After travelling for 8 weeks in Italy, my husband needed some quiet green space to relax in and so we chose some small Austrian towns in Carinthia and Styria to restore our calm and avoid the tourist hustle. Gasthaus Kronenwirt in Gurk was outstanding. We had a huge room (€50 per night) with ensuite, furnished with a big double bed, a 4 piece lounge setting and coffee table, TV, plenty of drawer/cupboard space and absolutely spotless (the usual standard in Austria). Breakfast was large (also usual in Austria) consisting of rolls, meats and cheeses and jams and plenty of hot tea and coffee. Hot meals (indoors and outdoors) were available throughout the day and evening at a reasonable price and were tasty and filling. The atmosphere was relaxed, friendly and informal. The Ebner family run the gasthaus and a daughter spoke enough English for us to find out about local transport etc. We recommend Kronenwirt as a great place to stay if you decide to visit Gurk to have a small-town experience in beautiful green, quiet countryside away from the hurly-burly of major tourist cities.
