Excellent Peaceful and Relaxing Hotel in a Beautiful setting

My husband and I have just returned from 10 nights at Breezes Jibacoa. Firstly thankfully we travelled with Virgin! – If you are flying from the UK, and want to get to the Cuba in 8-10 hours rather than 30 – do not fly Cubana, as I heard lots of terrible stories about them.

Rather than repeating what others have said, I would just like to say that for what you pay to stay in this hotel, it is well worth the money. If you want a five star hotel you should pay double the money. This hotel I would rate as a very good four star hotel, the location is very pretty and remote, food was excellent and there was plenty of choice, with some vegetarian options. Rooms were not luxurious, but comfortable and facilities and services very good. Lots to do at no cost, with paid trips available if you wish. The weather (24th November – 5th December) was sunny and hot most days, with no rain at all.

Just a few points

•Take a thermal cup for drinks, they are about £3 from a camping/hardware shop (if you don't you will regret it, as the cups are very small and plastic)
•Take a mat to put on top of the sun beds, as when sun-bathing on your front, the beds are very uncomfortable. (towels are free)
•Book the Cuban and Italian restaurants when you arrive. We had no trouble getting in to the Italian twice in ten days, and out of choice did not want to eat in the Cuban Restaurant, but they do get busy, if the resort is full.
•Do not pay extra for a poolside room, as they can be noisy, we were in a garden room 1146 and it was very quite and pretty and close to both the beach and all the facilities. Beds are medium hard and very comfy.
•Take some mosquito repellent (although for someone who normally gets bitten, I only got a few bites)
•Be careful in the sea when it’s rough; as the sea can wash in jelly fish and someone got stung while we were at the hotel.
•The swimming pool is fresh water, so a bit cold – the sea is warmer.
•If you are a qualified diver your first dive is free, snorkeling equipment is also free and you don’t have to got out far to see fish.

The day or overnight trip to Havana is enough I believe and talking to people who paid extra to stay for two nights at the start of their holiday - they felt that two nights was to much and doing Havana independently you also don't get a guide. The historic day tour is 51 pesos or £33(exchange rate is currently 1.54 against GBP)

We took our own private taxis to Veredero at 90 pesos (25 each if you take the tour), and shared with another couple, as the hotel tour is not long enough and the taxi driver will wait for you as long as you need. We are so glad we did not stay overnight in Veredero, as it is very commercialized and not nearly as beautiful setting as Breezes Jibacoa.

We went with average expectations and were very impressed. The customer service of Cuban's is not always fantastic and they do things in their own time and do tend to stick to the rules a bit, rather than going out of their way for the customer -but that is their culture and they are a fairly developing tourism destination, so if you want five star western service - go to the States.

As with other reviews, this is somewhere I would go back to and recommend. I understand that this hotel has one of the highest rates of repeat guests to hotels in Cuba. Surely that says it all, some people we met had been to the hotel 4 or 5 times before!

I went to Breezes Jibacoa with my wife simply because of the reviews on this site and I don’t want to go over again what has been said so often by so many clearly satisfied people, so I will keep it short.

Breezes Jibacoa is quite simply FANTASTIC.

Rooms are a good size, clean and well looked after and the general hotel facilities are truly excellent. There is a great atmosphere there, the staff keen, friendly, enthusiastic and tireless (they work very long days and are always happy). And yes a tip can help towards the beginning of the stay – but you don’t have to keep tipping and they don’t expect you to, it’s up to you. The tireless work of the staff and entertainers helps bring the tourists together, it’s really such a very friendly place.

Fantastic gardens and grounds, all kept perfectly and immaculately clean, the pool cleaned and the beach raked daily. Plenty of space at beach or pool, great to just wander about during the day stopping off at the various bars to try a different cocktail (Mohito’s, natural Daiquiri, Jibacoa coffee and Molito were our personal favourites)

As for the food I really don’t see how anyone couldn’t enjoy it, a truly wonderful choice – I put on over half a stone in a week! And this is the first ‘tropical’ holiday that I’ve been on where I had no stomach problems – I had to bring all the immodium and pepto-bismol home with me!

Having looked at the various reviews etc we went armed with insulated mugs and our drinks kept chilled for an hour or more – well mine didn’t it was always finished off well before that! We also took toilet roll, pens, colouring books, analgesics, soaps etc etc and gave these out wherever we could.

