We stayed at Kokona's for 3 nights in late August. The hotel is situated near the centre of Gialos (Symi's harbour), about 10 mins walk from where the ferry leaves you. A first advantage that can be important in Symi is that the way to the hotel is flat- no steps. Be careful when choosing a hotel in this beautiful island as you may have to go up and down many steps every day. The hotel itself is beautiful, a traditional Symian house, freshly painted and clean. The location is nice, viewing an impressive bell tower and the nearby church, but there is no sea view and no sea breeze. The room we were given was at the first floor- it was rather small, with an also small balcony. Cleanliness was of a good level, but beds were rather hard and noisy and the bathroom facilities a bit dated. The biggest problem we faced was some drunk tourists passing by at night, who chose the breakfast tables of Kokona as the place to continue their night out. Anyway, for 55 euros per night in August we consider it a good and cheap choice to visit Symi. The house lady is really friendly and caring.
Now, a few words about Symi. First of all, you don't need to rent a car or moto. We rented for a day and soon realised it was useless. Only one beach is accessible by car (Marathounta) and it can also be visited by boat, as all the others. The taxi boats' fares are rather cheap and you can easily visit Aghios Georgios (one of the most impressive beaches we have ever visited), Marathounta (with very nice waters), Nanou and Aghia Marina (with a small sandy beach but with a very good restaurant run by a frenchman). We also had the boat trip around the island with boat Triton. The highlight was the buffet at the beach, all for 35 euros per person. Compared to the boat trips in other islands it is a very good price.
Finally, we have to mention that we had a good dinner at Neraida restaurant. Take care of the nearby Mylopetra restaurant- it's very expensive.
