HOLA! We travelled to Breezes Jibacoa January 12-19, 2005. We were 3 couples. This is an absolutely beautiful resort. I asked all 5 of my travelling companions for their honest opinions before writing this review, and of course included my own. So here goes:
WEATHER: I stated this first because it's an important factor in vacation decision making. We had two solid days of beautiful sunshine and calm water when we first arrived. Unfortunately, it turned cool for the remainder of the trip. It only rained a couple of times, but the wind was strong and consistent, making it difficult to relax on the beach, whether it was sunny or not. The red flag was in the water for all of these windy days, which was disappointing to our one avid diver and all of our snorkellers. Average temperature for the cooler days was 24 degrees. I'm thinking March might be a better time of year for this location. It might be better to go further south for this time of year.
ARRIVAL: This process was quite painless. Airport was quick and efficient. Bus ride was approximately 1&1/2 hours, with a quick stop at the highest bridge for a great pina colada and beautiful scenery. Check in was quick and cheerful.
MONEY: You can exchange for convertible pesos at the airport and at the resort. At the resort you, though, you cannot switch back to Canadian currency, only at the airport. It's comparible to converting to American dollars. Cuba has two versions of the peso (their local peso and the tourist convertible peso).
ROOM: We had an ocean-view room (#1201) on the ground floor. The view was beautiful. I would next time choose a second-floor room so we could leave the curtains open without worrying about who's walking by (not that anyone bothered us in any way, but you know). The room was clean and very sweet, with a hair dryer, in-room safe, CD-player, bottled water, and a converter for the curling iron, etc. There is a musty smell (due to humidity, I guess), but it's not terrible (maybe bring a deoderizer). Our room was spotlessly cleaned everyday by our room maid, Janet. I left her a gift package everyday and she thanked us with beautiful swans and hearts made out of towels (very creative). I got to see pictures of her family and speak with her often. She's just great. Thank you, Janet!
GROUNDS: Georgous, green, and clean. Nuff said. Everyone there works hard and takes pride in what they do.
BEACH: The beach is beautiful. Not the whitest of sand but not rocky or anything. The water is full of coral, so not all swimmers would love it. I chose this resort for the snorkelling and diving so we were quite happy (when it was nice out, that is). The water is clear and FULL of fish! Ask Gilberto at the beach grill for some pizza bread to feed the fish. They will swarm you. It's just so much fun. My fiance had his first tropical scuba-dive and he just loved it, said he saw so much (baracuda, blowfish, etc.). His tour guide was very helpful and really wanted him to enjoy his dive. We also got to take out a hobbie cat and sunfish sail. Manual was great and did whatever he could to make our day even better.
FOOD & RESTAURANTS: After reading all of the past review of Cuban resorts, I wasn't expecting too much as far as food went. Considering that, I found out that the food was great. The breads and cheeses were to die for, and the deserts were plentiful and very good. The buffet was our best choice for supper as there was a lot to choose from and a different theme every night. Some of our group were tiring of it by the end of our week, but nobody went hungry, that's for sure. The one downside was that we did notice that lineups were forming for the buffet, which isn't cool. We always got there in time though and never got stuck in line. We loved the Cuban restaurant for food and service. The food at the Italian restaurant was OK, but the service was awesome there. We had SO much wine (giggle). We had music played for us every night, regardless of where we ate. But our absolute favourite place to be for lunch was the BEACH GRILL. Gilberto and the rest of the gang there really aim to please. They're funny and very friendly, kind of like you've know them all your life. Very laid back. Loved it.
ENTERTAINMENT & ANIMATION STAFF: Great people. Very genuine. The shows were good. It's not Vegas, so don't expect it. My favourite shows were the ones where they brought up people from the audience. These people are funny and know how to have a good time. When the weather was bad, they did everything they could to ensure a good time was had by all (dancing lessons, games room, volleyball, and of course, the ever-so-famous Cuba vs. Canada hockey tournaments - watch out, they're pretty fast).
NIHGTLIFE: If you're looking for clubs and great discos, this is NOT the place for you. You're an hour and a bit from Varadero and Havana so nightlife is limited. The disco was open every night but it's small and not a lot of people. We had our own group so it wasn't so bad. We weren't looking for a full nightlife, so we didn't mind this. The bar staff are fun though. The average age of guests was 35-50 so keep that in mind spring-breakers. Not a crazy party-place!
EXCURSIONS: We took the "Seafari Cayo Blanco" catameran trip ($75 convertible pesos per person). We asked for this trip specifically based on other reviews. We were lucky to do this when the weather was good. The trip includes transportation to and from Varadero, a dolphin show, the catameran, open bar, and lunch in Cayo Blanco (very good). On the way to Cayo Blanco, the boat stops so you can snorkel (they had enough equipment for everyone), and you had the option to purchase lobster for $10 to munch on. The lobster was one of the best I've tasted (my fiance bought two!). Cayo Blanco is absolutely beautiful with it's pristine waters. Everyone should see it at least once!
We also hired a taxi to bring four of us to Havana for a day ($20 pesos each). The driver (Orlando) stayed with us the whole day. He brought us all around the city (to the castles, to the Havana market). He would stop anytime we asked so we could take pictures, etc. Havana is an experience in itself. There are a lot of beggars (including children) at the market so beware. It's kinda sad. The market had some nice things, but not a lot of jewellery. My friend was looking for silver and couldn't find anything of the like. But we did find some great souvenirs at reasonable prices. We heard that the resort's bus tour to Havana is very rushed and not as nice so I was happy we took this route.
We took the scooter tours (range from $9-$25 pesos per person). They were really fun. Xavier and Adrienne are great tour guides (very funny). We went to Santa Cruz to learn about the town and the people who live there. I definately recommend the scooters, and there's a bunch to choose from.
We also did the morning hike and the afternoon walk with Eric (free), also a great guide. However, you never know if he's pulling your leg! He's comical. We got to see a couple of local farms and see how they live. A real lesson to see how things there differ from home.
TRAVEL TIPS:
- Bring insulated mugs for your drinks. The glasses they use are really small. The mugs will get you a larger drink and will keep it cold longer.
- Bring your own snorkel stuff so you can spend as much time as you like playing with the fish.
- Bring toilet paper on your excursions. Not all bathrooms have it and if they do, they usually want money for it.
- Bring gifts and tip if you can. It's not required, but they deserve it and are most appreciative. Favourite items are used clothes & shoes, and make up/hygiene items, and toys for kids. Anything Canada too (keychains, etc.). Your local dollar store should have all these items.
- Bring $25 (convertible pesos) to leave the country (to be paid at the airport).
- Book your a la cartes and massages the minute you arrive if possible to guarantee a spot, especially if you're only there a week.
- Learn a bit of Spanish. The cubans really like it when we try to speak to them in Spanish and they are very helpful in the process. I just bought CD's to learn from for my trip to the caribbean.
OVERALL: Not sure that we'll go back only because we want to see the rest of the caribbean. But having said that, it's a beautiful resort with genuine staff, and a good time was had by all! Recommended! If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to oblige. Just email me at boyd_stacey@yahoo.ca.
I want to send a big thanks to TripAdvisor and to those that reviewed this resort. It was all a big help in planning and enjoying our vacation!
SALUT!
