“Great value for the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

We have stayed at the Riu Guarana for a week and it was a really nice experience. What I enjoyed the most was the staff, always helpful with a big welcoming smile. The hotel was booked out but I never felt a decline in service, always very helpful and prompt! Kudos for Nuno and Manuel at the bar, such nice barmen! The hotel was well maintained, spotless clean, with a little exception for the poolside bathrooms, but I guess that was to the fact of all the guest being wet using those facilities. The food was pretty abundant and fresh, it was not gourmet food and it could me a little bit more diversified, but was very decent in quality. I wished they had more Portuguese typical food, such as pastries and bread for the afternoon but overall it was pretty good. The oriental restaurant needs to step up on the sushi bar as it's very poor, but the rest of the food is really good. The only disappointed factors were the fact that the only access to the beach was through the Lobby, while there are unused gates in the back that would save us quite a long walk. I also wished they would have espresso coffee at breakfast... I seriously need my caffeine intake and I can't wait until 10am for the poolside bar to open. There were a few little things here and there totally annoying but that was not related to the Hotel quality, such as some guests poor manners and behavior! Other that I'd probably come back to Riu Guarana, at a least busy time of the year :)

Room Tip: 5th floor if you have kids, less noisy

This was a fantastic hotel, the staff were amazing and very helpful at all times.
Hotel was very clean, rooms were cleaned everyday, they even made animals out of our towels.
The pool bar is a must :-)
Food was fantastic, with a wide variety we were all never hungry.
Entertainment wasn't much cop but as there was 7 of us we made our own lol.
I would recommend this hotel.

This hotel was excellent . Food, service and staff could not be faulted. I thought with it being all inclusive and a large hotel it would not be up to the standard of other Riu hotels I had stayed in it surpassed them from the General Manager down to the entertainment staff they were just out to give you the best holiday. The standard of cleanliness was second to none and everyone from the cleaners upwards were so friendly.

Room Tip: A pool side room is great, good during the day but nice and peaceful in the evening

We stayed at the Riu Guarana late July/early August. We really enjoyed our time there.
The food was excellent, particularly the Asian restaurant which we visited three times during our 11 nights. It was lovely to be able to eat breakfast and dinner outside. We chose to eat lunch inside though as it was a bit too hot to eat outside during the middle of the day!
Agree with the other reviews that the evening entertainment could be better, but it's hard to cater for everyone's tastes and there were other nationalities at the hotel who like that kind of thing.
It was lovely to sit on the outside terrace in the evening drinking cocktails and enjoying the cool Algarve breeze.
We booked two adjoining bedrooms which was great as it gave us a lot of space. The beds were a bit hard, but there was no need for a mattress topper. Bathrooms were a good size and well equipped. Towels were rock hard though!
Didn't have a problem finding sunbeds, although we preferred to stay by the smaller pool which was less frantic and less noisy. The entertainment team worked hard during the day and the aqua aerobics was good fun.
Our rep, Henrique, was great. He knew his stuff and was very friendly and helpful. His quiz night in the Cabana bar was good fun.
We would definitely return to this hotel again.

Me and my husband spent a week at the Riu Guarana in August. On arrival we were greeted with a big smile and drink and were given our room key straight away. The hotel is easy to navigate your way round as they also give you a map so you know where everything is. We were on the 4th floor and the room was clean and spacious, the beds were very hard and we asked for a mattress topper, which only slightly helped. All the staff make you feel welcome and they work very hard to make your stay a happy one. We stayed all inclusive, the meals were ok but the highlight for us was the asian restaurant, we went to this twice and loved it. We felt it would have been nice to have a restaurant that was sit down with table/waiter service but they are all canteen style. The choice of drinks is ok but tasted a bit watered down.
It was my birthday while we were on holiday and the reception staff left a lovely bottle of fizz in the room, was a lovely surprise :-)

The only real thing that lets the hotel down is the entertainment it was really bad apart from the Sunday night when they had a duo who were good. We went a few excursions, one to Zoomarine, this was great, the dolphin and sealion shows are the best and was worth the money we paid. The second was a trip "a journey back in time" it took you to Silves and "the end of the world" I would not recommend this trip to anyone, it was a total rip off and the guide just wanted to talk about the recession, why everyone was leaving Portugal and the state of the economy, and believe me listening to that from about 10am till 5pm is not enjoyable! You also had to pay extra for any places you visited, we thought it would be included in the tour but it was not.
The beach at the hotel was nice, if not just a bit overcrowded, but if you walked along the shore long enough you could find a nice spot.
We managed to find a nice wee bar called "The Black Cat" to have a few drinks at night that played some easy listening music Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble etc and they have a live act on every week. The owner is a lovely guy, very friendly. We walked to Albuifera (old town) and it was well worth it, I would recommend anyone to go but if you dont fancy walking there and back you can get a bus or taxi.
Overall I enjoyed the holiday/hotel but not enough that I would go back again, it is more catered towards familys rather than couples that want to get away from it all.

Room Tip: We had room 410 that had a bit of a sea view

We stayed here for a week in Aug 2013, the outside of the hotel is very tidy.
The reception staff work very hard to get you checked in asap and they give you a nice chilled glass of oj. When we arrived in our room it wasnt the pool/sea view we payed for. The reception moved us straight away with no problem.
The room was very clean and looked good. The ac could be cooler but it was ok. The beds were lovely and hard, we enjoyed good nights sleep.
The first morning we met all the heads of departments which was a nice touch. It made you feel that they wanted to keep you happy. The hotel manager was always in and around the hotel so if you ever had a problem he wouldnt be hard to find.
The food here is excellent they have plenty of choice each day, yes its the same meat but it done in different ways. The grill and asian restaurant which you have booked are good additions to the whole eatery. The drinks are good, a decent choice. If they dont have one you want they will try to accommodate you.
We never had a problem getting a sunbed but we stayed round the smaller pool. They had beds free all day.
The evening entertainment was ok and fun to watch. Its not west end standards but what are you expecting ha ha.
Overall the hotel is excellent and we really enjoyed ourselves

Spotless with very polite staff only one small issue when my son was given a hard time for losing his wristband by a male member of reception. Nuno in the bar was brilliant.
Rooms: quietest I have ever stayed in, no slamming of doors. The worst bed I have ever had even with the mattress topper.
Air con could do with improvement.
Food: very good with lots of choice.
Swimming pools: a number of children that we got to know and both my sons ended up at the medical centre with ear infections costing 65 euros plus antibiotics, something that we have not experienced before. Sunbeds as usual are a joke why does a hotel never have enough beds and umbrellas. Witnessed a couple of very heated arguments after towels had been removed from beds. Sunbeds are very close together and it's not great when there are a lot of smokers.
Evening Entertainment: rubbish, everything is mimed apart from one outside act. They must be able to find someone who can bang out a tune. On one night the entertainment in the main venue consisted of 3 hours of the Germany v Paraguay friendly followed by a plate spinning and Hulu hoop act for 30 minutes. Not good enough!!!
Day time entertainment: aqua aerobics is very good(never thought I would ever say that). If you have little ones they are well looked after, but if they are over about 8 there is not much apart from poor football match, rifle shooting and water polo.
There is absolutely nothing for older kids in the evening , why not set up some video games etc and a place they can hang out. The entertainment staff are very friendly and are all able to speak to the many nationalities in there own language that stay here. Special thanks to Maria who is very funny.
Should be free wifi. Cocktail list could be better cant see why you can have tequila sunrise but not a Singapore sling
It's a good clean hotel but not so great that I would go back
