I visited Breezes with my husband from Sept 14th for 2 weeks upon recommendation from a colleague and it certainly lived up to expectation!
The reception staff weren't overly enthusiastic upon arrival (but I was exepcting that after reading these reviews) and despite asking for a first floor room (just in case the spider stories were true - they weren't but we did get a huge crab trying to get into our room!) we were told there were none available. When we asked the next day, we were told it was full depsite it being obvious only around half of the resort was occupied. BUT, the room we had was fine - clean, airy, huge bed and good air-con. Incidentally, we were asked to move rooms (to a much nicer first floor room with a pool view) a few days later due to problems with air con in our block! So, we were more than happy with that.
On the whole, the staff were friendly. The food was OK in the buffet but often not very hot unless cooked to order. Still very nice though. The A La Carte restaurants were very nice though (and I think this was a one off) on our second visit to the Cuban place, the service was appaling and we were served by a waitress who didn't seem to know what she was doing - we weren't offered drinks for about 15 minutes and when our meals arrived, they were shoved in front of us, no smiles...but the Italian was fantastic. We gave the two waiters in there a big tip before we left. The service had been excellent (as had the wine and food!).
Cocktails on tap all the time was brilliant. The Thermos cups came very much in handy - kept our drinks cold on the beach for ages) We spent most evenings in the piano bar (avoiding the live entertainment which was cheesy even by Butlins' standards, but OK if you like that kind of thing!). We met lots of nice couples, mainly from the UK and hit it off with Nathan and Claire from Nottingham who we've kept in touch with. Memories of star gazing on the beach from the sunbeds, very late nights drinking and rading the hot snacks bar and a 3am jacuzzi dip! Excellent!
We did a scooter tour which was great fun - definitely worth it! And the dolphin catamaran tour was brill - free bar, a visit to a gorgeous white sandy beach and swimming with dolphins! We also did the Havana Special Tour which was just for the day but included the Tropicana show - a MUST! That was proper entertainment - top class artists in an open air theatre with free rum! Brilliant.
Great beach and the warmest sea I've swam in. Weather was great too - only rained once. Sunny the rest of the time (humid at night but you get used to it!).
Some of this might sound negative but I do have high expectations after doing lots of travelling...on the whole, we had a very enjoyable and relaxing time. I would highly recommend it. Cuba is unlike anywhere else I've seen - very lush - and is definitely worth a visit for something a bit different. Very reasonably priced for the standard of service, accommodation and facilities.
