“Want to go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

Returned to the Orquidea, and had a great two weeks, with my wife and 12 year old son, loads to do, and great fun joining in the quizzes and and various silly games, our son made various friends for the holiday. The best way to enjoy a holiday here, to 'get involved', I'm 48 and have never done an aqua aerobics session in my life outside of here.

To counter the negative comments by some, if you want 5 star luxury, then go and pay for it somewhere else, I don't think Thomson's star rating has ever claimed to be the same as 5 star Savoy.

If you've got children anywhere up to 16, they will have a great time, if you don't like children, even your own, or haven't got any, then by default this isn't the place for you.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, with a room over looking the 'El Sultan', all rooms are sea facing any...

Absolutely superb fantastic relaxing fun packed bl00dy brilliant holiday. Kids entertainment is spot on.Things to do all through the day with reps entertainment. Nothing like years ago. These reps know how to get you involved. I have never seen a full hotel get involved in every activity from morning till night. I'm not going to complain about the food as it's the same as EVERY All Inc. repetitive with just a few different dishes each night. However the quality of the food is amazing. Only two things to let you know about is,(and this is not a complaint) if you want a sea/pool view, you need a room from 4th floor up as there is a LOT of trees and the roofs of the buildings are all close together and you won't see much from 4th floor down. and the beach is a tiny tiny tiny little arch with a few public sunbeds that you have to pay for and it's mainly black rock with shingly sand. Can't wait to go back

Room Tip: For a sea or pool view you need a room from the 4th floor up as there is a LOT of high palm trees.

I am certain that there is only the one hotel at this location...or for some reason, there are two sets of reviews....photos are similar...
Either way...am happy to report a wonderful holiday.
Arrived late evening, fast check in...and couldnt have really been aware of that when opening the curtains next morning..wall to wall sunshine!!
Room was clean and spacious. Good towels...and changed daily.
Pools good with plenty of space even in July. Cjildren had lots of fun...squeals of laughter....
Gardens excellent..with quiet corners for those of us who like to really relax.

Food..being a Coeliac, (I cant eat anything with wheat/rye/barley)..was all labelled with pictorial signage..so even if your langauge wasnt English..no problem This shows the Scandinavian origins of this hotel. I had no problems all week....choice of cereals, bread etc. Even desserts...
Always hot, with a good housekeeping team looking after the service area. Omelettes made fresh each morning....
Other dining are had a quiet shady area...for lunchtime...

Went out and about on the island tour...in a fleet of mini busses..with radio commentary..into the wilder mountainous areas...can recommend this...see a part of Gran Canaria you wouldnt get to see any other way...several eagles flying in the skies above...

Would I go back?? Yes please...

Room Tip: Above the third floor...as the palm trees spoil the view

We just came back from our two weeks at Bahia Feliz where we stayed at the Las Pitas, just adjacent to the Orquidea. It is operated by the same staff and with the same standards, so I presume that the review applies to that one as well.

Expecting the announced four star standard, arriving to the hotel room was a total shocker. Old and worn furniture, a barely functioning miniature TV-set without sound, filthy floor tiles, beds and sofa stained and splattered is one thing, but the whole two-room apartment completely reeked of urine.

Opening the bathroom door revealed the source of the stench: hairs and yellow deposits in the bathtub, black stains of mildew in every corner, a disgusting and greasy shower curtain, broken tiles, a leaking faucet, and hideous yellow-brownish residue of human origin in the toilet. Add to this a few dead bugs and worms on the floor and the overwhelming stench of urine and you have the basic picture.

Finding this standard totally unacceptable, we immediately went to the reception and requested somebody to do something about this, while we went for a walk around the hotel complex. Getting back revealed that the cleaning staff (a charming lady by the way) actually tried to perform some housekeeping, but as we later found out, her cleaning toolbox contained of a brush and an wet towel on a stick, when a proper cleaning at this stage would have required a fire hose, a jackhammer and some industrial strength chemicals.

In the end, we decided to endure the filth instead of letting it ruin our two week holiday, but a few times we were admittedly on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

The main restaurant at the Orquidea is buffet style, with dozens of different dishes for both breakfast, lunch and dinner. A lot of the stuff is the ubiquitous tepid, deep-fried saturated greasejunk, but it is fully possible to stick to healthy alternatives. Some of the fish dishes are excellent, and you can always find fresh fruits or vegetables. There is always a surprising selection of food for people with allergies and intolerance disorders.

Our two girls loved the pancakes and the omelettes. The chocolate fountain was also great fun!

A lot of the leftover food is reinvented to the next meal in a new disguise, so a wise decision is to stay away from all food that is recyclable - like casseroles, pork loins, chicken curries and stuff - you just don't know how long it has been around. Stick to the food that is prepared in front of you and which looks FRESH. Also, stay away from the local wine unless for a laugh - it is absolutely atrocious and is unsuitable for human consumption. Maybe by simply obeying these home-made rules, we managed to get away without getting sick.

Unfortunately there are no trays to use, so the whole restaurant is filled with people balancing plates and drinking glasses like acrobats, while others keep running back and forth between their tables and the food area. As result, the noise level in the main restaurant area is ridiculous and you will be overrun by kids at every step spilling food and soft drinks over you.

It would still not be so bad, but unfortunately a lot of the guests (mostly British, overweight and tattooed all over) are apparently incapable of behaving in a civilized manner - and not just the kids: we even saw a grown up man peeling a banana and tossing the skin back into the fruit bowl without flinching. Oogah.

You can get away from the main hustle by sitting in the more relaxed court area outside. You will then of course have to endure the *extremely* pesky flies constantly landing in your food or hovering around your face. Less annoying are the docile and skinny stray cats, which our daughters couldn’t but keep feeding.

