“luxury on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Wonderful hotel right on the beach, the rooms combine sophistication with a real Sri Lankan atmosphere. Food is excellent with some beautifully prepared Sri Lankan, Thai and European dishes combined with efficient but friendly service. Highly recommended for a beach holiday with a true Sri Lankan feeling.

Just try to get a room here if you want a real 5 star hotel experience. We normally stay in hotels like Kempinski... And even they are not to compare.

In front of the hotel sea turtles are swimming and we saw the most beautiful fishes.

Would be an excellent hotel to give a wedding.

This hotel is one of the best hotels have had the pleasure of staying in. Staff, food, service, rooms were all first class. Rooms were fantastic, beach front, balcony ground floor, with the aromas of spice filling the air, the beds were heavenly. Stayed at the end of our 16 day holiday in 2012, for 6 nights
Missing the place a lot, will definatley return, once the teenagers want to do there own thing!!!!!! Very soon i hope

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are a must!!!!!

We stayed here for 6 nights at the end of our trip to Sri Lanka, and it was amazing. After being shown to our room, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded and had a plunge pool in the corner! Fortunately, they turn the pump off in the evening so it didn't ruin the sound of the waves outside. The room was large, with Bose sound system, iPod, Nespresso machine, as well as a massive bathroom, with Jacuzzi bath. We were also able to walk out the front to the gardens and pool area.
The pool man was great, and kept us the same beds each day, and you're given a flag to get the bar staff's attention when you need it. The other staff were very attentive as well - we were asked every morning how we slept, how are room was, and if there was anything else they could do for us.
We ate at the hotel every lunchtime as there isn't anywhere else nearby for approx £20 per day, and had dinner one night too. We opted for the buffet as it was a BBQ night, and the food was brilliant - definitely a higher standard than other buffets we had, but more expensive. The other nights we picked up a tuk tuk from across the road to take us to Unawatuna (R1200) or Galle (R2000).

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying the extra to get a sea view.

We popped in to The Fortress for Lunch on Poya Day and I really thought their buffet was one of the better ones we had in Sri Lanka. The selection was excellent, the food was very fresh and there was a choice of locations to sit...in air conditioning, under the terrace or in the sunshine. Sitting near the pools and looking over the sea is a beautiful setting. I liked the entrance to the hotel and it is worth a visit even if you are not staying thre. I think next time I might check in for a few days R&R as the pool loungers looked very comfortable.

We stayed here for 2 nights at end of our Sri Lanka journey. The hotel was beautifully constructed and designed in modern Dutch & Portuguese style. As soon as you enter the "Fort Wall", we felt like as if we had been a tropical paradise. We booked the Beach room, located on the ground floor, which gave us easier access to the pool and beach. The room was very spacious and well furnished with Bose sound system. It was definitely worth the extra money!

The spa was an lovely experience. We had massages in one of the couple treatment rooms. The area was very peaceful and that certainly helped you recharge yourself. The staff there was very friendly and helpful.

There were not much local restaurants near the hotel. Therefore, we dined at Heat mostly during our stay. It did offer a variety of international menu - woodfire oven pizza and grilled seafood were good options for lunch. We did try the seafood platter one night but it was somewhat disappointing. It was not as fresh as we thought it would be, given it was located right next to the coast.

This hotel is definitely a great option if you prefer a more private and exclusive beach resort experience. It is within 15 minute ride to the Galle town and get away from the main beach crowds.

Room Tip: Beach room on the ground floor would be best to access to the beach, pool and lawn.

We just returned after a week stay at The Fortress.
On the whole, we much enjoyed our stay in this 'Small Luxury Hotel'.
I don't think that readers of trip advisor like to read long stories, so I prefer to enumerate the positive and rather negative impressions.
First, the positive side:
* the building of the hotel is very characteristic with a stylish combination of old Dutch colonial + Sri Lankese architecture and design
* the standard room (Fortress Room) was very spacious and comfortable (with several stylish design elements such as very beautiful hardwood flooring) with several amenities such as a well equiped Bose music installation
* the majority of the staff members were very helpful and friendly
* the situation of the hotel at the shore is lovely; it's also possible to make long strolls alongside the beach
* there is a beautiful (however small) garden around the swimming pool
* we could appreciate the Heat restaurant; nice cuisine, there is a good choice of affordable wines
The rather negative points which need some improvement:
* having said that the room was very stylish, we must admit that the furnishing of the bathroom (bath, chests...) lacked an ergonomic approach
* when you really hate a limited view from your room, you should better take an ocean or beach room; the Fortress Room only offers a rather stupid view at a high wall, and it was too hot to sit there
* there are certainly not enough seats outside the restaurant area allowing you to have a drink (coctail/apéritif) in the evening
* the restrooms of the main restaurant could bear some air-cooling given the tropical heat
* when we made reservation for The Fortress (half board), we tought that dinner was always to choose from the menu: it seemed however that there was very (to) often a buffet. When taking something à la carte, you have to pay a supplement ....

Room Tip: Better take an ocean or beach room! Avoid the Fortress Room when you desires an open view!
