“extremely dissapointed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

I am saddened to give this reveiw as i generally enjoy giving a good revie of my experinces on holidays.. First impression of hotel looked a bit drab, however once inside we were surprised with decor.. on arrival we were asked for 50 euro deposit for beach towels, however we declined to pay and glad we did as the quallty of these werent good and either had small holes or frayed at edges.. they had a greasy smell to them and they really need to be replaced. Our room looking onto the mountains was spacious and towels were changed every day, however the room the room never seemed to feel clean and no feeling of a fresh smell?..

Food.. please read the comments from previos review by fiddled. totally agree with ther comments and this was the most dissapointed thing about this hotel.. We complained to our rep on day 3 to see if there could be anything done withe the standard of food they were serving.. she had a word with the manager in my presence and I ende up having words with him. our first choice rep was completely useless . other holiday makers were very dissapointed. thomas cook rep had a word with the manager the day before we left and the food that evening was slightly better so it shows they can offer good food when they want!.. there were little niggles why tea/coffee machines were available at breakfast but were switched off at lunch and at dinner so we were unable to enjoy a coffee at dinner and had to go through to bar hall.. very strange.. now to the amenities.. I do not know if its lack of clarity by first choice or if its the hotel making there own rules on certain things.. 10am before outdoor pool opens, there is a lovely outside area upstairs but puzzled why this does not open till 1pm!.. drinks are of very poor quality and cocktails are part of inclusive at other 4stars but not here?..

entertainment was very cheesy andf the acts werent upt to much however the entertainments manager Jose was good and really put his heart into it and credit to him as he is wasted here. This hotel need a wake up call by the holiday companies and to seriously take our our issues onboard especially the food otherewise i don't see this and other issues improving until something is done.. we were looking for a lovely week away to enjoy some nice food etc but im afraid thats not what we got!..

Room Tip: mountain view.. rooms witha seaside view arew noisy as there right above the bar hall.

This was our second year coming to Arenas Del Mar and it was as great as ever.
On checking in we upgraded to a sea view suite as we were returning customers.
Staff are super friendly. Hotel is well specced with wifi available for free on the ground floor - can even be picked up poolside.
Food is varied and fresh - I'm a very fussy vegetarian and I can always find at least two options.
Pool area and spa are great. Being child free is a great bonus. El Medano is one of the less commercial towns - quiet and full of surfer types. Very chilled out and just a ten minute walk away.
Small shop on site has everything you need at non rip off prices.

Arenas Del Mar is advertised as a four or even five star hotel. The décor and rooms were of a good standard and the staff were friendly. However, the all-inclusive package was the worst ever encountered. .I can only describe it as diabolically poor.
The vast majority of food was below a 2 star standard. Sauces tasted as if made with packet mixes. The tomatoes on the salad bar were hard and unripe. Grilled meats and fish appeared to be the cheapest cuts and were very dry and tasteless. Leftovers from the previous day were obviously recycled and tasteless. Lunch and dinner buffets were virtually the same. Desserts were terrible. Mainly sponge cake, jelly, ice cream and angel delight type every evening with cold rice pudding twice. Fruit salad one evening was tinned. No proper dessert at all.
The food however was better than the drinks. The fruit juices tasted like watered down juice drinks. Tea and coffee was all from machines and not good quality.. . The beer was ok but the wine was really bad. . It was mainly on tap and the white and rose wine was horrible, as was the red in the restaurant. . Red wine from the bottle in the bar was just about drinkable. They would not sell single glasses of cava or other decent wines, only offering full bottles at 4 star prices. The wine list in the restaurant showed mediocre quality wines at expensive prices. The spirits were low quality and poor selection. The only slim line mixer available was Pepsi. No slim line tonic, ginger or soda water. 9 5% of our drinks (and some lunches) were therefore obtained at additional cost, outside of the hotel
Use of the indoor pool was charged at 18 euros per person, per session. The hotel is advertised as a NO CHILDREN hotel. But there were at least 8 children in the hotel over the Sunday night and they were running around the restaurant on Monday morning. Woken at 3am by a crying child in a nearby room
The hotels advertise that they will change currency etc. They refused to do so. Numerous guests were unhappy with the all-inclusive package

Room Tip: Due to the construction of the building, all rooms get the noise from the bar areas. Views of the mo...

We stayed for 5 nights just before Christmas to get some Winter sun.

Appearance
Form the outside the hotel looks awful. As you drive up to it it gets bigger and greyer. Don't panic. Inside it is actually very nice and also very well designed!

Location
Less than 15 minutes drive from the airport. The little town of El Medano is a ten minute very pretty walk along the coast from the hotel and has several bars, restaurants, a market, post office, some clothes shops, creperies etc. Also some nice beaches. There's a little beach right next to the hotel - out of the side gate and you are there.

