“Lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013 via mobile

Stayed at this hotel for 9 days at the beginning of July and thoroughly enjoyed it. Situated in the old Jewish Quarter, the oldest part of the hotel is 13th century with interesting roof arches. The hotel has been renovated to a high standard with colourful and modern decor which seems to work perfectly. The owners and staff are very friendly and couldn't be more helpful. A perfectly adequate continental breakfast is provided - boiled eggs, Serrano ham, a good selection of fruit, yoghurts and cheeses, and delicious croissants. The town itself is very historic, quaint and peaceful with a few good restaurants. Nearby Empuria Brava has a large selection of restaurants and bars if you feel like a 'livelier' night out.

We had no problem parking in the free parking area at the Flour Museum, which is a just few minutes walk from the hotel, though I imagine it will get busier in August.

On the whole, this is a lovely part of the Costa Brava, with Roses and Cadaques within a short drive. We would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to return next year.

This is a beautiful hotel that has been decorated and appears to have been recently upgraded to quite a hight standard with fabulous attention to detail. We had a lovely marble bathroom with our suite and downstairs the vaulted brick ceilings created a wonderful atmosphere. The staff were friendly yet professional and very helpful at all times. The breakfast included a nice variety of local produce and freshly baked breads and cakes. They have a vast library of DVDs that you can borrow and watch in English in your room which was a nice bonus. The pool area is very pretty and all well maintained. The hotel is situated centrally within the town which was pretty quiet during our stay in early July. It is a lovely place to base yourself and go touring. I would recommend dinner in the restaurant at the Cannet hotel which is a sister hotel. They do a great fixed price menu and their food is good. I would avoid the restaurant named El Portal de La Gallarda. It looks lovely as you walk by but the price and quality of service and food are very bad. We paid a lot for very little and some of the staff were very unprofessional. Overall I would highly recommend a stay at Hotel de la Moneda!!

We stay at Casa de la Moneda in the end of April, with 2 young kids (3 years old and 9 months). It was still quite cold and the city was empty, so we could calmly walk to the cosy restaurants and make friendship with the owners. The hotel is cosy and nice, without any luxury or fantastic stuffs, but the staff is very kind and helpful. Thanks Ms. Dolor, Luiza and all the staff of Casa de La Moneda.

Booked a junior suite for 2 nights in the middle of October, for a weekend in Catalunya. I stopped the car in front of the hotel, and was greeted by the manager, who guided me to the car park. At that time of year, it might not be necessary to book a parking space, but I can imagine that in busier months, it's quite convenient to have the car park under the hotel. The manager then took us to the room - which I loved immediately with the warm Mediterranean colours. A free bottle of the local sparkling wine was offered. Plenty of places to eat in Castello d'Empuries, which looks quite authentic compared to the horribly built up places that line the coast.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

We'd been on a week's cycling holiday in the area and had booked the Moneda online for a few nights relaxation after our ride before a few nights in Barcelona.

We stayed there on 13/14 August in a Junior Suite (Room 102). It was tastefully and beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean as indeed is the whole hotel. It only has 11 rooms and going by ours I would think the others are equally well decorated and comfortable.

Ours room had two huge beds, a Jacuzzi, digital TV with English channels and a great sun terrace. There's also a small swimming pool, loungers and tables and chairs. It's B&B but the buffet breakfast is great and well laid out.

Dolores, one of the owners, is extremely helpful and a lovely lady - any problems (and there won't be!) ask Dolores!

The town of Castello de Empuries is a beautiful place and even though we were there mid-August it didn't have that heaving mass of tourists seen elsewhere on the Costa Brava. It's non-commercialised and unspoilt and well kept which is a tribute to the town's governing body in this day of mass consumerism - unlike the seaside town of Roses which was awful and full of souvenir shops! This hotel and the town really is an oasis of tranquility and just what we needed after a week's cycling in the hot sun. It's ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside - there's a nature reserve close by and the town of Figueres that houses the Salvador Dali Museum. Sadly, we couldn't face the 1 hours plus queue/line of people for the museum, but if you want to get in fast-track I believe it's best to book online.

We saw that quite a number of people had hired bikes so it's a good way to get around outside the town. Within the town everywhere is walkable.

We loved the hotel and the town and highly recommend it for a long weekend or more. We flew into Barcelona (1hr 45 min from London) then 2 hours by train to Figueres and a 15 minutes taxi ride to Castello. However, if you can bear to suffer Ryanair it flies into Girona which is closer.

Stayed 2 nights in a Junior Suite (Room 204) while visiting the area hotel very comfortable staff amazing when trying to find hotel we got lost and ended up by the Basilica, so I walked to the hotel explained I was having difficulty driving there to drop off the bags. A member of staff then walked back to my car and sat in a and directed me to the hotel. took out the luggage and the came with me to the car park 200 mts away and that reflects the level of service this hotel provides. Breakfast provided are very fresh fruits, meat, cheese, etc. Each evening a turn down service was provided where the room/bathroom were tidied. Pool was a little small for serious swimmers(8 mts.) but the sitting area is quite large with plenty of loungers and chairs.
