Arrival in Cuba:
Upon arrival in Cuba it was very easy to find our Thomson rep. He directed us to the bureau d'change and made it clear to everyone that he would wait for us to change our money. Fortunately it was not a busy day otherwise there could have been some long delays at the airport.
Best part: Helpful thomson rep pointing us in the right direction
Worst part: In busy periods you may have to wait hours to change cash
Coach transfer:
The coach transfer was much quicker than we anticipated. It was an excellent start to the holiday as we got to see a fair bit of the island.
Best part: Quicker than expected and great views
Worst part: None
Arrival at Superclub:
It became a bit of a scramble for pens and paper at the hotel. A coach of 30 or so people arrived and they only had one member of staff showing us where to sign and what we needed to to to book in. Bearing in mind that most people had been travelling for the best part of 15 hours it could have been a bit more relaxing but it certainly did not run our first day.
Best part: Beautiful hotel entrance and foyer, friendly staff
Worst part: People were tired and the hotel was slightly unprepared for the numbers
Rooms:
Rooms were spacious, ours had a great view from the large balcony. I could not fault anything in the rooms, they were clean and quite basic but contained everything you need for a good holiday. The only small downside was that the floors are all tiled with shiny stone which got very slippery after a shower or if sun tan lotion fell onto it. This wasnt a huge problem for us but it might be for some.
Best part: Clean, spacious, contained everything we needed
Worst part: Slippery floors
Food:
I think this is a common theme with all inclusives...there is PLENTY to eat, and it is all quite nice...but, it does get repetitive if you are there for over a week. There is one other restaurant that you can book for one night which makes a change. The staff are really nice in the restaurant, and are always around to fill your drink. My girfriend did get a bad stomach bug at the end of the week but this should not deter you, its just one of those risks with all inclusive cuisine.
Best part: Regular drinks top ups, plently to chose from, several themed nights
Worst parts: Did get repetitive for a 10 day holiday, girlfriend got a bit sick.
Location:
The location is in the middle of nowhere. This isnt a bad thing if you want to relax but there is no nightlife/resort centre nearby. This didnt bother us because we had 2 days booked in Havanna so we knew we would be out for a bit but if you want more than just a relaxing holiday on the beach you may be better of in Varadero or Havanna. The resort does try hard to ensure that there are plenty of activities and the taxis are cheap (and are definetly up for a bit of a barter with you...just make sure you agree the price before you set off). I havent seen a hotel with such beautiful gardens before, in May the flowers were blooming and the beach was lovely. You can walk up the hill behind the hotel and get some great shots of the coral.
Best bits: Great for a quiet holiday, can get to places if you get a taxi.
Worst bits: No resort centre limits you in the evening, very quiet
Activities
The staff ensure that activities run all through the day. They try and get everyone involved and take great pleasure in the fact that there are no Americans there! They will approach you to join in but will not force you. They arrange activities including football, volleyball, cuban dancing, evening entertainment, hiking up the hill, boules, and once a week they do a Cuban themed BBQ at lunch which was pretty good. It was good that they could focus on adult activities due to the fact that children under 15 are not allowed at the resort.
Best bits: Plenty to do, and you dont feel forced
Worst bits: Again, a bit repetitive, but we dont hold it against them, they try hard
Beach
The beach was amazing, the water was warm and the sea was a beautiful turquoise, it was just like you would expect the Carribbean. We saw plenty of crabs and fish in the sea, you can borrow snorkels for an hour from the scuba centre or take your own (we regret not taking our own ones) we saw loads of fish and we felt safe in the water. There are jellyfish about but i think you have to be really really unlucky. There is a beach hut serving drinks from 11am-5/6pm and food around lunch time which is basic 'fast food' stuff like burgers, sausages, salad, chips etc.
Best bits: Clean, beautiful, spacious, nice beach bar
Worst bits: Jellyfish around, we forgot our snorkels!
Overall:
Excellent value for money, everyone was friendly, all inclusive really did mean all inclusive, the rooms were just what you need. It is out in the sticks though so I would not reccommend for people who want lively evenings, the evening entertainment is very good but you might get bored if you are there 10+ days. Makes sure that you try the snorkelling, hike the mountain and take a couple trips to Havanna and Cayo Blance (the most amazing beach on the planet).
