“Lovely Hotel let down by area and basement studios!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, bedding/towels changed every 2-3 days a bonus, onsite restaurant is excellent value with a good choice of traditional meals, pool snack bar does very basic snacks during the day.

Studio was as to be expected but very clean and well equiped and had a shower cubicle although very small bathroom. We booked a balcony and on arrival were quite shocked to be led to a studio that was not even on the ground floor it was down below in the basement .... we nick named them the dungeons. There are 4 on lower ground level and they all share a very tiny pation area which never gets any sun apart from a brief half hour at the end of the day which made drying the wet towels etc very difficult. We complained and asked to be moved but were informed the hotel was full and all the studios were on the lower level. We got used to it as it is really only somewhere to sleep but it was far from ideal. The pool area was always full with sunloungers and there was not really much space to spread out this didnt bother us as we always go to the beach.

The resort is very quiet and the beaches with sunloungers on are mucky they dont seem to clean them. There is just one road with very little there the ambrosia taverna is excellent and well worth the visit. We explored the local area and there are lots of busier places in the vacinity. We enjoyed our holiday but will not be returning especially after the horrific departure lounge at crete airport, way to busy boiling hot and distinct lack of ladies loos (hubby said the mens floor was awash).

Room Tip: Dont book a studio unless you really have to and dont assume that if you book a balcony it will be g...

Found this hotel to be excellent. Rooms were large, kept exceptionaly clean and contained fridge, combi microwave grill oven and two ring hob. Basic but okay for knocking up simple lunches + brekkies. If you want to make Beef Wellington every night you're going to struggle!!

Bathroom is big enough with proper shower cubicle, mixer tap and hairdryer on wall. You're even given matching bath robes, never seen that in greek self catering before, nice touch!

All staff are exceptionally hard working from cleaners, bar + taverna staff, right up to management. All were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is directly under the flight path for flights into Iraklion airport and there is some noise but I have to say that after the first night I didn't notice them. It was actually quite nice sitting on the balcony in the sun watching them go over the bay and land.

On site Taverna had our custom almost every night we were there because it was such good food. Good choice, greek specialties excellent and reasonable value. Pastas, pizzas, greek food all 6 - 9 euro. Mixed grills, some fish and steaks 12 - 15. Half carafe house wine 3 + large draught beer 2.80 euro.

Now for the area, It may be the fault of the holiday companies misleading their customers but I honestly don't know what some people think they're going to see in Gournes but it's not for anyone who wont be happy with a quiet holiday!
Gournes shouldn't be called a resort. It is a small hamlet on the north coast of crete with a small coastal road running through it. Sea to the front, hills to the back and is typical of what a quiet greek hamlet looks like!! If you want sculptures, architectured paved streets, rows of bars and a huge choice of restaurants as well as being able to shop in large supermarkets then book accommodation in the towns or big tourist areas.
There are 4 cafe bars that all serve food of sorts, 3 tavernas, 2 shops which will stock your essentials, fresh bread, milk, cheese, meats, beer, water, wine etc. However, if you take a 15 minute stroll to the left you're in Kokini Hana which has loads of bars, tourist shops + a large "Spar" supermarket.

To sum up, very relaxing enjoyable holiday in very quiet coastal area in well run friendly hotel.

Apartment better than expected - Staff faultless, from Reception to Cleaners, all friendly, helpful and have a great attitude. Wonderful food in the Hotel's own Taverna, beautifully cooked. We only went for a week this year, but will certainly go back for a more detailed look at the whole Island. Never ventured further than a couple of kilometres from the hotel, but managed to find a couple of good, clean, sandy beaches to relax on. Avoided beaches with loungers, bought ourselves a parasol (a must for a little shade, even in late September). If you want busy, busy, busy, then DON'T go here!! Very quiet, not too much in the resort, but a few shops/cafes/tavernas available within a very short walk. All we needed and more, may hire a car next time.

Room Tip: Rooms right at the back will be quietest, and have the largest balconies.

The "resort" is pretty much an isolated, abandoned, ugly strip of land by the sea. There are 3 or 4 very simple bars or "restaurants" (ha ha), 2 "supermarkets" which are little more than small rooms selling overpriced goods. The hotel itself provides extremely basic accommodation, the self-catering facilities are simply two electric rings rammed onto a small worktop next to the sink, thoughtfully they provide you with a fantastic array of two drinking glasses among the scruffy cutlery items. Everything is expensive but maybe that is just a reflection of the national economy. Would I go back? Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Great complex, right on the seafront, sea views, and fantastic food with the most friendly staff.
We really enjoyed our stay. A special thanks to Irania, Irene and Yani for being great hosts. Couldn't be more friendly and accomodating. Thanks!

This was our first time in Crete & we will certainly be going back.

From the moment we landed, everything was just perfect. Firstly, it took only 60 minutes from touching down on the runway to opening the door to our apartment (not something I am used to!!)

The welcome when we arrived at Golden Bay was warm & genuine, we were shown to our room which was spotless & big enough for the 4 of us.

The friendliness of the staff, be they the cleaners, the waiters in the taverna or Stu & Pavlos at the poolside bar was something that was really refreshing, they seemed genuinely happy to help with anything they could & despite working rediculously long hours, they were always cheerful.

This friendly atmosphere seemed to rub off on all the guests as well & everyone seemed comfortable in each orthers company, again not something you see very often.

The complex is really the only thing in Gournes (virtually everything else seems to have closed down) but it is a perfect size (40 rooms) for everyone to know each other. Most guests seemed to stay around trhe pool most of the time & ate in the taverna each night.

We ate at the taverna each night & found the food to be of a good standard & reasonably priced (plenty of choice for all ages & nightly specials).

The Thompson rep, Mike was on hand virtually every day for any issues but I can honsestly say that I did not see anyone complain to him about anything (he obviously loves the place as well as he even spent his nights off having a drink & joining in with the entertainment). I can only say good things about him, happy to help & offer advice at all times.

We only did one trip which was to the water park but I would thoroughly recommend this as it was a fantastic day out for the whole family (tip - take your own food as you will save a fortune)

Previous review have said that the surrounding area is a bit scruffy & this is true but the Golden Bay cannot be held responsible for the economic problems that other places have obviously encountered. They are a shining example of a successful place that must benefit from large amounts of repeat custom.

I would have no hesitation in saying this was the most relaxing holiday I have had in years (even with 5 & 15 year old children) & I have absolutely no doubt that we will return in the near future.

Anyone thinking of going here, do it, you won't regret it!!
