Festin de Babette is a lively, friendly restaurant situated right next to the river. In the evenings, watching the sun set over the water can be very pleasant and the waiters and waitresses are generally friendly. There are usually a large number of tourists from the surrounding holiday villas etc. but this does not detract from the atmosphere, in fact, we've always found it quite fun to guess where they're all from.
Unfortunately, none of this can make up for the quality of food at the restaurant, which ranges from merely underwhelming to bad. We have been to Festin de Babette three times in three years and have always found the food to be disappointing. We kept going back due to the strong recommendations of our villa's guidebook, however, we never found the elusive combination of meals which justified the reviews.
Our most recent trip featured some of the worst meals we've ever had at a restaurant. One of the starters was literally just a plate of parma ham served with bread and butter (12 euros). A main course we ordered was a plate of four langoustines, which the diner had to deshell, each leaving a small piece of meat roughly the size of a little finger (21 euros). This was accompanied by a little pot of pasta (3 euros extra). Finally to cap it all off, we ordered an apricot tart which was so sour as to be inedible (8 euros). There are some good courses hidden in the menus (the puy lentil and foie gras starter) but they are rare and finding them is a lottery. Better meals and value can be had, in general, by sticking to the cheaper set menus.
In summary, this beautifully located, well-staffed restaurant is dismally let down by the quality of food which struggles to rise above mediocre.
