“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2009

We arrived home on 15 July after a 2 week stay and very sad and depressing it was - not even the thought of my lovely comfy bed could make up for leaving this beautiful Island and these lovely apartments...

We have been to the Island before and were returning to holiday with friends and to get married... we were not disappointed.. Skiathos has a charm like no other Greek island - it is so small but every time you go there is more to see and do. The people here have a warmth and friendliness you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. I cannot recommend the Island enough...

We were staying at the Myrtia partly because of the reviews here but also as we needed to be near Aghia Eleni beach - we were intending to have our reception there... I was initially worried as we have recently been holidaying at 9 Muses in Kefalonia (see their reviews and you'll know what I mean!) where the standard is outstanding... However, any doubts I may have had were pushed aside when I saw the beautiful location and surroundings of the Myrtia - you are told by Vlatco when you arrive that there are other more luxurious places to stay on the Island but you will not find anywhere that has the atmosphere and friendliness of the Myrtia and its staff. ... I think he was right...

Due to the heat - 41 degrees - when we married and a leg injury to one of our party we decided not to have our reception at Eleni but to stay at the Myrtia - Spiros, Christos and Mike did an amazing job and even made a cake - it was a lovely lovely evening so thank you to them...

The Island seemed busier than in previous years but you can still find quieter beaches if you look - Eleni is my favourite and has amazing sunsets - we went there for a second 'reception' the day after the wedding and had a fantastic evening.. Mandraki (both of them) are still lovely and the changes to Abelakia are stunning! I found Koukounaries and Banana to be too busy but that is just my opinion...

The pool at the Myrtia is lovely and large and there are plenty of beds - although I noticed in the second week they filled up pretty quickly so I imagine it will be pretty busy in August....so get out there early! Thankfully there were very few people who employed the germanic tradition of 'claiming' a bed before sun up.... but there were one or two!

The food here is great - Christos has no idea about portion control and the meals were huge - great value for money!... He even made vegetarian mousaka for my friend and it's not on the menu.. Spiros is a gem - there is nothing that is too much trouble for him and genuinely cares that you are having a good time. Great bloke!

The walk up the track takes 7 minutes (we are that sad that we timed ourselves!) - took a torch a couple of times but once you get used to it you don't need one.. the walk to Koukounaries marina is another 5 minutes (ditto with the timing!) but is an undulating road - I liked the long walk to the main car park at the end of the road - 15 minutes - its flat!

Its a little further to Abelakia, Eleni and Banana but not much.. Too lazy to walk to Mandraki but is only 5 mins in the car and is worth a visit... Didn't use the bus service - but my daughter did and loved it.. Skiathos town is a must - great places to eat and drink (especially if you go in happy hour which in some places goes on until 10.30!)

The Myrtia was a lovely base for a holiday and yes the rooms are dated and basic but they are more than adequate and they are all quite large.. If you need more towels sheets pillows hairdryers etc all you need do is ask .. They do warn you when you arrive about the tiles around the pool (apparently they were ordered from Italy but were the wrong type) as they are slippery when wet, and they put signs up through the day to remind you!... No major accidents while we were there!

Would advise you take tea coffee sugar and cereal as these basics are quite pricey in the supermarkets but if you're like me you probably would anyway!...

We're all going back next year - can't wait!

We arrived back from a week in the Myrtia Apartments on Wednesday 8th July. Had an amazing time there and thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Skiathos island. The island is a real paradise and the beaches are wonderful. The Myrtia appartments is a very nice place to stay, the rooms were clean and well cared for, the maid service was brilliant. The pool is well looked after and very inviting on arrival!!! Spiros and Mary are true hosts in the bar/restaurant, nothing was too much trouble for them. Thomas Cook reps also were very helpful and again were always around for any help and advice needed. We highly recommend a stay on Skiathos if you are not a nervous flyer, the landing is an adventure on its own!!!!! not too mention taking off!!!!. A stay at the Myrtia appartments is very much recommended it is a very relaxing environment and we totally chilled out within our first day.

we have just returned from the myrtia in koukounaries on the island of skiathos.its a fantastic island. after an exciting landing , you get on the bus, and its not long before you get dropped off at the top of the lane in koukounaries . you will be offered a lift down to the apartments ,but if i was you take the walk.we loved that walk down to the myrtia , and did it pretty much every day .if you like nature and trees and just peace and quite then this is the place for you. rooms basic but clean. the maid service is excellent.the pool is superb .we ate at the restaurant every day, the food is very good and spiros and mary looked after us so well .koukounaries is lovely ,well stocked shop ,beautiful beach can get busy ,there are other beaches within walking distance.the bus to skiathos town is an experience they get you on no matter what .we enjoyed our holiday so much and would return ,we felt the location was ideal for children and grandparents alike ,no traffic to worry about . liked everything disliked nothing

Just back from a fortnight at the Myrtia Appartments and glad to report that they are still a real gem (see other reviews) not a 5 star hotel but a very friendly and helpful, quiet and safe place to stay. The furniture may not be the highest quality but it is clean and serviceable and great value for money. The real strength lies in the food, the safety (no traffic for families to worry about - 5 minute walk along a flint track to the road and nestled in trees) and most of all the excellent staff (which assisted greatly whilst i was ill - see below).

Recommend using Mustang Car Rentals 25 Euros a day for a Jimny (half the price of those recomended by the agents and a local/Skiathos business - [--].

