My husband and I (ages 29/31) spent Jan 1-8 and couldn’t have asked for a better time. This resort was everything we had expected and hoped for. It is about an hour bus ride from the Varadero airport. There is not much near the resort. I would recommend this resort for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and have a relaxing vacation. It is not for those who want a big party, it is more laid back.
Beach
The beach was really big, but it was rocky in areas. They seemed to only rake closer to the beach bar. Lots of sand crabs too, but never got bit or stepped on one, they are fast to get out of your way. The snorkeling was close to the best we have ever seen and we have snorkeled in many different countries, this is up there with Maui. Many different colored fish, you can see fish in knee deep water. The reef is quite big, with many area’s to explore. The area we found to be the best is at the far end of the beach, you have to swim over some sea grass and then it opens up to a large enclosed circular area and the fish just wait at the edge hoping you have food. They follow you as you swim, most we enjoyed having near us except some larger light black/dark grey ones were rather aggressive. I think they are used to getting fed because they just wouldn’t leave us alone, one chomped on my finger, but it scared me more than it hurt me. We were not bothered by anyone on the beach and there were no vendors trying to sell you stuff.
Rooms
The room was great, we had an ocean front room, had a king bed and a fridge. The fridge was restocked only if you filled out the paper saying what you needed, and even then the limit was 2 bottles of water a day, also four pop and some juice. However, the resort water is purified and ok to drink out of the tap, which we did the whole time and never got sick. The room was very clean and almost daily we were left towel swans. I wouldn’t suggest a pool view room unless you are there to party and don’t mind the noise. There is an outdoor stage that is very loud until around 11pm and the disco is near all those pool rooms too.
Food
Between 5-7 p.m. the buffet is closed, but I seen food sitting outside during that time in heated containers. Also at 10:30 pm they put snacks out. We really didn’t care for the food, it wasn’t that it was bad, it was just so bland. There are two a la carte restaurants and the Italian one was an exception to the rest of the food, that whole experience was amazing. Food excellent, atmosphere was great, had a piano player while we ate, and wonderful service. In my opinion the Cuban one wasn’t so good, I heard many other guests mention that too. The buffet had plenty to choose from, but often the same items.
Bars
There are plenty of drinks to choose from, there is even a drink menu. The piano bar upstairs is air conditioned and seems to be the happening place. The main bar is also good, it’s in the lobby. There is also a pool bar but didn’t spend much time there. The beach bar is where we were most, they have great pizza and burgers there.
Pool/Hot tub
The pool was ok,but very shallow at one end, and volley ball net at the other. I heard a few people mention some sharp tiles and seen one guy hopping along with a cut foot. There is a hot tub, fits maybe four people and is rather cool. When the jets are on you can feel streams of cold water coming out.
Activities
You get funny money when you participate in the resort activities. Only on Thursdays they have an auction and you can buy rum and stuff with the funny money. There is activities going on at the pool and beach daily, but nothing else near the resort. There is a daily hike and bike ride at 9am. They both each take about 1.5 hours. The hike is straight up the mountain side then you stop with a breathtaking view of the resort, then carry on to the local farm. The bike ride takes you along the beach road and up to a cave and watering hole. There is also your typical all inclusive resort activities such as dance lessons, Spanish lesson, volleyball, horse shoes ect.
Tipping
Tipping is not required and this is the first resort that we have been to that this is actually the case. We never seen any tip jars around and no one acted like they expected it or asked for money. We did tip anyways at some of the bars and when we went to the a la carte dinners. We also brought stuff like razors, lotions, toys for kids because those things cost them a lot of money. The average person only makes 25 CUC a month which is about $30 Canadian. I found what they appreciated most was gum, jeans and stuffed animals for the kids. If you want to bring gifts for the people, the people on the farm where the hike is really seemed to love what I gave them, and there are kids along the way on the bike ride too. I gave a stuffed bear to a girl along the bike ride and she was so happy to have it and gave me a kiss.
