We had a great week here. The location is superb looking across the strait to Turkey, and the pools are excellent - it felt like a mini-aqualand but without the crowds!
They have a decent shuttle bus into the local town which is a real delight - but we liked the tranquility of the location too
The beach is small but at least there is a beach - we travelled the island a bit and beaches are not the reason to come here - but if you want a relatively unspolit Greek island experience this is the right destination
All inclusive buffet food got a bit monotonous after a week but it was perfectly acceptable

Let's start with Molyvos (Mithyimna) - what a true gem on a greek island, totally unspoilt and showing visitors traditional greek styling. Sunsets we can only dream about, lovely friendly island people who genuinely want to make you feel welcome on their island.

The Hotel
The Alkaios is set on a hill approximately 2kms from Molyvos. A small, family owned (although family not on site) 72 room property, with 4 stars which is a little dated perhaps, but rooms were clean and adequate.

ROOMS
Large room, AC works well, although the bathroom in our friends room was totally unacceptable as it was too small to bathe in and if you tried to have a traditional shower the bathroom flooded !!! .Our friends therefore had to bend over the small bath to wash hair etc and then sit it the small bath with knees up to their chins - which is not really acceptable.

We were offered a suite which had a bedroom/en-suite with a jacuzzi bath, and the added bonus of a lounge area with plenty of storage facilities and two sofas. There was no kettle/cups in the room but upon asking the receptionist we were quickly provided with these in both rooms. Both rooms had fridges, tvs and DVD plyers. The balconies overlooked the sea and the view across to Turkey. Rooms were cleaned daily and beds changed twice during the week and we also had fresh towels daily.

FOOD/DRINK
'All-inclusive' drink information was carefully worded and this was red/white wine, carbonated drinks (local brand), ouzo, local draft lager, tea/coffee/water only (charge for bottled water of one euro) and any other alcoholic drinks were chargeable.

Breakfast - choice of cold meats/cheeses, greek yoghurt (which was 'thinned down'), toast/jams/honey and 'hot' buffet of fried/scrambled eggs, bacon, boiled eggs

Lunch - Salads (same everyday), chicken, pork, lamb, beef in different formats, chips/scallop potatoes/rice and deserts of coconut cake (until it ran out) walnut cake and orange or apple

Evening Meal - Soup/Salad (same as lunch!!), chicken, lamb, pork, beef in different formats (same as lunch) chips/scallop potatoes/rice and deserts of coconut cake (until it ran out) walnut cake and orange or apple

You may see a repetition on the menu ....... yep that is what it was, every day the same things just in a slightly different format.

We do not go to Greece to be offered chips at every meal and not even hot chips for that matter !! The food really let this hotel down. Mostly the food was tepid, not hot !!! They did not seem to have the facilities/systems to keep any of the food hot. We spoke with the rep who was very helpful and spoke to management but sadly this had no effect and possibly made things worse, as after that every time we went to collect some food, the chef started turning over the food in the bain-maries !!!!!!!

POOL AREAS/POOL BAR
The hotel has 2 lovely main pool areas a high level and a low level, both overlooking a small strip of beach which has considerable amounts of seaweed. The pool areas were clean and the pool bar (top pool) served all the drinks on the all inclusive list, along with good quality ice creams in various flavours (not just for children) which was great. Victor at the pool bar was both friendly and knowledgeable and told us of nice places to eat in the town for our nights out.

Stephanos (Victor's brother) served us in the lobby bar in the evenings and again was both pleasant and knowledgeable about the local area.

FREE SHUTTLE BUS TO MOLYVOS
The hotel offer this 4 times daily and this is really useful as it is slightly too far to walk into the town.

To sum up, this COULD be a great all inclusive hotel if they could offer hot food and did not skimp on supplies. We know it was the last but one week of the season, but surely the customers should still be offered a fair choice of foods right up until the end of the season. I feel sure if the owner was offered less than this on his vacation, he would be rather unimpressed ! Maybe as the hotel moves to B & B next season customers will get what they pay for ?

We enjoyed our holiday, but the edge was taken off because of the particular aspects mentioned above.

What made this Hotel for us was its pools and the two kids play areas. Just fantastic. Do not come to this resort of you want a beach holiday...the beach is rocky both in and out. You would definitely need to wear beach shoes. Had two interconnecting rooms on the first floor with a lovely outlook of the pool area and Turkey in the distance. Rooms were immaculately clean but old fashioned. A kettle was in the rooms but no cups or tea/coffee/sugar/milk. WIFI was included in our price but it wasn't working at our end of the corridor, so we would only access it in the public areas. Hotel staff were friendly and chatty. Great buffet breakfast, the outdoor terrace is just beautiful. Hotel is situated about 2kms out of Molyvos, so you really do need a car or take advantage of the hotel shuttle service or get a taxi. If ordering soft drink, you get it in a glass, so they can use a cheaper brand of soft drink (which tastes awful) they really should use the proper brands. But Molyvos itself was fantastic! One the most beautiful towns in Greece. Will definitely visit there again.

