“Definitely doesn't deserve 4 stars”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

Although there was maybe only one other couple staying in the hotel,we were put in a room on the top floor and the lift wasn't working. There was NO offer of a room on the lower floor until late in the evening when we were already settled into the upper floor room. We had asked for a room with a view to the castle and were give one looking over the countryside - yes, it was beautiful but not what we had requested. We assumed none with a castle view were available when we checked in - wrong assumption on our behalf.
The towels were VERY WELL USED - edges frayed and grey in appearance.
There were four pillows - one was decent, the other 3 were like thin and hard.
The motion detector lights on the stairways and hallways didn't work so we had to find our way to our room in the dark.
A reading light by the sofa didn't work even when we tried it with a bulb from another lamp that did work.
We went to Portel and booked at Refugio da Vila to participate in their cooking school. We found out a few days before arriving that the cooking class on the day we were there didn't start until 19:30 which we thought was too late in the day for us to benefit from and enjoy.
Lastly,we decided to eat at the restaurant in the hotel - again, we thought if they run a cooking school the food would be at least good. It was truly the worse meal we have eaten during our 4 vacations in Portugal - each vacation was been for 6 weeks so we have eaten many enjoyable meals at other restaurants.
We would NOT recommend this hotel or restaurant to anyone.

We visited for ten days in October 2013. It is a very friendly, well appointed hotel in a beautiful, historic house. The restaurant offers a good selection of local dishes and there are several other restaurants within walking distance. We loved the O Chafariz cafe. Fight your way through the bar packed with locals to a simple dining room where you can see the chefs prepare your meal. The dishes of the day were excellent.
Some local tourist attractions were very poorly publicised and signposted, including a splendid new museum and shop focusing on local produce, such as cork, olive oil and cheese. The town also has two 'world championship' mini golf courses, but it took time to track them down.

We came in off-off season (4 January) so the restaurant was closed and the town was very quiet. The room was a good size and well presented with a view of the castle. The building itself was beautiful, with a large snooker room and beautifully decorated lounge with fireplace. A huge breakfast (included) was delivered to our room in the morning. The downside was no internet in the room and a very small old television. We visited the castle in the morning and had great views of the very pretty town, wished we had explored more the night before.

no Multibanco (do they accept only black money?) by a pre-fitted sign (so no accidental issue)
3 x a bottle of wine back during dinner, because of vinagre-taste, waiter agreed
15 min waiting for towels at swimming pool
cold eggs and bacon at breakfast/no replacements

This is a good hotel for the rural category. Rooms have a good size, comfortable but towels were not 100% clean. This was promptly solve by the staff. Cleanliness of the hotel could be better in same parts of the room and in the areas around the swimming pool. Breakfast is poor: it is ok to have little diversity but unacceptable to run out of food before the time limit.
Nonetheless, everyone is extremely kind and willing to make it an unforgettable experience.

The staff, cooking school, hotel, guided tours, food, countryside - all were fabulous. We attended the week-long cooking school at Refugio da Vila and had a wonderful experience. The accommodations and food were excellent, however, the friendly staff and locals made our stay exceptional. Sofia, the hostess and owner, Chef Pedro, Duarte, Sara, and Andrea were the best at making you feel welcome. The cooking school was superb and fun. Chef Pedro taught us a great deal about traditional Portuguese cuisine and Duarte taught us new skills in cocktail mixology. Sofia's background in history and as tour guide extraordinaire, made the experience complete. This is the place to go for an ultimate Portuguese experience!