Best food experience (atmosphere, quality and cost) is the Taverna Alexandros run by Magda, her husband and team (as is Mustang Car Rental) and will give you an evening to cherish (with live music and the perfect location and atmosphere).

Required medical help and received great and inexpensive assistance (Dr came to appartment for 30 Euros) from Dr Sotris Michalitsis [--].

Best watersports (Skiing, Wakeboards and all the usual inflatables plus the only windsurf board on the island !) Stefanos Ski School at Vassilias Beach (bus stop no.8) www.stefanosskischool.com (and he makes the best Frappe on the island) Taught me to windsurf and is probably the cheapest and most highly qualified instructor.

Great setting surrounded by trees down a dirt track away from everything
5-10 min walk to beach also banana beach 15min walk
execellent food and bar staff
large pool
rooms are big as have a mezzanine level with two extra beds
the complex felt very safe for children
skiathos is a great island very pretty ,nice beaches, lovely people, lots of things to do

There are however some bad points, the rooms are tired and dated and in need of a makeover,we had a problem with ants and our room wasnt very clean. The sheets were old and so were the towels (all needed replaceing ) My daughters bed was full of ants the first night and my sheets on my bed were dirty which wasnt great when youve just arrived(after speaking to the rep this did all get sorted out right away, however we did have some ants running around still but we learnt to live with them) The bathroom again was old and needed a facelift,i feel if these things were done the apartments would be perfect ,the owner seems to be spending money on the outside prehaps he will start to renevate the apartments next?

The table tennis table was slighty broken and the bats had seen better days, there are tennis courts and you can borrow rackets and a ball from the bar.
One major problem was the pool area they have put down new tiles and these just seemed to be normal floor tiles so they were very slippey(9 children fell over in the first week!)so be carefull.
TIPS: take a plug , a torch, be aware you have to pay for aircon,if you hire a car get a jeep as if you want to go up the mountains the roads are all dirt tracks, there is one main road in skiathos and the bus service is execellent.

RESTAURANTS: you must go to GREEN PARK its bus stop 16 great food great bar,
the restaurants near the appartments are ok but the food at the myrtia was better.

WEATHER: we stayed 20th may-3rd june first week was great 2nd week was overcast with a bit of rain we did have the odd sunny day but it was abit dissapointing. At night it was freeezing take a fleece.

I would recommend this place but just be aware the accomadation is very basic you will have a good time skiathos is a lovely island.

My husband and I have just returned from our holiday at the Myrtia apartments. The previous reviews were very accurate and the bonus to the holiday was it was only 3 hours and 5 minutes to fly there. I would definitely suggest you take a torch as it was pitch black on some nights when we returned home after dark. It takes 5/6 minutes to walk but the track is uneven and very bumpy if you have a pushchair. The resort is nice and you can get quite a nice meal at the apartment. We ate at the ILIA'S ORCHARD taverna for the last four nights. The food and atmosphere was definitely Greek and what was on the menu was sometimes limited due to it being freshly cooked. The meals at the taverna were far cheaper than anywhere else and every night we were given a desert of Greek yogurt and home grown fruits. The food was unbelievable and the decor of the restaurant is something out of Shirley Valentine. You can find the restaurant if you turn right at the top of the track and walk towards the second Sky Sports bar. It is set back from the road but the path is well lit.
With respect of traveling to Greece or anywhere else in Europe be aware that the weak pound makes it an expensive holiday. A can of pop was 2 Euros ( 2 Quid) and a milk shake 6 Euros ( 6 Quid ) at the Myrtia but this was on par with everywhere else on the Island. The staff are very friendly and Andy the rep for Thomas Cook dealt with any concerns very diligently. If your luggage allowance permits, I would suggest young families to pack a few tins of tuna beans etc and cereal cos they a very expensive over there. Butter was 4 quid a tub. Although we didn't go on holiday to scrimp the cost of things in the shops had everyone moaning. Be prepared for it and it won't spoil your holiday.
All in all we had a fab time and met some really friendly people. Would I go back ? Maybe but not yet cos with the weak pound I think it will have to be Turkey or Egypt next. What a shame.

We have just returned from Skiathos and had a lovely stay at the Myrtia Apartments. No complaints at all, we cannot fault the accomodation, area or staff. A nice big pool and lots of sunbeds (this is the first holiday I've had where I've not had to fight for a sunbed). The apartments were very spacious with a big bathroom and balcony with a picturesque view, probably the cleanest we've had in greece. Loads of books to choose from left by other holidaymakers if you want a good read. We ate at the Myrtia nearly every night as we found it had the best food!! Spiros the bar owner looked after us and best bar is La bussola, next to the supermarket.

Very peaceful surroundings in a Pine Forest (except for noisy crickets) and the main road with supermarkets, car hire, bars and restaurants is 5 mins walk. The lane to the main road only takes 5 minutes and is through the forest. It does get dark at night but we didn't bother with a torch, choosing to let the moon and many stars guide us home after a few sambucas.

The beach of Koukanaries (15 mins walk) is sandy with clear water and no pebbles and our favourite on the island (we went to 13 in total), although busy from daytrippers.

Only negative comments would be the wasps which bothered us all over Skiathos.

We would definately go back to the Myrtia!!

  • Liked — peaceful setting, food and staff
  • Disliked — wasps
