Just returned after two weeks holiday from 30 September to 14 October 2007.
Flights and Arrival – stayed overnight at Gatwick and took advantage of the Virgin Atlantic twilight check in service, recommended as no one in the queue. Flight on time and looked after by Virgin as normal. Virgin representatives could have been a bit more visible on clearing arrivals but eventually found the bus and set off. Transfer time from Havana was about an hour or so. Due to quite a few people arriving all at once it was a bit of a ruck to check in (could have been organised a bit better imo) so, as others have posted, take a chill pill, grab a beer and wait for the queue to go down.
Room and Hotel – excellent. Asked for a high, quiet room and ended up with a sea view, more than we could have asked for or expected! Large room, two big beds, kept immaculately clean, always hot water, enough said. The grounds are kept immaculate and we especially enjoyed looking out for the wildlife. The land crabs are really cool, lizards everywhere and looked forward to seeing the leaf cutter ants crossing the path each night on the way back to the room. Grew attached to the resident gecko in the room, just wished I could have brought it home with me. Internet connection was a bit hit or miss but managed to get online eventually.
Food – as others have already said, there was plenty of it and it was generally OK. Took breakfast in the main buffet restaurant, omelettes hot food or continental etc. Didn’t use the main restaurant at lunch, went to the beach restaurant. Snacks ie cheeseburger, hot-dog, pizza and fries etc freshly cooked to order. Evening meal is rotated on a weekly menu with different ‘theme’ nights Jamaican, Mexican, seafood etc. Especially enjoyed the lobster on seafood night! Again, as others have said there was lots of choice and we always found lots to eat. My wife is a veggi and had no problems. The puddings are to die for! Tried both of the speciality restaurants and found them to be excellent. Plenty of choice in the booze department as well but only proper glasses up in the main bars, otherwise clear plastic cups.
Staff – very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. Didn’t really tip but felt we didn’t get a poorer service for it. Entertainment staff work really hard, didn’t take in the shows so can’t really comment. Didn’t bother with the nightclub either.
Pool and Beach – didn’t use the pool, always on the beach. No problem getting a sun bed or hut. The weather meant we could only get into the water and snorkel on 4 or 5 days, this was a disappointment as the reef just off the shore was absolutely unbelievable. Took my own snorkel and flippers so didn’t have to rely on the hotel equipment and it was well worth it. Pack an underwater camera, I didn’t and regretted it!! Other equipment is also available, kayak, pedlo and the cat.
Gym – used it most days. Good enough for a basic cardio workout (couple of bikes and a cross trainer type thing) but a really good selection of weight equipment, free weights and mats area.
Trips – the other downside is that the hotel is miles from anywhere, which is great if that’s what you are looking for, like we were. Went on the shopping trip to Varadero, worthwhile to get out of the hotel for a day and the Historic Havana excursion. Again, worth doing but felt a bit rushed at times. I know others took a taxi out and made their own way around and I would probably recommend that.
Weather – was good for the time of the year, only one rainy day, always hot, rained most nights, sometime monsoon like! Made for some fantastic lightening storms out to sea though!
So, in summary, its like many people have already posted on here. If you are looking to get away from everything and want a relaxing place to unwind then this is for you. If you are after somewhere a bit more happening then look elsewhere. Will definitely return to Cuba but will probably go to one of the other resorts next time.
