My husband and I just returned from one week at Superclubs Breezes Jibacoa – October 9th-16th, 2004. Listed as a 4 star resort, I would say that it lived up to its expectations for a Cuban resort. We booked our trip through escapes.ca and paid $1600 all-inclusive for the week for both of us. We are frequent travelers to many parts of the world and are in our early 30’s.
The Resort
Well laid out, easy to get around and quite lovely, but nothing too spectacular. It is about 6 years old, and well maintained. Staff is very friendly from bartenders to gardeners. There are many different activities including beach volleyball, sand hockey, dance and Spanish lessons, water aerobics, gym facilities, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, and more – all included in your package. Keep in mind that this resort in basically in the middle of nowhere – halfway between Havana and Veradero.
The Rooms
We stayed in an oceanfront, ground floor room (1204). Small room with king size bed, a small table with two chairs, tv, desk, large closet, safe, good size bathroom, but most importantly - an AMAZING beachfront ocean view. The room was very clean, and the bathroom had a good hair dryer. There was a coffee maker in the room too. However, the biggest complaint for us was no mini-fridge (typical Breezes) but they did supply you with two big bottles of spring water everyday.
The Food
Generally okay – not good, but okay - not a lot of variety in the buffet. However, we’re not very picky so always found something to fill us up. The weirdest part was no lettuce or tomatoes available at all during this time of year (so we were told). Baked good of all types were very good! The Italian restaurant had excellent food and finally a good glass of wine! Cuban was good – with excellent service. The Beach Bar/Grill was closed (and will be for all of October) but they set a temporary one and would serve buffet style burgers, chicken and pizza at lunchtime. Might be a little tricky in Cuba if you have specific dietary requirements. No smoking is allowed inside any of the restaurants.
The Drink
Drinks were great. They were available at the pool and beach during the day, and at the disco and piano bar at night. The Lobby bar is open 24 hours a day!
Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is no longer included as part of your package, but if you are certified, you will get your first dive free. Since we have been diving about 5 times before, but are not certified, we had to take the free pool class before going out into open water. This class was a joke – I probably wouldn’t have let half the people who took it into the water! The class was very poorly organized and not very good. However, the dive itself was great for $30USD per person and the dive masters were friendly – just check your air. Half the people on our dive didn’t start out with a full tank and had to surface early. All dives are boat dives in various locations around the resort. Overall, I would definitely dive here again, but I would be extremely hesitant about going with a nervous first-timer. Snorkeling is almost as good as the diving so you might want to just stick to that since it’s free!
Scooter Tours
We went on two scooter tours – one to the Pirates Cove with Adrian and on the Sunset Tour with Javier. I would highly recommend both of these tours – but don’t do the Sunset one unless you have some experience. You basically drive off-road, up the side of a mountain for a breathtaking view! The best part of these tours is the price! $12USD for the Pirates Cove/Fishing Village/Pina Colada Tour and $9USD for the Sunset Tour.
Night Life
Every night there is a show at the outdoor stage – some shows are better than others. The Disco opens up after the show and the Piano Bar is open before and after. PEOPLE are what make this resort fun. We met so many wonderful people from all over Canada and Europe – they made sure we always had a good time. Special thanks to Jo & Greg, Paul & Cathy, Thomas & Fabian, Mark & Claudia, Brent & Meghan, Ron & Lucien and Jimmy for making sure everyday was a blast!
Overall Comments
If you can get a good deal – go, it’s worth it! This vacation doesn’t quite compare to our experience at the Riu Tropical Bay in Negril (2001), or Breezes Curacao (2003), but at the price we paid, we’re more than satisfied. Would we go back to Breezes Jibacoa? Maybe but probably not since we like to explore different places – but we will definitely go back to Cuba!
