My OH and I have just returned for a fortnight in BJ TOTALLY chilled out.
BJ is brill - even the food which has recieved mixed reviews. We found that it was as good as and similar to the food in a 5 star hotel we went in Lanzarote (granted that they have to import a lot of stuff also).
The room was huge, the bed (also huge) one of the most comfortable we've slept in. Towels were fluffy and plentiful, air con worked well and our garden room was lovely and quiet, The beach was fab with the reef an easy snorkel away. Staff were as mentioned great.
The only slight niggle was that as Breezes is the only hotel in the area, excursions needed at least six people and although the tour reps worked together, this wasn't always possible. As this was our first vist to Cuba we were a little reluctant to go it alone but will certainly consider it if we go back.
One of the biggest benefits we thought was being child-free - the hotel was very tranquil and the lovely pool was free of those infernal inflatables.
Some of the little details i thought might be useful:
As well as towels you get facecloths, small bars of soap for your hands and a large bar for the shower. If you run out soap is only 1 CUC in the shop. They also have shower gel if you want it. Shampoo and conditioner are also supplied but aren't great, particularly if you have dry/coloured hair like me! Again, available in the shop.
Beach towels are great - all seem new and are the size of a bath sheet. As Jibacoa has no other hotels and the beach is virtually monopolised by breezes guests, IMHO there is very little risk of them being nicked (and you having to pay for them).
Tap water is drinkable, but you get an insulated jug and glasses in each room so pick up water from any of the bars as it tastes better.
There is a retractable washing line over the bath.
There is a coffee maker in each room with coffee and tea, whitener and suger - replaced if you use any.
We had a very small fridge in our room so i assume all rooms have one.
The room safe is free.
The quietest part of the beach is towards the gym/watersports centre with lovely trees for shade if you need to get out of the sun.
Best place to go into the water is opposite the beach bar as there are fewest pebbles there and the sand goes out further.
If possible, take clothes you are prepared to leave behind. If you've never been to Cuba before, believe me - you will want to help the people as much as possible.
All those tips about travel mugs are so right - they are great on the beach or if you want to take a large cocktail back to sip on your balcony!
My OH has been weight training for 30 years and thought the gym was one of the better hotel ones he has been to.
Any questions, feel free to contact me on this site. Be warned though - we were bone idle most of the time so can't offer much advice on activities/excursions - sorry!
