“nice chateau but bad quality sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2010

Practical location if you are visiting Le Mans and the Sarthe area. Chateau has nice grounds and you're free to walk around. Room nicely decorated. Well-used mattress did not allow us a decent night of sleep. Did not stay for dinner as we wished to dine out in Le Mans, but in any case there is only one big table in the dining room so everyone sits together. The owner is welcoming but irritatingly patronizing. Be warned also that unusually there are no room keys.

My husband, son & I were the only guests for the 1 night we spent in this gorgeous chateau &, wondering around the halls & grounds, it felt like Sleeping Beauty's castle. We had the Wing Room which was really the whole of the end of a wing with 2 bedrooms - 1 with twin beds & the other with a double plus an entrance hall, large bathroom, smaller bathroom & seperate toilet. The furnishings were comfortable and felt like they had been in the owner's family for many years, adding to the charm. The bathroom & toilet could have done with updating, such as a proper shower (hence the faded elegance reference) but the room was spacious, clean and quiet. The grounds were charming with old stables, a moat & what looked like a deconsecrated chapel.

We wanted a stop for a night en route from the south to the north of France. Le Mans was the ideal spot on the map, so it was a question of finding a suitable hotel. I did not fancy the "out of a packet" hotels that seem to litter this area, presumably to cater for the transient guests like us.

Château d'Eporcé is at La Quinte about 8 miles NW of Le Mans. You can get there easily off the motorway by following their directions from their web site. We did not want to go into Le Mans, so this was a bonus. However it is in the middle of nowhere, so you would have to drive everywhere is you were based there for a time.

I gathered from the French owner,Remy de Scitivaux , who runs it with his wife, that the chateau has been in his family for hundreds of years. They are obviously very busy during the Le Mans 24 race, when a complete team takes over the chateau, but at other times you should be able to book easily.

Dinner starts with a drink and canapes with the owners, then you progress to the dining room. Madame de Scitivaux or her son (a talented chef) does the cooking. And after dinner you join the family for coffee. All very civilised, and with excellent food.

The ground of the chateau are particularly attractive. They do have a pool, but we did not use it as it was raining.

All in all a very pleasant stop in a memorable location with very agreeable hosts
