“A quiet week away from it all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

Just spent a week in Skala Kalloni at Aegeon Hotel.
Hotel itself is small but rooms are spacious with big balconies. Big plus is a full size fridge in the rooms, Ideal for us. We were able to stock up with food and drinks for lunchtimes on the balcony in the sunshine.
Although there are plenty of sunbeds around the pool, foam matresses were in short supply.
Note to Hotel management - please ensure every bed has a matress to go with it. It saves people trying to pinch off other peoples beds as happened to me when I nipped to my room even though I left behind my belongings!
Staff work very hard to keep the hotel clean.
Breakfast is varied and plentiful - juices, ham, cheese, eggs, bread, cakes, hot drinks. You do not go short.
The area is very quiet and you rarely hear any cars on the road by the hotel. The only noise is the tweeting of the birds and the sheep being herded along the road with their neck bells ringing which was lovely to wake up to.
A 10 minute walk from the hotel brings you to the village square with a couple of mini markets and restaurants. You can always find something to eat from a pizza to a greek speciality.
Down side is the number of stray cats and dogs around when you are trying to eat. This is not helped by the number of idiots who encourage them by feeding them food scraps.
PLEASE NOTE - RESTAURANTS ARE FOR PEOPLE NOT ANIMALS!
Only real disappointment was the manager of the hotel who was not very interactive with guests. Even on the last day he was not around to see people off. At other hotels in the area during airport pick up, the staff were around to see people onto the coach. It would have been nice if the manager of Aegeon Hotel had done the same.

We recently spent a week in this hotel for a birdwatching holiday on Lesvos. At first the rooms seemed very rustic, but were kept very clean and with plenty of hot water and toiletries. We had a lovely little patio with ample space to sit in the sun amidst the delightful greenery. Nightingales woke us each morning, and the hotel is in an ideal position with bird watching across the pools from right outside the door! Black winged Stilts, and a plethora of other waders greeted us each day. A short walk along a road, lined with Crested Lark and Corn Buntings, and in the direction of the bridge gave us views of Black Stork and even Collared Pratincole! We ate in the hotel most evenings, with the exception of one occasion when the food ran short and we had to go into the village, which we repeated the next evening too. It is good to spread your custom around the various tavernas as well. Breakfasts were fine, plenty of choice with eggs cooked each day in a different way. The evening meals were great too, but you have to be in the restaurant in good time because other diners fill their plates and most eat two or three different main meals! The family that run the hotel are very nice, but George deserves a special mention as he was so kind and helpful. His cocktails are splendid and the hotel serves great Ouzo! All in all a great stay, good value for money, and we cannot wait to return!!

Just returned from an exceedingly hot and sticky week in picturesque Skala Kallonis and the oasis of peace and calm that is the Hotel Aegeon. Run by what appears to be several generations of the same family our experience of the Aegeon was far superior to the average 3*.
We stayed on a B&B basis and breakfast was excellent, served between 8.00 and 10.00 so plenty of opportunity to have a lie-in!
Our room (106) was in pole position at the corner of the building with views from the ample balcony (free washing line and pegs) over fields, gardens and the sea, and no passers-by The room was large with two 3' beds pushed together, two chairs, bedside tables/lamps, a coffee table, dressing table and huge wardrobe with the hotel's own matching hangers, and the A/C was free! By Greek standards (sorry Greece) the bathroom was wonderful - plenty of hooks, proper towels, a shower that didn't cascade all over the floor and plumbing that worked a treat!!! The lovely cleaning lady kept the place spotless.
I imagine that this is a "year-round" hotel because the hotel's reception, dining, bar and lounge areas are so large and comfortable. Outside is a small bar, lovely shaded seating area which is also used for breakfast and a lovely pool area, all of which are surrounded by beautifully-kept lawns and flower beds. The pool doesn't have a particularly "shallow end" (1.6m I think) but since there was only one family with small children it didn't appear to be a problem. Plenty of sun beds and shades (although a few more sun-bed cushions would be great) and the pool is cleaned and maintained every morning.
The hotel is just a 10 minute stroll from the beach (and restaurants/tavernas) that runs all the way into and beyond Skala Kallonis. At first glance the immediate surroundings appear to be a bit sparse but the "flat-lands" are just the dried-out "wetlands" that bring all the bird-watchers to the island in spring. Further afield the wooded hills made a spectacular back-drop.
There are lots of "independant" cats and dogs in the area of Skala (the hotel has 2 dogs and puppy and 1 cat and kittens) but they were never a problem, all they want is to lie in the shade, usually under a sun-bed on the beach. They were never aggressive towards us and although one or two would appear at mealtimes they would wander off if ignored.
Skala Kallonis is a lovely little fishing village with harbour, fishing boats, village square (which is cordoned off from traffic in the evening) and several excellent restaurants and tavernas.
And the icing on the cake was the Hotel Aegeon. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: First floor gets the best of the breeze. 106 has the best views and no passers by.

