“Good, simple, a bit expensive. Restaurant was disappointing.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

First week of august must be already low season in Norway. Only a few rooms were occupied, and the same goes for the tables at the restaurant.

This has often an impact on the quality of a stay in a hotel, both ways. Indeed, nights were quiet and we enjoyed it. The impression at the restaurant, however, both for breakfast and dinners, was that the choice was kept to a minimum, because of the very low number of guests. While this can be understandable for dinner, where a choice of four dishes was given, the breakfast buffet looked really small.

During our stay we tried at dinner most of the dishes available (salmon, beef and hamburger), some of them more than once), and all of them tasted quite basic. Mind it, I like simple food, but simple food can be tasty, once well prepared. Here the impression was a lack of care. Acceptable, but not really good.

Room Tip: Easy: lake-side!

When waiting at the ferry at Hirtshals (DK), the reception called to check if I wanted dinner, to give driving instructions and to see if there were any open questions. Guess this is possible in low-season only.
I seemed to have been the only guest that night, only obvious by the car park and the breakfast room/restaurant being empty - all the staff did their best to give me a good time (and spoke excellent English).
Dividers make the restaurant, overlooking the lake, look quite cosy even for the lone person. Had a lovely, no-fuzz dinner: A plate loaded full with meatballs with gravy, potatoes and vegetables (thank you to the kitchen providing this!). True hospitality: They didn't prepare any random table convenient for them, but one at the far end with a beautiful view over the lake, so my first evening in Norway was fun.
Had a wonderful sleep in a lake-side room (305).
Bedroom plain and simple, equipped as described, well lit. Good storage for luggage and clothing. Windows cannot be opened fully (safety feature/less mosquitoes?).
Bathtub with shower with very pleasant high water pressure. What's the aluminium frame on top of the tub for? Room spotless clean, looks a bit dark due to color/style of tiles. Floor heating seems to be quite common in Norway, but for me, it was a pleasant surprise.
Fast and stable WiFi.
Access to power sockets a bit limited.
At breakfast the table was loaded full with a wide range of different types of jam, cheese, meat, fish, plus different fruit juices, fresh fruit ... just add whatever you might fancy.
Stayed only one night, didn't ask about the spa-area, so cannot tell anything about it.
Different cosy sitting rooms with comfortable looking sofas and armchairs.
Bulky/heavy luggage: When entering from outside, you need to go down some steps and up again to reach your room. Didn't inquire about an elevator, but am convinced that there is one somewhere.
Good location to explore the area, there's a lot to see and to do.
Easy to access by car with sufficient parking space.
Nothing that had any influence on my stay, just some thoughts: In case an overall refurbishment of the rooms is planned one day, maybe change the carpet in the rooms (to wood-style laminate?). It was spotless clean, but starts to fade a little bit. And maybe re-position/add powersockets. Otherwise size and facilities of the room are very good, I enjoyed it. Thank you for the excellent service for one guest :)

To sum it up: Got everything I needed and more. Pleasant, relaxing stay, to be repeated.

Room Tip: The lake-side rooms provide a stunning view. Don't know about the activities on the shore and gr...

If you want to stay in Setesdal, you couldn't pick a better place than Byglandsjord. The location is great because it is just outside the town of Evje which is the largest village in the valley. The hotel is extremely well run with Andreas, the owner, a welcoming and cheerful chap. A family hotel, relaxed and right on the water. The foyer area is the best in the valley. Handy for hopping up and down the road to the various attractions and activities.
