“best restaurant in kato zakros”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

the first restaurant we went to in our visit at kato zakros was the taverna at the end. the one which receives buses full of tourists coming to taste their food. it was good.
but at nikos, or better to say at carmen's, it is not just about the food. they welcome you with a smile, and they keep on smiling! their warmth and friendship were offered to us immediately, so we accepted it! the food is so good!
(i don't know for what reason the fish is so expensive anywhere in crete (15euros a plat, comparing to 3 for greek salad).
the stuffed zucchinis are so delicious! and the fish and the salad and the white cheese! i wanna go back there!
so on top of the good food, you get the warmth of carmen and the others!

and by the way, carmen has a nice room to let, like a private mini villa. i think it is best for couples.
that is why we didn't stay there...

thank you carmen!

“Probably the best taverna in Kato Zakros”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

We have eaten here several times and the food is very good traditional cretan fayre. Good service and in a lovely spot on the beach. The Pastitio and Imam are good and the food is very reasonably priced. The nut and honey crepes are recommended too. They give you traditional appetisers like stuffed vine leaves and cold garlic mashed potato, as well as raki and melon to end. Good choice on the menu. For 2 mains and wine, you will pay about 20 euro - great value.

“Highly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

Excellent taverna with produce from family gardens - which one can walk through on the way to the beach. Amazing quality of fruit and veg - apparently due to the eco system there.

“A must of a restaurant in a must of a location on Crete, Kato Zakros”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2012

We, my wife and I, have been going to Kato Zakros since 2007 and whenever we have been there the Platanakis Taverna/Restaurant has been our favourite for eating out. That is saying nothing against the other tavernas there, because we have eaten at each one more than ones and each has its attractions.
Nikos' place is the stand-out one though, because the food - usually with freebies thrown in - have invariably been great. Home grown organic vegetables, fish and meat dishes that are just that little bit different are coupled with the super friendly service from the lovely Carmen makes us return time and time again.

In short: completely recommended!

“Fresh ingredients,seaside seating and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

I intended to write this sooner but mislaid the card.We walked the gorge from the top village Ano Zakros, a wonderful walk, then arrived at the bay. we walked through a vegetable garden to the sea and found the owner of tthe garden presiding over a friendly but well run taverna.. Our food was good but perhaps the more striking memory is that the daughter of the house encouraged us to see the ruins of Zakros Palace and come back for the next course. So we did. it felt good to be trusted.
Like many Greek businesses this is a family concern and I have included a picture of the father playing a traditional bagpipe.
I note that the only other review was in Italian but they also spoke perfect English..They organised a taxi for us back to our car. This wasan essential part of our "best day".
