you see and the way the Cubans live and think on the privileged way in which you lead your own life, wherever you come from.

For the cost of the holiday, to travel nearly half way round the world to an all-inclusive Caribbean resort it was fantastic value for money. I’m not a big fan of going back to the same place again, with so much of the world to see, but we’ve just booked again for July this year!
Go and enjoy!!

We arrived on the 17th of Marsh, weather was was very nice 28 dgrs.We took a couple of tours one to Old Havana (day tour),that one I could of done without ,we felt rushed did not get to spend time looking around .aperently if you take the Full tour it's worth it .and one to Matanzas Yumuri, Our guides name was Fidel and he was fantastic I would recomend this tour to everyone and anyone.I was blown away by the beauty of the Vally and the cave you can not go to Cuba and not expirience Matanzas Yumuri I am still in awe.the locals were polite and never did we get harassed for pesos there. In Old Havana if our guide stopped to show us something we would imidietly be surrounded by locals expecting pesos,If you use the washrooms in the museums or any other place there you have to pay a peso for toilette paper ,a girl just stands there with a roll in her hands and gives you a few squares .so bring your own.The resort was Very Clean ,Food was ok ,beautiful pool, evening shows are ok,rooms very clean,Thank you Elizabeth (our Maid). You have to go for the hike up the mountain our guide was Michel ,very funny guy(cute too)

+ Buffet :-) The buffet was fabulous, stupendous…but, anything with chocolate is ghastly!
- Tipping: Definitely expected, everywhere. For the chambermaids, table waiters, bar, excursion leaders, bus drivers, tour guides…everywhere! They do not want gifts, they want CUC pesos.
+ Beach: Beautiful, fish within wading distance from water’s edge.
- Rooms: Somewhat dated, but clean.
+ Grounds: Beautiful, well maintained.
- Activities: The daily (free) hikes are great, but be prepared to be taken to “Farms” (i.e. petting zoos for tourists) where the locals want CUC convertible pesos.
+ Mug: Take large insulated mug. It sounds silly, but is a very good idea.
- Milk/Chocolate: They only have powdered milk, so any dessert with milk base is ghastly. Take non-dairy creamer for coffee, and Splenda if you want non-sugar sweetener.
- Check-in: I had to request 2nd level room, he said he had “no record” of the request. I finally got a 2nd level (a ploy for a tip?). The hotel was only ¾ full.
