My boyfriend and I just got back from a one-week stay at the Breezes Jibacoa (Oct 14-21), and we are already planning to back next year. The resort was absolutely gorgeous and I have no complaints whatsoever. I have never been to an all-inclusive, so I have nothing to compare this resort against, but it exceeded all of my expectations.
The room: We had an ocean view room, and I would recommend one. It was worth the extra $100 we paid to be able to open our curtains and be able to look at the beautiful ocean every day. It also seemed to be quieter than a pool room as the nightly entertainment is next to the pool. The room was large, clean and comfortable. We had a mini fridge stocked with water, juice and pop which was very nice. The rooms are not fancy, but we weren't expecting them to be so that was fine. Over the course of the week we had two cockroaches come into the room, but this should be expected in a tropical climate. If you are not willing to put up with the odd bug here or there then perhaps a tropical country is not for you.
The staff: The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I have read a lot of reviews on here that talk about the front desk ladies being rude or aloof. This wasn't our experience at all. Everyone had a smile and at no point did we feel anyone was being rude. The housekeeping was great. We brought little gifts for them (makeup, hair accessories, first aid kits, sanitary supplies, gum, toys, school supplies, etc.) and left them every morning. Every afternoon we were thanked with elaborate towel "sculptures".
The beach: Absolutely gorgeous. The most beautiful beach I have ever been to in my life. We spent almost every day on the beach relaxing or snorkelling in the reefs. The snorkelling was the highlight of the vacation for us. There were thousands of beautiful, colourful fish and creatures. Don't feed them though because they are becoming aggressive due to people feeding them. Both my boyfriend and I were bit by fish (not that it hurt) and it is not necessary to feed them to see them - they are everywhere! We didn't have water shoes, but I would recommend them for checking out the tidal pools off to the right of the beach and for looking for shells. There are lots of beach chairs so it is completely unnecessary to reserve chairs in the morning. It is a public beach, so the local people from town were there, but we enjoyed this (the fact that locals are allowed on the beach is why we chose this resort over one in Varadero where they are banned from their own beaches). We had read a review on here before we left where the reviewer referred to these people as "local toughs" but nothing could be further from the truth. For the most part it was families and children, and they were all very friendly. We were not harrassed by anyone, so that isn't a worry. Since this is the only resort on the beach (the resort next door is currently closed for renovations) it was never very crowded and you could walk very far without seeing many other people.
The food: I have seen a lot of people on here complaining about the food and I think some of the complaints are pretty unfair (especially the one where the guy complained for a paragraph about the wine - you're in Cuba, not France!!!). Everyone knows you don't go to Cuba for the food. The food here was fresh and they did make an effort to change it up a bit every night. I didn't get sick from anything I ate, and I have definitely had much worse. Every day I was able to find things that I liked, and I think it would be impossible to go hungry! For lunch most days we went to the grill on the beach and it was great! Everything there is made to order and is very, very good. Plus there are cute little cats around who are more than willing to help you finish off any little morsels of chicken or fish that you might want to give them. The a la carte restaurants were nice as well - at the Taverna you MUST try the farmer's soup, it was one of the best soups I have ever had in my life!
The drinks: You must have the pina coladas from the pool bar. Oh. My. God. SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD!!!!
The excursions: We only did one excursion - the Colonial Havana trip - and it was definitely worth it! Our tour guide (Fidel) was entertaining and extremely informative. I learned more about Cuba from him than I could have ever imagined. It is a great tour with lots of opportunities for pictures and even some free time. We also heard great things about the catamaran/dolphin excursion and are planning to do that one next year.
Entertainment/Activities: We mostly avoided doing many activities because we were there to relax and snorkel, but there were tons of daily activities and many of them looked really fun. The activity we did do, and strongly recommend, is the hike up the hill and the tour through the farms. You get amazing views of the ocean and the resort and you get to meet some local farmers. Bring gifts for them as they give you sugar cane, coconuts and other fruit. If you can, bring them school supplies, toothbrushes/toothpastes and soap. They specifically asked us for soap. If you are going to do the hike, just make sure you have appropriate footwear as it is pretty intense at the beginning and would be nearly impossible in flip flops. The nightly entertainment was .... interesting. The dancers are pretty good and the live music is good. The fashion show is kind of weird and we couldn't really figure out why they do it. We skipped the entertainment most nights and opted to sit on our little patio watching the ocean and crabs.
Overall we had a wonderful experience. I would go back to this resort any time, and loved the remoteness of it. One note though, this is not a resort for people who want to party. It isn't Varadero and for the most part it was older couples (I felt like a baby and I'm 25). We weren't there to party, so the quietness suited us just fine.
We loved Breezes Jibacoa and can't wait to return next year!
