“The spirit of unspoilt Portugal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Not so much a hotel as a small collection of self-contained holiday chalets, the facilities of which warrant nothing less than a five-star rating. A few minutes' walk from hot springs, a huge lake, immaculate public gardens and a characterful, largely unspoilt village, the best thing was the welcome from Louisa and Abel who made you feel as if they were actually inviting you into their own home. Superb and highly recommended.

Quinta da Mó is a hidden, secret place in Furnas, where everything was thoroughly thought and planned so that you can take the most out of your stay:

1. a warm welcome from Luisa and Valério, making you feel completely at home; always available either to have a conversation or a tea with you, to provide useful touristic, historical and cultural information, or simply to let you explore Quinta da Mó and Furnas by yourself (if privacy is what you’re looking for)

2. an idyllic place composed of:
a) an old mill and the main house where Luisa welcomes her guests with a tea and a warm conversation
b) 3 small houses decorated to a high standard, with all modern amenities and a small enjoyable terrace facing the gardens
c) a wonderful garden with exotic plants and a bamboo-lined pathway that leads to a small body of dammed water, a waterfall and the BBQ/”lounge” area
d) a barbecue and a “lounge” area, where you can enjoy the hammocks and relax at the background sound of the waterfall
e) an outdoor Jacuzzi (simply perfect on a rainy day!)

3. A welcome gift of local products. A wonderful way of promoting local products (local bread “bolo lêvedo”, jams, butter and yogurts, pineapple and other local fruits, milk, “goreana” tea, etc.). All products sourced from local producers and brands, and all of excellent quality.

In summary, a charming and relaxing place, perfect if serenity and privacy is what you’re looking for. Within walking distance from the main attractions at Furnas, a little bit further way from the remaining main attractions of São Miguel.
When planning your trip, give yourself sometime to relax and enjoy Quinta da Mó (in my case, I’ve only stayed a few days in São Miguel/Quinta da Mó, so I didn’t have enough time to enjoy the quietness and peacefulness of Quinta da Mó due to the busy sightseeing schedule).

Finally, I must confess it is remarkable the work that Luisa and Valério have been doing at Quinta da Mó. This several year endeavour where they have been progressively adding new amenities to the Quinta (from restoring the mill to building the BBQ and “lounge” area) is only possible when you put lots of passion and dedication into a project.

Will certainly return to Quinta da Mó.

To discover "Quinta da Mo" was on a par with discovering Aladdin's cave. You always hope that a holiday rental will live up to those expectations that were based on the description and photos of the property; but driving along the one-way approach road, lined with small houses, there were a few doubts. But when Luisa opened the blue double gates that led down to the four berth parking area, the "wow" factor really kicked in!.
This lovingly restored Mill is a triumph of good taste, quality, and thoughtfulness.Furnished to an impeccable standard, it provided the perfect base for this family of five to enjoy the next fourteen days. Within the extensive grounds, and discretely secluded from each other, are three holiday rentals based on a rustic cabin design. the gardens themselves encompass a rivulet (swift but shallow), and stretch some 200 odd metres along the valley bottom. Maintained to a high degree, they lead firstly to an outdoor hot tub/jacuzzi, then onto one of the best BBQ and alfresco dining areas we've yet experienced.
A further, and heart warming bonus )as if one were needed), were the owners, Luisa and "Valerio". Two of the nicest people you could wish to meet; they provided us with a rich insight into the culture of the Islands, much helpful advice, and their hospitable generosity was unstinting.
To those prospective holiday makers looking for quality, comfort, and impeccable house keeping standards, we cannot recommend "Quinta da Mo" too highly.