Room
Junior Suite with a sea view - lovely room with twin beds, loads of storage, and a tv in a little sitting area. Good sized bathroom with clean towels every day. The balcony was a great sun trap in the mornings and a very handy built in clothes rack for drying things. Some noise from the bar and entertainment which is similarly at the back of the hotel but it didn't disturb us.

Food and drink
Buffet style in the restaurant on ground floor level. Serve yourself everything including drinks. Tea and coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine. Several large counters with salad, freshly cooked meat and fish, soups, cheese, cold meats, chips, pizza, paella, lots of very tempting desserts, fresh fruit and nightly specials. In the bar there is additionally spirits and cocktails (extra cost), also bottles of water. I'm vegetarian and had no problem finding enough to eat. There is also an a la carte restaurant on -1 but we didn't spot it until our last day. We enjoyed the generous measures of GIN (and tonic) in the bar!

Facilities
The salt water pool is lovely for cooling off, plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas around it and a glass pane separating the pool area from the sea takes the edge off the breeze which can get quite strong. The spa seemed nice but we didn't go in to use the facilities, as the weather was good we didn't need to. There is an extra cost to use the spa facilities (jacuzzi etc) which we were misled by when we booked so beware of this. A small gym on the top floor has weights and some exercise equipment. Although the treadmill was out of order we used the bikes, rowing machine, cross trainer. Cycles for hire at reception for ten euros a day were great for exploring El Medano (and if you're brave, Los Abrigos, we got there but it's 8km each way)

Entertainment
A daily programme of activities includes the usual; darts, pool, massage demonstration, Spanish classes.. quizzes and disco in the evenings. Jose the entertainment leader did a great job and was always around to chat. There are also excursions to places further afield if you fancy them.

General
Very well designed hotel with various areas for relaxing, having a coffee etc. Free internet in all public areas but not in bedrooms. 60 - 70 % of guests were retired and it is very well equipped for them with ramps to everything and lifts. If you're looking for nightlife it's definitely not the place to come but if you are after a quiet time reading and playing games it's ideal.

Room Tip: Seaview would be the best. Don't take one at the back (overlooking the carpark) as you won't...

Stayed here for six days. Not much close by but the hotel itself is pretty nice. Food was pretty good. Hotel staff was very friendly. Jose, the activities director was by far the best thing the hotel had going for them. Easy to rent a car and to get around. Rooms are clean but the beds are pretty firm. Good bit of noise from surrounding rooms. Overall not bad

I booked into Hotel Arenas Del Mar for one night before heading to the Airport in the South of Tenerife. It is really easy to find from the airport, its a lovely location with a good size pool and fab spa facilities, including a complimentary thalasso suite if you use the spa. The majority of guests looked like they were all inclusive, so I guess it is better to opt for that than pay as you go. Althought Euro 15 for lunch and 20 for dinner isn't too bad, alcohol is obviously additional. The clientele was real mix of Germans, English and a few other nationalities, so none were overwhelming. The room was lovely I had a suite with sea view. Not all the restaurant staff spoke english, which was surprising for a tourist hotel, but it didn't really detract.

My partner and I have just enjoyed a superb holiday at this excellent hotel, which has just become for Adults only and all-inclusive, both of which were reasons for us choosing it. We stayed from November 23 to 30, and travelled with Thomson /First Choice. We stayed "All Inclusive", so we are unable to comment on the cost of any food or drinks.

The Airport is very close, so the transfer took only about a quarter of an hour. Despite this proximity, there was very little aircraft noise to disturb us, and such as there was, was not a nuisance.

Upon arrival, we were shown to our room, which was lovely but faced the rear of the hotel and the mountains. We asked to upgrade to a sea-view room and were allocated 210. This is a superb room, a mini-suite really, and well worth the upgrade.

The bathroom was spacious, well-stocked with soaps and shampoos; a very efficient shower within the bath; a toilet and bidet; plenty of clean towels and a huge mirror.

The twin beds were superbly comfortable and we slept well every night. Plenty of wardrobe space and very efficient air-conditioning. The lounge area had a comfortable large couch, armchairs and a desk and a flat-screen television, which broadcast virtually all the BBC and ITV Channels, as well as Sky. A set of patio doors led to an impressively large, furnished balcony affording the most amazing sea-views. We enjoyed many a lovely sunset. The room was cleaned every day by a charming lady, who does her job very well.

The Bar and it's outside patio were extremely nice and there was plenty of choice of drinks.

The Dining-Room was spacious and well-appointed and all the food was of a very fine quality. There was plenty of choice at every meal and the meal times were very generous. The Dining-Room chairs are worn and stained and need to be either replaced or re-upholstered.

The pool area and the grounds are very well kept and there were plenty of sun-beds.

The Reception Staff were most courteous, helpful and efficient. All of the other Staff were very friendly and ensured that we enjoyed our stay.

A most successful holiday in an extremely well-run Hotel. Thank you.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a sea-view room if there is one available.
