“Ideal stop over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

Stopped here on the way to Germany. The rooms are old style Auberge, clean and pleasant. Received good service with courtesy and minimum fuss. It was Sunday so the restaurant was closed but the food in the brasserie was first class. The atmosphere was friendly and it is obviously popular with locals. Easy parking. Relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in the town.

We stayed at this hotel on March 31st 2012 on our way to Germany. It's an unpretentious Logis de France which offers good value comfortable en-suite rooms with breakfast. There is free parking in the little road next to the hotel side entrance. The joy of this establishment is it evening menu with excellent local cuisine which belies the unremarkable architecture and surroundings. If you want something grand, rural or folksy this is not the place for you. If you want an overnight stop and really excellent cooking, then we recommend it strongly. The local dish is pig's trotters and you might think that unexciting or off-putting. Give it a go! As a starter, they were imaginatively prepared, unfatty, and with a tasty sauce.

Room Tip: It's a quiet place. All rooms upstairs and there is no lift.

We stayed here again on the way back from a skiing holiday and once again were very happy. Ste Menehould is a rather sleepy, ordinary town with one very nice square - this hotel sits on one of its corners.

The rooms are functional and good value (E55 for a double) but the restaurant (which was bustlng and full when we stayed) is excellent - E28 for four courses including the local delicacy, pigs' trotters (which were a lot nicer than I expected).

Leaving the French alps at dawn and cutting cross country for the last section we were here by 5pm. It's 3 - 4 hours to Calais depending on how fast you drive. Well worth staying at - we will be back next year.

We stopped at this hotel en route to the South of France and so glad we did. The room was perfectly adequate and clean. We had an evening drink in the bar and thought that dinner would be served there. To our suprise, and delight, there is a really nice restaurant at the rear and the food was absolutely delicious. Do wander around the town as there are some interesting houses in the back streets. Would highly recommend this hotel

We stayed here on the way back to the UK from the Alps because we didn't fancy doing the journey in a single day (it's about 3 - 4 hours before Calais).

We (2 adults, 2 kids) loved it. The staff were great, the rooms perfectly adequate and quiet. The food was really really good - and good value too. The area is famous for doing 'pig's trotters' and somewhat nervously I ordered this from the menu. It was a delight.

A quick coffee in the morning and straight on to the motorway for an easy trip to Calais.

In short, a really good place to stop

We have been traveling through France a lot recently on the way back from Germany and stopping at random hotels along the way, many which were disappointing. This time we decided to book ahead in a location approx half way between Germany and Calais - and choose St-Menehould in the Champagne region. Here we found a quaint hotel right in the center of town - Le Cheval Rouge.

I was extremely happy with the stay. Parking was easy right outside the door of the hotel. The rooms were clean and had everything you needed, and best of all the food was amazing, and very very reasonable for France.

The average price of for our main meals was just 8eu and the food was simply sublime. They had great beer on tap and all in all it was the best night of our trip.

Best of all, the rooms were just 50eu a night and the hotel was really nice indeed and the staff very pleasant and spoke English.

I will certainly use it next time we have to go to Germany.

Highly recommended.