Located just around 2kms from Mithimna with its spectacular sea bay and remarkable castle located above, the Alkaios Hotel is one of the biggest hotel facilities in this corner of Lesvos island. Hotel is located a bit remotely from Mithimna but easily accessible either by foot (20mins) or by car. However, you can also use a hotel shuttle going from/to Mithimna several times a day. Hotel is placed at the seashore with impressive view of the Hawaiian-style sea cliffs nearby and sea canal (width approx. 12kms) with the Turkey coastline clearly visible on the horizon. Hotel has two outdoor polls with small wet bar, beautiful garden, large dining deck, kid corner, spa and very small private non-organized beach. The dining deck is absolutely spectacular, especially during dinner time. Hotel is not pretty new but in good condition.
There was all inclusive service for everyone. It included also basic services provided down at the pool bar with local bear, ouzo, water and ice cream. The kitchen did its work pretty well but slightly behind our expectations. Local wines distributed from bigger galloons only. Nice people serving drinks at the both bars (pool bar and dinner lounge) every night.
Just average room quality and room service, nothing extremely fabulous but appropriate with what we expected. Free Wi-Fi access with fast Internet reachable at almost all the places of the hotel including guest rooms. As expected, we had to fight with a lot of mosquitoes in the room every night, and again I have no clue why this hotel does not use kind of mosquito netting that could prevent the insect flying into rooms. It is easy – I do not want to use A/C but leave windows opened all the night…
Must admit we were a bit disappointed while going into sea. There was much poorer sea life comparing to Ionian Sea around Zakynthos. Finally, we spent most of our hotel time next to well maintained upper pool where water was not salty but slightly warmer than sea (not bad!) and all compensated by the pool bar reachable by very few steps...
Planning to go around the island in rental car, I recommend to manage all the rental arrangements prior to visit using computer as this could save a remarkable amount of money even dealing with more expensive agencies such as AVIS which has its agency office in Mithimna. Pay attention to where you going with your rental as you can easily enter a very rough road with big edgy stones on which SUVs would have a lot of problems but still indicated as an ordinary 1st class road at the map provided by rental agency. Island is pretty large comparing to most of others and you will need at least three days to explore it entirely. Definitively, go to famous Skala Eresou and enjoy a lot of restaurants on wonderful west coastline. Visit also Mitilini - the biggest city on island and nearby beaches close to the airport on southeast corner.
I do recommend this place if you want to spend a quiet time for reasonable price including AI service. If you even want to spend some time at genuine Greek neighbourhood with sort of a island night life, go to Mithimna and simply have your dinner and drink at one of the restaurants just below the castle walls jumping back easily using the hotel shuttle. After all, comparing to Zakynthos where we have been a year ago, we found Lesvos not as fancy as we expected but presenting more of Greek spirit and true authenticity.

Room Tip: Go upstairs! Spectacular view from sea-front rooms!

Excellent hotel for families with children. The pools are fine but the "beach" is not the one where Di Caprio went. It is only an entry to the sea. The service is good but we did not have really the opportunity to check them in pressure. For sure are very friendly and helpless. Awful breakfast, which tries to look good, but the quality of the food is almost the worst possible (except of the Feta and the olives). We can not expect in this category something better in "The all-inclusive age". Pool bar has the same problem. Cola from "Lidl" and house wine....have a beer! We did not have lunch or diner. The location is good but you will need a car or a bike to move around.
The room is fair and offers the principal. And also its better in the reality than at the photos.
If you get a bargain take it, but never pay the official price!

Room Tip: Nice view and silence for the sea view rooms.

Alkaios is a average hotel by the seaside but unfortunately they dont use this advantage. They have 3 big pools bbut nothing by the beach. Only few sunbeds and umbrereallas which looks very dirty. They didnt change my beddings for 4 days but they change towels if i put one on the floor. Breakfast is ok nothing great , fetta cheese, olives , tomotoes and some hot stuff. We got a room for 60 Euro which is good price for august. If you wanna got to Molivos, you need a car or take a taxi for 5 Euro.

Room Tip: Take a room with seaview

Eftalau, Molyvos. Hotel Alkaios. WOW.
I ordered a vacation based on the travelagent saying that it was a nice place.... I read some of the reviews here on tripadvisor, and had my doubts. But those old reviews are old, and things are happening.
When we arrived with the bus late evening sunday, we where well taken care of by the staff expecting us. Tammy the GM was even so kind to carry my wifes bag to our room. In the reception area you find will Tammy and Joanne and a couple more, they will do almost anything for you to make you feel good at your stay. That was my personal experience. But I also asked nice, and nice questions might get you nice answers.
In the poolbar we had your barman George, when my wife an I played backgammon, he came, looked at our game, shaked his head and sighed ( I know I play bad ) so he layed out the start for a cosy relaxing bar experience. Thanks George for the many ouzo's.
At the indoor bar we ran into Stephané, who served us coffee and a lot of ouzo too. He always look at you with a smile on his face and he's a joy to talk to.
The food at the hotel is good, we had all inclusive, the meals is served as buffet, American breakfast in the morning, for lunch there were some warm dishes and cold, for dinner there always were at least 5 or 6 hot dishes, bread, and salatbar. There was alway the posibility to eat differently everyday, so you didn't have to eat the same (unless you like some particulary good) the meat was so tender that a knife almost never was needed. Thanks to the kitchen / waiter staff, good job.
The cleaning staff was very polite and we didn't have any problems with towels and stuff missing.
Cleaning of the pools and pool area was done every morning, nice clean pools by the way.
We never used the spa area as we did have enough in the 4 swimmingpools the hotel have, beside the spa area.

Would we visit the hotel again ? The answer is yes. Do we recommend it, oh yes we do.

Now at last in this review I would like to say THANK YOU to all the staff at Hotel Alkaios for a wonderfull vacation.

Room Tip: Room 212 was a nice room with a nice view. The 200 series are the rooms at the top on one of the hot...
