We stayed at the Breezes from October 7 - 14th. I'll break down the experience as best I can:
One important thing to remember BRING A PEN! You will need it to fill out customs forms, and hotel registration!
Check In: We arrived at around 10:30pm, there was one reception person on staff, and they handed you a form to fill out with your perticulars, address, passport numbers etc before they gave you the keys... This made check-in a little ackward...otherwise it was o.a few couples saif that an easy way to correct this is to give the paperwork to us ON THE BUS!
The Front desk will switch CASH only, they are unable to do a cash advance from your credit card, but all the stores accept non US visa and MC
Rooms: We were upgraded to an oceanview room (Rm 2200) the room was spotless, not a single bug, and the aircon worked great. A note on the Tv's, make sure you have it set to std (press the top right button on your remote) and you will get all 35 channels instead of the normal 12. The room did have a unstocked minibar, and the balcony is covered which is handy if it rains.
Amenities: The pool was great, wonderfuly clean, and there was never a problem finding a spot in the sun or shade. The games room was well stocked, and even had a small library where you could leave your books when your done. Watch out for the towel layers though, there were a few, but as above, still had plenty of room.
All the bars were great and accesible
Staff: All the staff were really great with slight exception of the front desk, they were hit and miss. All the bar staff were excellent: We found the best drinks were at the pool bar! Best place for a hemingway speciale! The cleaning staff were friendly and very considerate, and the wait staff at the restaurants were very attentive.
The beach: This beach is NOT private and in the summer months is used by locals as well, we were never bothered, and the beach is slightly more pebbly than other beaches in Varadero. The snorkeling is very good, and we took the pedal boats, and another couple we talked to said the catamaran is a must too!
Food: Here is where it goes awry. All the food was good the Beach bar has the best burgers, fries and the grilled fish is to die for. The buffet was good, the omeletes in the morning made to order were the best Ive had in a long time.
A warning: On seafood night, one of the sections (cold appetizers, most seem to agree it was the mussels) gave a large portion of the guests MAJOR food poisoning! Lasting in most cases a week, now dont get me wrong, for the most part the food was very good, and it just happened one night it wasnt prepared properly, which had dire consequences. This is a third world country, and food prep rules are not as stringent, so please be cautious with the cold plates!
The doctor is available 24/7 on site, but there is a fee to see him. 25 CUC. (this fee was waived w/ the food poisoning epidemic)
Overall we thought this was the best hotel we had stayed at in Cuba (we've been to 3), and I can see why people return there year after year.
If it weren't for the food poisoning Id rate the hotel a 9, but with the bad experiance I drop it to a 7, I would still reccomend it to anybody looking for a relaxing vacation as a couple.
