We were at Jibacoa from Dec 6-13, 2004 and loved it.
FOOD
We found the food to be quite good in general. I think the Cuban food is much blander than we are used to, but still is very tasty. Lots of variety in the buffet, especially for lunch. The al a carte meals were very good, with Martino's having a great romantic atmosphere. On the last day we were there, we had room service deliver breakfast which was great, and a service that is underutilized
RESORT
This resort is in the middle of the country side, so what you are looking for determines if that is a good thing or not. On the plus side, it is nice and quiet due to the isolation, and the surroundings are beautiful (the grounds are in immaculate shape and gorgeous). It is half way to Varadero and Havana, so if you want to see both of them it is central. On the negative side, if you want the party scene, Varadero is where it is. As well, to go sight seeing, it is a hour drive both ways, and there is some cost associated with it.
BEACH
We were very happy with the beach. It was clean, the sand is fine, and the water is amazing. Lots of room and lots of chairs. The snorkeling is worth the price of the trip. I would go back for the snorkeling even if the place was a dive! We had a couple of red flag days, so it cut down on our swimming, but we still seen tonnes of fish, schools of swordfish that would eat bananas out of your hands, an eel, baracuda, stingray, and gorgeous coral. A must do.
BARS
We are not big drinkers, but found the drinks WAY too strong and had to throw some out for that reason. We ended up asking for 'just a little rum' after a few days. The cups are ridiculously small and a mug is a good idea. The beer is quite good, but compared to other resorts we have been to, the cocktails were below average. Probably the only disappointment we had with the resort.
ROOM
We had an Oceanview Suite and it was fantastic. Huge, 2 bathrooms, a huge balcony, a gorgeous bed and a spectacular view. Well worth the upgrade.
TOURS
We did a few tours. Havana was very cool....the Spanish architecture is a must see. We were shorted on the market visit, so ask for at least an hour there. There are tonnes of beggarsWe also did the Tropicana, and I must admit I was skeptical about a dancing show in another language, but it was very good. The setting is very cool. You CAN take cameras and video cams but have to pay extra for it (worth it).
We did the day trip to Varadero and enjoyed it. The beach is amazing, the market was good, and we also incorporated the dolphin swim and show into it. That was fantastic and very recommended. The dolphins have lots of room, and the water is fine. They were not able to get a picture to the hotel for us, so we were very happy that we took our underwater camera along. We had to ask Martha about adding the dolphin swim to the trip, so if anyone is interested in the swim or the show, you probably need to ask about it seperate.
The scooter tours were cheap and worthwhile. We went to the Bellamar caves and enjoyed it. The Pina Coladas at the Suicide Bridge are INCREDIBLE.
ONE IMPORTANT TIPS FOR TOURS: in most of the restrooms off of the resort THERE IS NO TOILET PAPER!, so take some in a bag just in case.
Overall we were very happy...nice resort, nice room, decent service, nice beach, great snorkeling. Cuba is a very interesting country with a neat history. Highly recommended.
