“Miao Village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

We purchased the Groupon voucher for this family trip comprising of grandparents, parents, and grandchildren. Beware of those additional which your guide asked you to pay. If you find that there is no value or not worth, dont join nor pay. We are asked to pay RMB650 to visit few places and some meals, which we did not complies all. We join for those we find worthwhile. We paid about SGD30 per person to enter Miao Village. Any meals on your own will be much delicious and money-worth than what the guide brings you.

Talking about Miao, there is this unique and fun culture whereby Miao people make fun of you by using their buttock to knock onto yours, you have to be sponteneous though.

During this visit, we learnt that it is mandatory for Miao men to learn the skill to make a beautiful crown for their future wife. The bigger and gorgeous the crown, the better and glamorous is the bride. As for Miao women, they learn the black magic which some women will make it for their newly wed husband to drink. In the event, husband stays faithful, such black magic will not harm the men.

They sells fresh coconuts which is good to have in such hot weather.

The weather is hot in Hainana and not much wind, unless you at the beach. Feel it is hotter than Singapore. Majority of hotel's lobby and famous places of interest does not offers aircon. Nevertheless, we are glad no rainy weather during our trip in mid June 2012.

“A bad idea to go here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2012

This was mainly an extended shopping trip with a guide taking you around to buy ethnic trinkets. A couple very, very loud shows were thrown in along the way. Another reviewer said "bring earplugs" and I agree with that. I had to tear up some tissue and stuff it in my ears.

All in all a wretched place with a few redeeming acts. To be fair, I've already seen a lot of these things done similarly but better in Yunnan.

“Bring earplugs!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2012

I knew from reading reviews that this would be somewhat Disneyesque but it was the only way I would get a glips into the Li and Miao minority people. The show was absolutely deafening and even with my fingers in my ears it was almost unbearable so you are warned. The sound quality was appalling. The English translation of what was going on was blocked behind a large pillar from my bench. All the costumes were wonderful, the silver necklaces, the baskets on each girls hip carrying bottled water. We had a thimble of their homemade rice wine and it was nice. Their embroidery is beautiful and reminds me a little of San Blas Islands off Panama but more in color than in subject. The experience would have been a much nicer if it hadn't been for the volume of every guides microphone, the unbearably loud show and so many other darned tourists!

“Full of fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2011

We visited the village in a group of 6 friends and were amazed by the display of culture by the stage dance and the other mini activities.

The dance was very entertaining. Picking the coconut from the tree by a man with bare legs and hands was exciting.

We also got some complimentary beetle nut neck pieces when we participated in fun activities.
The village has a section where the traditional Chinese wedding is demonstrated. (just for fun :))

There is a small museum which has handicrafts from old times.

There is a grappling activity which is great. Once can get a picture clicked by a professional photographer while grappling and can be bought at 10 RMB.
There are motor carts which can be hopped on if one is tired on foot roaming around. There are stalls to taste yummy chinese local snacks and buy handicrafts. Prices were reasonable.

All in all good fun for friends and family.
