My wife and I just returned from Superclubs Breezes Jibacoa. Basically we expected to rough it, as we normally stay in Fairmont Hotels throughout North America. All I can say is please manage your expectations when coming to Cuba. We love it in Cuba, its' very nice and exotic. The weather always seems accomodating and the ocean views are breathtaking.
We scored a great deal coming down, and decided to try a last minute deal with some research. We deviated from Fairmont Hotels this trip because of the President's Club Director's attitude, and besides there is the rest of the world to see.. where Fairmont isn't. We stayed 16 nights and took advantage of their 'renewal of vows' package. They set us up with a tropical ocean view suite with all the trimmings. The ocean view was stunning and sitting out on the deck we said to ourselves 'this is the life'. The renewal of vows package included a ceremony, cake, Martino restaurant reservations, upgrade to ocean view suite, and a voucher to celebrate your anniversary next year same month for half the price at the hotel. The price is an extra $100US dollars. The suite included two bathrooms, oversized master, robes, CD player, 2 tvs, double balcony, wooden patio furniture, double closets, living room furniture, nook, fridge, stove, glasses and again, not to mention the breath taking ocean view.
The food quality was good, but the selection was less than average. Buffet is quite repetitive but you can always find something to chow down on. I think the selection was of benefit, because it encouraged us not to overeat, thus we didn't gain like 20 pounds during the trip. The drink quality is also below average, watered down, but this is to be expected with any all-inclusive. Martino's of course is the best restaurant for fine dining, and we actually took some liking at the Cuban restaurant. I liked La Taberna's soup, and if you order the seafood creole, you get lobster with your meal (the Hemmingway Red Snapper was also excellent). The other beef I had with the restaurants was that they will not accomodate requests such as watermelon or ice cream for lunch.
The sand was coarse to my liking. I find the sand in Varadero nice but fine for the eyes. It seems that fine sand and contact lenses don't mix, at least with me. I seldom found that the sand at Jibacoa to be a problem to my eyes.
There is corral to see, however I met a few vacationers scraping the corral and needing medical attention. Jibacoa was great for snorkeling, but I minimized on the activity because of the hazard.
The Rio Canimar trip is a must-do. I'm a city slicker who seldom camp or partake in 'wild'erness activities, but for $53 per person US, this tour gets you an hour of guided snorkeling, swimming in a fresh water cave, riding a boat down rio canimar river, buffet at the ranch, horse back riding, construction site-seeing, a stop over at Matanzas market and a stop looking-over Suicide Bridge in Cuba.
The Scooter Tour is a cheap must-do activity as well. The Afternoon walk tour was not bad. The bus tour of varadero was ok, but if you're looking for an in depth history lesson, better take the Havana tour.
Shows were so-so. My favorite activity was beach volley-ball. There's always contests going on. During our trip there was Oktoberfest, singles week, and halloween. There are games and contests going on everyday. But, we weren't much into the partying scene. We enjoyed the resort for its' beautiful mountainous vegetation surroundings. The resort is secluded and peaceful.
Lastly, don't expect this resort to be spotless. The general construction of the resort is ok, but the details of the resort is not kept up. For example in the room - furniture was not new and a bit worn over the years, tile grout is not clean, paint is not applied properly, chips in the woodwork, tile was not constructed professionally, bathtub was a bit old and rusted, marble looked a bit outdated, air conditioners made a bit of a noise. The grounds - concrete was not set properly, construction and noise while renovating Ranchon was apparent, grounds a bit dated, tennis courts not in great condition, pool not completely clean, ocean furniture cracked, etc.
Employees are nice when treated nice, but they have their bad days as well. So service will fluctuate from day to day, from the grounds keeper all the way up to general sales manager. I did receive some attitude from the hotel employees, but they made it up with a genuine desire to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.
One note, don't expect too much phoning in Cuba. Its' $2 per minute, and caught them overcharging 2 phone calls. I did a 2 minute phone call to Canada, and my $20 cdn bill turned into $2 US after service charge and expenses. After some analysis with the manager, I was credited $9US, and still felt I was ripped off because the phone call was 2 minutes and 3 seconds. All their phone calls will be __ minutes and 3 seconds, so expect to be dinged that extra $2US. In addition, incoming calls are next near impossible. Phone calls from Canada was 1 for 20 in the number of calls receives for attempts. They are notorious for hanging up on incoming calls to get their hotel guests calling out at $2US a minute, or at least that was the general consensus after talking with some other guests. Use e-mail, it works pretty well, and you get an hour for only $6.
The hotel is not a 5 star, but for a developing country and price paid, its' definitely a good deal. We are likely to return next year and go another round at roughin'it.