The staff at the restaurants is amazing - I cannot understand how they can keep up this constant pace, the noise and the rude and ill-behaving guests while still looking so relaxed, smiling, calm, courteous and gentle. Bravo!

Of course, the main attraction of such a place is the pool area. There are three pools, a kiddie pool for the toddlers and two slightly deeper for the more adult crowd. Everything is kept reasonably clean and tidy in spite of some of the guests persistently littering everywhere. The same Brit crowd, by the way. Where do these people come from?

You will have to be prepared to pay a 10 Euro deposit for a stained (although clean) beach towel that you can exchange for a fresh one twice a week.

There are a few hundred yellow sunbeds placed around the pool area, but we soon discovered that usually none of these are free after six in the morning. Even with the pool area completely empty at this time, all the sunbeds are already "reserved". It is completely ridiculous - people obviously get out of their beds at the crack of dawn to place their towels on four or five adjacent sunbeds, and then return to the rooms to continue sleeping or having breakfast or whatever. There are signs saying that the staff will remove abandoned beach towels on the sunbeds, but this of course never happens. So if you take a relaxed breakfast and get out to the pool at around eight or nine, you need to be either lying on the small grass patch outside the hotel area, or go sunbathing somewhere else.

There are one or two socorristas (lifeguards) with red t-shirts and red caps constantly hovering around the pool area, and they seem to take their jobs very seriously indeed. Too much horseplay in the pool and they will be there in a heartbeat, blowing their whistles and telling the kids off. Feels very reassuring.

If you decide to venture away from the pool and into the real world, the Atlantic Ocean shore is nearby. Be warned, as it is a bit frightening, rocky and possibly pretty dangerous. Fun for windsurfers, but it scared the living daylight out of our children.

The entertainment around the pool is never-ending: the British Thomson staff constantly keeps arranging water-gymnastics, water-polo or just some general goofing around. Usually these activities involves loudspeakers cranked up to the max, so there is no sleeping by the poolside, if that was your idea. Our girls enjoyed most of the activities nonetheless.

The Scandinavian entertainment is much more quiet and laid-back with Bamse the Bear performing a parade to the nearby hotel and performing some silly acts. Sometimes Coco the Clown also appears with a cute blonde sidekick in a total unexpected way, appearing in the restaurant area, pretending to steal food and monkeying around. Pretty adorable.

Later in the evening, the British entertainment (?) continues around the stage area in the Fata Morgana bar besides the pool with noisy music and annoying contests howling from the loudspeakers. Ill-behaved British kids run around screaming, playing football on the grass areas, totally ignoring the "please stay off the grass" signs, shooting pool, nearly poking bypasser’s eyes out, while their parent’s relax in the bar, watching the sports on the flat-screen TV, drinking beer and smoking.

That's when we usually decided to take a long walk along the beach sidewalk and leaving Bahia Feliz for a welcome change of scenery.

Returned last month from Hotel Orquidea where we had an absolutely excellent holiday. We arrived in the early hours and check-in was very quick and efficient. We had connecting rooms on the second floor which were very clean and spacious with plenty of wardrobe and clothes space. We had a nice pool view balcony which was ideal for us.

We found this to be an ideal hotel for families. There was non stop entertainment from about eleven and you could choose to join in or just enjoy watching the fun going on around you. The entertainment team were fantastic, really hard working and making sure everyone was having fun. A special mention for Big Daddy-he is an absolute natural entertainer and really goes that extra mile for us holidaymakers. I loved his aqua splash sessions-definitely not too be missed! Night time entertainment was good too and our kids really enjoyed it.

The pools were fantastic, the splash pool being ideal for my littlest while the bigger ones had great fun in the medium sized pools. Getting a sun bed in your ideal spot did involve an early rise to put down towels-if you can't beat them..... My only criticism would be that the hotel could do with more parasols. They are a necessity in this heat with small children and there were not nearly enough although a lot of the palm trees did provide coverage. There was loads for my chilldren to do, they were never bored and enjoyed every bit of their 14 days. They really enjoyed sessions at the kids clubs. The staff there were really great, always smiling and upbeat even after long hot days-they were especially good with my 3 year who was sometimes a bit anxious going in at first.

The food was absolutely delicious at this hotel. There was a huge choice at every meal time, we were really spoiled for choice. We tended to go down a bit later for dinner and encountered no queues. The snack bar was ideal for a quick bite or lunch by the pool and it was nice to have the choice of so many snacks all day rather than the set times we have seen at other all inclusive hotels. It meant my children could go up and help themselves as they could with the good selection of self service drinks that were on offer. I was a little dubious of the cold food left lying uncovered in the snack bar what with the large amount of flies about some days, however the staff did their best to keep a lot of it covered up.

All in all this was a fabulous family holiday. It is definitely one of the best family hotels we have been to and we will most definitely return!

This hotel was fabulous. Uopn arival we fund the staff friendly and very helpful. Our room was spaceous and well layed out. It was kept clean and had everything we could need for the duration of our stay. This hotel is good for both couples and families. Entertainment was brilliant, with a variety of things suitable for all ages both in the day and in the evening. We were all inclusive, and the food and drink on offer was delicious and varied, which made it hard to find a reason to leave the hotel.

We stayed here last year and decided to return, worrying that it would not be as good with a different team of reps. Hotel just as good - wide range of food, helpful staff, fabulous pools, great spa, large rooms, quiet and safe location for children.

Thomson reps were superb. Kids club reps were great, entertainment reps fantastic (even in the face of some overly competitive adult guests) and all made us feel welcome. For a family friendly hotel in the sun with a relatively short flight, short transfer time and competitive pricing, it is hard to beat. Would recommend it to anyone wanting their kids to have a good time and not expecting Mark Warner style refinement for the adults at budget prices.
