“Delightful family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

From the moment we arrived this lovely family ensured we had everything we hoped for. This little hotel has been in the same family for generations and they take pride in everything they do. The lovely rooms are spotless, tasteful and sympathetically refurbished to reflect the historic building extremely, and well appointed with attention to detail. Lovely Korres toiletries, fluffy white towels and a fridge with welcome drinks. The breakfast is freshly prepared and cooked to order there are home made jams and preserved fruits. Breakfast can be taken in the cozy dining room or on your private balcony at a time that suits you..the family are always on hand to see if you need anything or just for a chat and a smile....they really understand the concept of 5* hospitality in a prime harbour front location...there is nowhere like this!

Room Tip: Duplex studio rooms with private balcony overlooking the harbour

I suppose the real acid test with a hotel is "would my mum like it?". My mum's pretty fussy but she would have loved this place. Clean, friendly, great breakfast in the morning and not ridiculously overpriced either.

We stayed for 2 nights in August, 2012 in one of the rooms to the front so we were overlooking the harbour. The room was lovely, split over two levels with the bed upstairs, it was all clean, modern and comfortable. The balcony is the real winner, you can just sit out at night watching the people and the ships, the early morning balcony show is fantastic though as from about 6am you see the cargo boats arriving and being unloaded, it's a real hive of activity and because there are no cars on the island most of the cargo is transferred onto the backs of donkeys. You have not lived until you have see a donkey carrying a washing machine.

Long story short - This hotel is excellent and I think it's a complete must for anybody staying in Hydra. Hydra itself is paradise.

we spent a long weekend during off-season period and were able to enjoy a good room price and choice of the best window view in the hotel. the hotel is located right in the center of the hydra port, which is not that busy in the spring days, but quite noisy in the evenings (we didn't have a big problem with it though). the room was decorated in stone and wood, with a high ceiling, very spacious and cute. we didn't have any breakfast in the hotel, as we were curious to eat outside.

Hotel Sophia is a small gem in the center of the crown of Hydra. The hotel is small, exceptionally clean, romantic and well appointed with AC, internet access, tv, and a mini fridge. The best part of the hotel aside from the amazing family that cares for you is the view! If you are lucky enough to get a room in the front of the hotel then your views will be at the center of the harbor looking out onto the gorgeous boat filled water. My favorite way to pass time at the hotel is to sit on the balcony in the morning and watch the boats and donkeys coming and going. Since Hydra has no motorized traffic donkeys take all of the supplies including luggage, food, and building materials to their final destinations. Imagine watching the sun making the water sparkle, with the sounds of the donkeys slowly trotting up the island. To me, it is paradise and I couldn't ask for anymore! I have visited the island 3 times and each time I have stayed at the Sophia. The energy on the island is as special at that of the hotel, I feel that they are both magic.

Room Tip: try to get a room that has one of the two front balconies

My husband & I were in Hydra for the 3rd. time this past May. We normally stay in private apartments. Due to a knee injury we decided to stay in the harbor as walking up more then 110 steps would really bother my knee. I must say that I am glad that I injured my knee or I probably would not have discovered this wonderful place. The rooms are so clean and decorated to enhance the essence of the building. The owners are are so friendly (just like family). The place was charming. The view from the balcony was wonderful. We had our breakfast there every morning and watched the harbor come alive. I felt like I was living in a postcard. We will be back!!!

Room Tip: Get the rooms with the private balconies

The guesthouse is situated just in the front line of the village, - and this is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The rooms are decorated with style and exceptionally clean. Very comfortable bed. The bathroom is very functional (shower cabin would not close properly, but this was the only downside and I'm sure they are going to fix it). Shower cosmetics from Korres - just like in best European hotels. All the water in the island is imported, there are no restrictions applied, but it would be nice to use shower in moderation. The view from the balcony is just great, as the hotel is right in the center of the picturesque port. There are some good taverns in proximity (Zefyros and Lulus are just a few meters away).

The owners, Ms. Angeliki and Ms. Vassiliki, are sisters, they have grown up on the island and know everything about it. They are very hospitable - I just walked in one Saturday evening without doing much hotel research and was offered a good price which, as it turned out, was quite competitive by the island's upmarket standards. We were instantly offered milk and yogurt for our child, and there was the possibility to leave your luggage after check-out time the next day. The breakfast was excellent.

The guesthouse's location saves you a lot of walking (or even hiking) which could be inevitable in some other places, but one really should explore not only waterfront line but the whole village which turns out to be surprisingly expansive, clean and beautiful. Panoramic views are quite a reward for climbing the steep stairs, but this is best done very early in the morning.

I disagree with one unfavorable review whose author complains about several things that are out of control of the owners. Noisy port life is not a big issue - after all, you are paying to be on the front line and have THE view. Wakeup call by church bells (or sometimes crying mules) is heard invariably anywhere in the village, which is built on amphitheater-like scenery with ideal acoustic qualities. By the way, this guesthouse has triple window glasses in front of the building, they could hardly do more to address the noise problem. The rooms facing a backstreet are quieter. My fellow traveler complains about "frozen croissants freshly baked for breakfast", but they are just fine for me (by the way, the fresh-fresh croissants would take up to 10 hours to prepare, and the difference would not be immediately felt).

But the main tip I disagree with is that they need "hotel management training for well-travelled guests". I think they have just the right amount of professionalism, not to be confused with faceless sterile service of big hotels. No, you go to a traditional Greek guesthouse in order to experience the hospitality of a Greek family, which could be not perfect by Sheraton's technical standards, but you feel exceptionally welcome and comfortable, a real guest of a hospitable family. If a Greek gives the name of her mother to a guesthouse of hers, you could be sure she will see to your comfort. Limited English of the owners does not seem to be a problem (but I spoke to them in Greek). Feel free (but not obliged) to engage in a conversation - you will feel rewarded.