Cuba is a truly fascinating place, we went with our own preconceptions of communism and expectations of what we would find, and were very pleasantly surprised. We did a few trips:

Day trip to Havana – Fantastic! A great day, a truly excellent and knowledgeable tour guide (Eduardo) and a splendid night at the Tropicana show. Havana is an amazing, beautiful and vibrant city and this trip simply served as a taster for us – we can’t wait to go back! Unfortunately on this occasion we only got a week away and so couldn’t arrange a twin centre holiday but in future we will and will stay 3 or 4 days in Havana.

Scooter tours – essential. In the same way as the Havana trip gave you the opportunity to look at Cuba, to go beyond the resort, so too the scooter tours. Javier is a great guide, lots of fun and truly the best Pinacalada ever at the bar overlooking the tallest bridge in Cuba. We did a couple of tours and thoroughly enjoyed them, finding them informative and fun.

I personally don’t like going back to places for a holiday, ‘it’s never the same as the first time’, and ‘there’s a big wide world out there to explore’. But this time it’s different, we WILL go back to Cuba and we WILL go back to Jibacoa. What more can I say.

Sorry about this 'gloomy' review but it does NOT reflect on the resort of Brisas Jibacoa.
My wife (Gill) and I arrived at the resort on 13/11/05 after a very long journey from the UK (22 hours from leaving home - doh!) (you lucky Canadians!) Anyway, my wife contracted a virus on the way to Cuba, which confined her to bed the next day (doh!) Her temperature was WAY up, so I called-in the Doctor from the resort (her temperature was 40c+). He treated her for 4 days with oral anti-biotics and one shot in the backside and on the fifth day told me to take her to the 'Cira Garcia' hospital in Havana as he thought she had pneumonia in both lungs, but was not certain without seeing an Xray.
We were in a taxi within 15 minutes and on our way for the 90 minute taxi ride to the hospital (doh!)
On arrival my wife was admitted straight away and after a full examination the doctor saying that she was 'very poorly' (double doh!)
The diagnosis WAS pneumonia in both lungs after all the 'tests' and Xrays.

OK - without going into ALL the personal details about this case, I must say that the Brisas Jibacau resort were quite good about the way they treated my wife (6 days in hospital) by supplying fresh fruit and drinks whilst she was in hospital. I had to submit a list of food/drink requirements every visit (orange juice & melon not available every day) to 'customer services' before I visited my wife - 120 mile round trip.

Eventually, my wife was released from hospital to travel home to the UK.

We are now back home in England (after a 26 hour journey - delays/delays/lost bagage etc - doh!)

Gill is recovering slowly, she has to see a 'specialist' here in England later this week, so hope she will fully recover soon.

I would like to thank 'Ciro Dominguez' who is a waiter in the buffet restaurant for helping me to 'hold-it together' whilst my wife was in hospital, also to Murrey and Helen from Canada and Nick and Carol from England, plus the staff & taxi drivers from Jibacau who all knew of our problem.

A mi hermano Ciro y los amigos,
Muchas gracias,
Besos,
Colin y Gill, desde Ingleterra.

Just returned from Breezes Jibacoa on November 26th. This was my 5th time to cuba, but first time not staying in Varadero. Breezes Jibacoa is in between Varadero and Havana (about an hour from each). It's a truly BEAUTIFUL resort. Being a Superclub - it is adults-only, 24-hour all inclusive, and they have every different kind of drink you can think of (chocolate monkeys, daquiris, marqueritas, you name it - they had it). I can honestly say, that the food at this resort was by far the best I've had in Cuba. Variety was amazing, and everything tasted wonderful. Trust me! I've eaten in Cuba enough times to know when it's good or bad. And this place was fantastic.

My boyfriend and I (we're in our mid-30's) had a great room - on the 2nd floor - overlooking the pool. and because all the shows are outside at night (by the pool) - we could watch them right from our balcony if we wanted to. The disco seemed to get pumping at night while we were there too. The rooms were very spacious and king size bed was surprisingly comfortable!! CD players in all the rooms, and a good sized bathroom with HOT water ALL the time and a hair dryer is provided. They also provide you with a voltage converter in the room if you need it, as well as an ironing board and iron. In-room safes are free of charge as well. We were able to get HBO and CNN on the tv, as well as some good movie channels (although, we didn't watch much tv!).