LOVED these fantastic, modern cabins with all the amenities you could ask for! Luisa and Abel were absolutely wonderful hosts, greeting us with warmth and care after a very long journey to the island. They provided an informative orientation to the area upon our arrival and helped us with anything we needed during the entire stay. We stayed for just two nights but wished we could have stayed longer! Best things about the Quinta da Mo are:
-Excellent location in Furnas: just a couple minutes walk to the amazing Poca da Beija (thermal pools on beautiful grounds for just 2 Euros for entry); Pools are open until 11 pm. Highly recommend visiting these pools in evening before a relaxing sleep.
-Delicious welcome basket upon arrival which included the locally made sweet bread (addicting!), Luisa’s homemade jams (the fig spread was THE best!), and some of fruit, yogurt, crackers and cheese! Such a great offering for breakfast and on the go snacks…
-Everything you could possibly need in the cabin with amenities including- fully stocked kitchen and bathroom, internet (ask for the modem), modern décor and appliances, lovely deck, and even comfy robes for lounging around.
-Amazingly beautiful grounds including a waterfall and babbling river, gorgeous hydrangeas and fruit tree gardens, and a sitting area with hammocks- real Japanese garden zen like feel to the place… (be aware of the many wild cackling roosters outside your window- loud in the morning, but they do add to the charm of the property!).

We highly recommend Quinta da Mo and would definitely return again! Thank you so much Luisa and Abel for a wonderful stay!

Quinta da Mo has to be one of the best kept secrets on San Miguel, Azores. We spent the first of our two weeks on San Miguel there before heading to Ponta Delgada. Nestled amongst the narrow, house-lined streets in Furnas is where you will find this gem. Behind the blue gates is where this little paradise is hidden. The well-appointed landscaping was impressive as every detail of the land was planned out with the utmost care. The waterfall and rolling stream on the property added to the level of calm and peacefulness. The glass wall on the cabin made you feel like you were a part of the natural surroundings. With only the three cabins and the main house on the property, there is guaranteed serenity and privacy. The accommodations were very modern and clean and we didn't lack any amenities. Awaiting us on arrival was even a wonderful gift of local bread and jams, fruit and teas. We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub and nice fluffy robes every day. Down beyond the bamboo-lined pathway we adored the gazebo and BBQ area. We even spent our last day in the gazebo by the waterfall swinging in the hammocks just reading and enjoying the tranquility instead of sightseeing. Our hosts, Luisa and Abel, did everything to make us feel like family and gave us good advice on what to do and see. They were even nice enough to have us over to the main house for some drinks and conversation before we had to leave and continue on to the second week of our trip in Ponta Delgada. The staff was wonderful as well. We cannot recommend Quinta da mo enough. If you want a relaxing place to stay on San Miguel, this is the place to be.

Quinta da Mó is as near as we have got, or expect to get, to the Garden of Eden. It represents an extraordinary amount of planning, effort and investment by Luisa and Valério, in a corner of the earth where nature has been extravagant.

Although the property is located on the edge of the town of Furnas, it shuts the town out to envelop the visitor in its own private world. The trees, birds, garden, stream and quiet retreats weave a magic that has to be experienced. A generous welcome pack includes fruit, home-made jams and local bread.

Sod's law is universal (even in Eden, as Adam and Eve discovered) and gremlins are everywhere active. We experienced a minor (TV) glitch that our hosts hastened to put right, even though we reassured them that it was of no concern to us.

Details of the accommodation are available on the property's website. I won't repeat the descriptions, nor the compliments that other visitors have paid although I certainly endorse them. I asked myself what our hosts might have overlooked in their efforts to make their guests comfortable and I'm still scratching my head.

The Quinta's advertised prices are not low, which is no surprise given what's on offer. We benefited from a spring promotion that represented great value for money. This is a very special place and if you are able to experience it for yourself, you may count yourself fortunate.

We stayed at Quinta da Mo for just 2 days at the end of our vacation in May on São Miguel. We wished we stay there in the beginning of our trip, because we would have change our plans and stayed a lot longer. The property was just perfect. Very private setting. It was relaxing going to sleep listening to water falls. The hosts were great. Like meeting up with old friends. If we go back to São Miguel, we won't stay anywhere else.