Went for a week of peace and quiet and got exactly that. Stayed at the end of June and couldn't have chosen a more friendlier Hotel. Nothing was too much trouble. Booked half board and I must admit the first night's evening meal took me by surprise. I stay in a lot of hotels and am used to a choice of food on the menu, having dinner served without a choice did concern me, but not for long. The food was excellent and throughout the week we had different dishes each night so no problem. Only thing if you do have any foods you don't like tell them and they will adjust to suit you. George is a mine of information and always good company but all the family are really nice. Would definitely go again.

We stayed for a fortnight at the Aegeon to explore the island for its birds and wildflowers . It's well located with some good sites close by, and reasonable access to most other parts of the island, within an hours drive. It is just to the west of Skala Kallonis but within easy walking distance of the village and its many tavernas. We found our room clean and comfortable, with no noise from the road or village, and equipped with air conditioning and fridge. Each room has a balcony/seating area though some have restricted views - ours had a lovely view of the garden and coast beyond. Each morning, we woke to the sound of nightingale, Cetti's warbler and black-headed bunting! Breakfast was buffet style, with the usual range of juice, cereals, bread, cheese and ham, and eggs (omlette, fried and boiled in a three-day rotation) and cake! You have the option of being able to dine inside or out, with or without shade. A family run hotel, we found everyone helpful, and George especially so. The evening buffet at €12 was very good value - a traditional three course Greek meal, with Greek salad and or soup; then a main course with usually two of rice, pasta or potato; and two meat based dishes such as moussaka, meatballs, chicken pieces, lamb stew and at least one vegetarian such as stuffed vegetables, butter bean stew, followed by a sweet of cake or baklava. There was free internet access and an immaculately kept pool.
All in all, we were pleased with our choice and would be happy to return.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room overlooking the garden/sea to get a good view.

Stayed august 2012 very clean hotel breakfast was very good with a bit of variety. Hotel staff very helpfull especially george who is very knowlegable. Rooms are clean and maid service daily. As far as a problem with dogs we did not have one there where quite a few about but if you did not feed or pet them they would not bother you. Just like any other greek resort. The resort was about 15mins walk and was very peaceful. Beach less than 5mins with beds available for hire. Would recomend and stay again. The flight home was delayed for about 12hrs but believe me it was worth it as we just went onto beach and then taken to a hotel for a meal at there taverna. Second time in lesvos and not the last.

We spent a fortnight at the Aegeon on a birdwatching holiday early May 2012. It's probably the 12th time we've been to the island and perhaps the 5th or 6th time at this hotel. We wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. The family who own the hotel are so welcoming and friendly. We have usually come on a package tour but I ask for a room on a certain balcony and they have always obliged.

The rooms are kept spotlessly clean and the breakfast is taken on the terrace, weather permitting. This sets us up for half of the day.

We haven't noticed a stray dog problem but we are always there very early in the season. There are dogs and cats that frequent tavernas down by the harbour and just one cat that talked to us on the hotel terrace each morning.

Room Tip: All rooms have sun from early-mid pm onwards.
