We flew direct from London via Sunwing Feb 15 to 22nd. Flight was fine, hot breakfast was served as the flight leaves at 6:00 am. The arrival process at the Varadero airport was quite easy and efficient. We were soon on our bus heading to Breezes learning about the areas we were driving through. Our tour guide on the bus was quite informative "for you to know" was his line of choice. We arrived at the hotel before some of the rooms were ready, however, it didn't much matter. We had a couple of drinks in the lobby, changed into our suits that we had in our carry on luggage and waited for the room key. Probably 1 hour at the most.
In our group that flew down there were 10 of us. Two couples, including ourselves booked the tropical suites, and the others had pool view rooms.
Our suite was in building 4 room 2130. We faced the beach and we were right near the beach bar. Great location and a wonderful room. Spacious, clean. The air condtioning works overtime. We booked this room as it as 1 1;/2 bathrooms which some days can be very appealing. The fridge in the room was stocked with water, mineral water, juices and a bottle of red wine.
Every room has 2 cigars and 2 chocolates upon arrival. The maids keep the room clean and stocked. If there was something that we needed, we just left a note. Shower pressure is just okay but it can get very very hot.
Like the others have written, the buffet always had something and some days were better food days than others. Yes, Nelson makes quick fantastic eggs, omelets. His day off is Friday and the guy who covers for him is much slower and doesn't seem to have Nelson's technique. The food is cool -you would expect a poached egg that is just coming out of the kitchen to be hot but they aren't.
Martinos was very very good. Better tasting wine and we each had a wonderful meal. I had the filet and it was tender and juicy and cooked perfectly.
We ate lunch at the beach bar every day. Hamburgers, fish, chicken - all tasty and the view was amazing. Of course we had to get our plaque and have it put up with all the others.
4 other friends joined us at the resort on Monday and we all did a private tour (Jorge) to Havana. It was fantastic and he is a great tour organizer. All 14 of us learned about Havana and Cuba from very informative and lovely tour guides. We had a lunch at a private restaurant (home) and it was great. The best meal we had all week. We decided the length of the tour as well and we left the hotel at 9:00 am and we were back by 7:30 pm. It apparently rained at the hotel while we spent the day in Havana under sunny skies.
We too did the trek up the mountain. If you haven't walked,or moved in a while, this is not something you should consider doing. We had quite a few people on our climb that shouldn't have been doing it. The ground was also wet and it was difficult to get a grip with your footing. Its about 20 minutes of gruelling work straight up. Lovely when you get to the top though. It was great exercise that is for sure.
The staff do work very hard and still smile through it in that heat. We met some lovely people, both staff and guests.
We had a very enjoyable, relaxing week. We as a group figure we'll go back in a few years. There are so many other places to see. There was someone there that was on their 22nd trip to Breezes Jibacoa.
The flight home was delayed 14 hours and we found out about this the night before we were leaving so we were at the hotel another 11 hours which was fantastic. Would rather be there than at the airport.
Departing Varadero airport wasn't as good as arriving. Waiting in 1 long line up to go to another long line up. Duty free shopping is much better after you get through security. Their overhead speaker system leaves a lot to be desired as you can't hear what is being said so you must keep an eye on the tv's and the plane.
All in all we had a great week - this place needs some cosmetic enhancements to bring it back to "new" again. It was a wonderful, relaxing week and we all enjoyed it.
We went to the Royal Hideaway in Cayo Enscenachos last year as a group and we had to stop comparing Breezes to it. The Royal Hideaway by far out shines Breezes. The Royal is a better hotel, newer, fantastic food and top notch service. But we wanted to try some place different and picked Breezes partly due to the reviews on this site. We still had a great time and made the best of it. We were with family and friends in heat and sunshine. It was fabulous.
Enjoy your time in Cuba and at Breezes Jibacoa - remember you aren't working, cleaning or cooking - its a great week already!!
