“Once again........ amazing! Good job Fortress.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

Third time here and it just keeps getting better.......

I almost don't want to say too much as it is such a great hotel, in the most amazing country, that if too many of you hear about it we may find it hard to book again next year!

We took our 20 year old son this time and he loved it. He didn't mind that it is quiet because the sheer luxury, superb service, great food and beautiful rooms more than compensated. He normally avoids massages but booked numerous treatments at the spa, a big compliment to them, and he loved visiting the well equipped gym everyday.

Well done The Fortress, excellent holiday yet again...... we will be back!

One important point. You will find that getting hold of a reliable tuctuc driver is not always easy so we would certainly recommend local tuctuc driver, Chamara, we have used him over the last few years and originally met on the beach. He is excellent, trustworthy, a good driver, always finding us great bargains and very reasonably priced. We went on a number of tours with him, that included whale watching, turtle hatchery, tea plantation, diving, shopping and numerous dinner trips. Please contact me directly if you would like me to send his contact details.

Room Tip: Ocean front room on the upper level.

The Fortress is immaculate it's really impressive, only 53 rooms so plenty of space for the guests. The room was huge and very impressive but unfortunately we were given one of the few rooms without a sea view. our room faced a big mouldy wall, there was a ladder outside and some black sheeting to the left, all they need to do is paint the wall and tidy it up a bit. The food was massively expensive. We also had a banging noise in our room which woke us up every hour during the night. We opened all the doors thinking it may be a door banging. By the time we tracked the noise down to the air conditioning unit it was a bit late as we'd had two sleepless nights. We reported it and asked for some money off but they didn't seem to believe us to start with. They paid for our lunch which was nice but when you're paying £250 a night you don't expect to be kept awake. I think a reduction would have been a nice gesture. Apart from that the place is stunning, lovely to sit by the pool and walk up the beach.

We stayed here for 9 days and it was really impressive. The staff were without exception all helpful and friendly. Our room (19) was massive and although we didn't have sea view it was really nice. Large bathroom with walk in shower. 7 ft x 7 ft bed! We used the gym which had plenty of kit and wasn't ever busy. The food was really good - lots of choice and the menu changed every day. The chef and the restaurant manager always visible and happy to specific things if required. You could get decent wine for £20 a bottle. The pool was an infinity one and was very large and warm (only few children when we visited) Each night there was evening entertainment - usually ok! Its not cheap but if you can afford it - its worth the money. It's a five star hotel without doubt

Room Tip: Depends on what you can afford - sea view is pricey -

This is an attractive, well run hotel within around 30 minutes drive of Galle. We had a sea view room with a large seating area and very chic interiors, which I would highly recommend. I'm not sure what view the non-sea view rooms have, I suspect it may be the perimeter wall. The staff were professional and friendly and the food was great. We had booked to stay at the Lighthouse but were informed a few days before departure that there is major renovation work taking place until November 2013 and so changed to the Fortress. If you want to be close to Galle but do not want to stay in one of the small hotels inside the city this is a great alternative.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are excellent.

Absolutely loved my experience at this property. I had an Ocean Loft suite, essentially a duplex with a plunge pool inside the room. The balcony on the first floor with a view of the beach was unbelievable. The master bathroom is massive, and there are Bvlgari toiletries.

They seem to have mastered the art of hospitality here. I was given a butler for my stay. While he was not intrusive, he would be immediately available every time I needed him.

They have a beautiful infinity pool right by the beach. There is only restaurant / dining option in the hotel and that could get a bit boring for longer stays. The breakfast quality was average and could be improved, however dinner was nice.

What can I say about The Fortress? Is it luxurious? Yep certainly is! We had an ocean room which was enormous with a fabulous bathroom, large seating area, the biggest bed I have ever seen and a balcony with a comfy table and chairs. There was FRESH MILK in the fridge for the complimentary tea and coffee. Staff were all very welcoming and friendly - nothing was too much trouble. The spa was lovely - I had a lovely facial.

All the public areas were clean and tidy and there were ample sun beds and lots of other comfortable seating areas. The swimming pool was devine. Large and beautifully warm. Staff were very attentive with numerous beach towels available. There was a fab poolside menus and drinks on hand.

The dining experience was good - the food was well cooked and the service professional. My only concern would be the depth of choice. We stayed 3 nights and with the menus available being served at both lunch and dinner I think anyone staying longer might begin to get slightly bored with the choice,

Visited in Jan 2013 for our honeymoon. It's about 3hrs from Colombo Airport but well worth the drive.

We were welcomed by the doorman ringing a bell and opening the huge fortress doors. Immediately we were greeted by name, congratulated on our honeymoon and given towels and champagne. Check in was in the room, which is a nice touch, and what a room! It was enormous, split level, with a lounge area leaving to a balcony overlooking the ocean. Huge, very comfortable bed, double rain shower and free standing spa bath which was amazing.

Food and Beverage were high-end quality and service immaculate, with most staff remembering our names and room number from the first day and always greeting us warmly. We went half board, which was good value so we got a great breakfast and dinner and only had to pay for drinks and lunch if we decided to take it, which saved us a couple of hundred pounds in the end. By speaking to the F&B manager we were given great tables outside for dinner and on our last night the Front Office Manager, Peshan, had arranged a special table on our own actually in the shallow end of the lighted pool, dining with our feet in the water!

Hotel has free wifi which is a bonus and a very large pool and there are plenty of sun loungers and nobody hassling you to play volleyball etc! very peaceful. The beach is right in front of the hotel and we saw a large turtle there one day. It is not really a swimming beach as the currents are quite strong, but there is a safe area where you can swim. There are the usual TukTuk guys around the beach who will talk to you and offer tours etc, but they do not really hassle you much.

Quite a few excursions on offer and there is a nice lake and turtle hatchery a few minutes away and it is definitely worth a short ride into Galle to see the fort and lighthouse.

Basically. This is a very special hotel, which only has about 50 rooms so it has a personal touch. Very high quality, peaceful and romantic. It's quite a way to get here from Colombo and its not really a beach hotel, although there is a sandy beach. Definitely go for an Ocean View room on the upstairs floor. Forget the ones with an indoor pool in the room, why would you use that? And upstairs is more private.

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and we met the General Manager, FOM, HSK and F&B managers who all had plenty of time for the guests. Thank you to them and the team for making our honeymoon so memorable!