The resort offers you so much to do if you want to. It is set amongst the mountains, with an amazing coral reef right off the beach. We spent hours snorkelling and seeing blue, purple and yellow fish, tons of coral and underwater plantlife, and caves. Truly amazing to have this right at your footsteps. I'd reccomned water shoes though, as it's a bit 'rocky' when walking/swimming out to the reef - but it's not far off shore at all. We saw fish about 15 feet from shore, but the nice caves and coral reef is about 100 feet out. - but it's shallow enough that you can walk out to it - you don't have to swim the whole way. There are tons of beach chairs and palapas and trees if you want shade. We could go to the beach at any time of the day, and never have trouble getting a couple of chairs.

There are morning walks and mountain hikes offered every day, as well as trips to Havana (we did the day tour offered by our tour rep - an AMAZING trip and only $51 each for a full day in Havana with lunch included!), and there is an open-air train (trolley-type) ride to a few other cities around the area that you can do, which is only $15. They have volleyball, aqua-aerobics, mini-golf (on the beach), games room with ping-pong, pool tables and fooze ball (sp?). There's a nice gift shop on site, as well as a cigar shop and an internet cafe right in the hotel - $3 for 30 mins, (you don't have to use all the mins at once) and you can redeem any unused minutes and get some money back if you want to. You can exchange your money right at the front desk. If you have leftover convertable pescos at the end of your stay, they will change them back for you, but will only give you American dollars back. so, you'll have to change that back once you're home.

There are about 5 bars at the hotel - a really nice piano bar being one of them, and the lobby bar is open 24-hours. The beach bar and grill has great tasting hamburgers and pizzas and french fries, and is right on the beach, so you never have to go far for drinks or food while you're soaking up the sun! The resort was immaculately clean - you NEVER saw any trace of garbage or gum wrappers or anything! The staff there is very very friendly and they work so hard. This was one of the best holidays I've ever had, and i trave a LOT! I would recommend Superclubs Breezes Jibacoa to anyone looking for a really amazing holiday with lots to do, GREAT food (i promise!!) and a peaceful, beautiful setting that looks like something right out of a movie. If you have any questions about this resort, feel free to email me at golfingqt@hotmail.com.

What makes this a great resort is the friendliness that the guests display to each other. This is largely due to the staff's tireless enthusiasm.

The rooms were large and very well-maintained. Air con was efficient, there was a spacious balcony, and the cleaning staff were very inventive when folding towels.

Read the tips given in other reviews. We purchased thermal mugs (not easily available in the UK, but we found them reasonably priced at Starbucks) and never had a problem with drinks getting warm. We also took unwanted items to give to the staff and locals, who really needed anything that you could give them.

We travel a lot in Europe, and food is usually an important part of our holidays. The food here was pretty mediocre by comparison with what we usually expect. However, you don't go to the Caribbean (especially Cuba) for the food. The Italian restaurant (you can eat there once per week) was excellent, and the Cuban restaurant (also once per week) was good. The buffet had a very large selection, and the food was acceptable. My only tip to the resort would be to offer fewer choices and to take more time in preparing them.

The activities are excellent. We greatly enjoyed the volleyball, water volleyball, beach games, tennis etc... However, if you want a secluded and quiet resort where you are left alone to read your book, this place probably isn't for you. There is latin music by the (fantastic) pool from 10am, and the beach often has activities and music, too. There is a slight Butlins'-esque feel to the place.

If you enjoy seeing dancing shows, then you should enjoy the evening entertainment. We preferred to do other things. However, be warned that the piano bar closes during the show, and the majority of the other guests do want to watch it. We did watch the illusionist (who looks like an extra from a 70s porn movie, as does his assistant), who was very good, even if the show was a little long.

We were there in the week after "singles" week. The nightclub was never very busy, but then we didn't go to the resort for clubbing.

We went on the morning bicycle ride, which was pleasant, although very tiring due to the equipment. The afternoon walk was also nice, apart from the "farm", which included a chained alligator, and other animals kept in disgustingly small cages.

Havana was well worth a visit. We went on a day tour organised through a member of staff, who gave us the contact details of a friend. The trip cost us $60 for two (it would have been the same for four), and was far cheaper than the organised tour for $51 each. Plus you receive one on one attention from a local who is willing to answer your questions (even the probing ones that the staff at the resort dodged). Ask around - nearly everyone who works at the resort knows someone who will take you on a tour. It was perfectly safe.

Finally, if travelling from the UK, I would advise against Cubana. We travelled on Virgin (which was excellent), but a number of guests who flew Cubana had their flight cancelled and had to leave a day late and return via Madrid on a chartered plane.

Thoroughly recommended.
