“Dream resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012 via mobile

My husband, 2 1/2 year old daughter and I stayed here for one week just before Christmas. This resort truly deserves the excellent reviews given, and I am baffled by the negative ones (most of them are older, so I think that a lot has changed recently). From the moment we arrived in Ko Samui, we felt like we were on a dream holiday, starting with the pick up service from the hotel, complete with cold towels and water.  We got a garden deluxe pool view room on the ground floor (ground floor per our request) which was perfect as our daughter spent hours each day in the pristine, big garden pool. The pool is interesting, with different depths for children, babies and toddlers and is surrounded by beautifully managed gardens. The pool bar and Bistro restaurant are excellent - wonderful cocktails and great food. Personally, I thought staying at the garden pool was better than near the beach, as the sea isn't so great for swimming in at the resort, and the lower pool not as nice as the upper (garden) one.

The staff is great. I didn't encounter any negativity and smiles and greetings freely given. Yes, some don't speak much English but I didn't feel this was ever an issue for us. Everyone worked really hard to make our stay pleasant, and the resort functions like a well oiled machine. Everything is well planned and tastefully executed, from the nightly events and meals, to the gorgeous local artwork and furnishings.

Breakfasts are wonderful - recommend the eggs Florentine as a previous poster had too. I ate them nearly every day, probably gained about 5kgs during our stay here!! I also took a cooking class with one of the sous chefs, highly recommended! It was a lot of fun, but be prepared to eat a LOT if you do one!!

We ventured out a lot, thanks to the help of Mira and others who booked and recommended various places - Paradise Park great for kids, elephant trek at the waterfall was fun, and the day trip on Josephine, the hotel boat, was perfect.

I don't often want to revisit places, but I would come back here in a heartbeat. I felt like there was a huge amount left for us to do, but Ko Tao now calls!

We married 15 dec and travelled from sweden to spend honeymoon in varinda garden resort in koh samui. When ee arrived were chocked over the standard there, no preparation for honeymoon, dark inside the luxury room, stop in the toilets and strange sounds from outside. I couldnt sleep the whole night after 20h trip and also cried from the situation. Early in the morning we started searching and we found the Rocky Resort, we took taxi to there, we met lovely warm welcoming people, we explained the situation and they immediately prepared such a wonderful suite with champange, flowers every where and we were so happy.
Yes we lost 45 000 bacht cause we cancelled our booking in varinda hotel but its better to loose thus than loosing honeymoon and get a bad memory when we go home.
Thank you wonderful Rocky Resort for saving our honeymoon!!!

My wife & I stayed at Rocky's for the 1st two weeks of December 2012. We stayed in a Pool View room adjacent to the pool on the upper level. We had never previously stayed at Rocky's, or been to Koh Samui but have travelled to other parts of Thailand in the past. The reason that we chose Rocky's was based upon the very positive reviews the resort had received previously.

Our first impressions were extremely positive. We were met at the reception with a cool drink & cold face washer to freshen up. The reception staff had an excellent understanding of the English language & was easily understood. They explained all of the details about the resort very well. The young girl sat on the floor right in front of us & ensured that we had good eye contact & was extremely helpful in answering any of the questions that we had.

The room was lovely & very comfortable for the two of us. All of the usual facilities that you would expect from a resort of this calibre were present. Additionally they had laid out a plate of fresh fruit in anticipation of our arrival. There were a couple of minor housekeeping issues & they attended to these immediately so as to ensure that the room met our desires at every level. The resort has been professionally designed, decorated & landscaped & it shows. It was by far & away the best surrounds that we have experienced from any hotel in Thailand. Of particular note is the landscaping which tends to segment & partition components of the resort & has been done with exquisite taste. As a boutique resort it is not large in any case, but the landscaping gives it even more of a feeling of being very small & intimate. Obviously the owners / management of the resort have instilled a robust regime of hotel maintenance with all of the staff. This is one aspect that we have found wanting in other resorts in Thailand where the intention is clearly to extract as much income from the guests without returning an adequate amount to the upkeep & maintenance of facilities.

The staff throughout the resort were extremely helpful & friendly. Nothing was too much drama for them to attend to. Typical Thai friendliness was abundant from all quarters of the hotel staff. During our stay there was a power outage to Koh Samui for about 4 continuous days. Whilst this did not affect the resort as it has a substantial back up Gen Set which provided continuous power throughout the outage, the staff went to the next level so as to ensure that we were not adversely affected in any way.

One of the first things that became apparent to my & myself was that we would need to hire a scooter for the duration of our stay. We have always liked to get out & about & explore our surrounds & without putting too fine a point on it, Rocky's is somewhat remote from the tourist shopping & eating precincts. We like to be able to go to a 7 – Eleven & stock the bar fridge with the nibbles & drinks that we like. It is quite a long walk from the Rocky’s to the nearest 7 – Eleven & you would not want to do it regularly. The hotel provides a shuttle service to Lamai & Chaweng about 3 times a day, but this does restrict you’re coming & goings. If you don’t want to hire a scooter then you may feel somewhat isolated if you want to see things on Koh Samui. Hiring a scooter through the resort is quite a bit more expensive than what you can arrange for yourself through one of the many rental agencies. We hired one of the larger style scooters through Spicy Phu who is about one kilometre from the resort towards Lamai for 300 baht per day.
The resort provides a full breakfast facility with both buffet & al carte food offerings. This is the one “Point for Improvement” area that I would make of the hotel. Both my wife & I were disappointed with the breakfast. The fresh fruit provided was tasteless compared to what we have previously experienced in Thailand. Whilst the menu is extensive, there were only a couple of dishes that we found inspiring. One of the treats that we have previously experienced in Thailand resorts is egg / omelette bar operated by a Thai cook, who will prepare an omelette in front of you with all of the fillings that you can pick from. We have found this service provides a real “Flair” & the omelettes were really scrumptious. This service was not available at Rocky’s & we believe that a rethink of the breakfast facilities would be a positive step for the resort.
The other disappointing aspect of our holiday was the business makeup of the Lamai shop owners. I have never seen a Thai town with more girlie bars, massage (sexy massage) parlours or go go bars as there is in Lamai. Additionally the girls are quite forward in their advances to the men, even when they are accompanied by their wives. My wife became quite intimidated by their amorous advances towards me.
Whilst we were there we took a day trip of the resorts boat “The Josephine”. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone who stays at Rocky’s. The vessel is a traditional old wooden teak Thai vessel which is in great condition. We have been on a number of boat trips in Thailand but this one was the best by a long way. The boat can only hold a relatively small number of passengers (Say 10 max) & provides a really intimate & friendly atmosphere as opposed to the larger & faster speed boats which operate in Koh Samui. We were able to fish (Everyone catches a fish), snorkel & finally had a BBQ lunch on a remote & uninhabited island. You get to eat the fish you catch & we highly recommend this as the fish are as sweet as.
In conclusion we would highly recommend Rocky’s as a resort destination with the proviso that it is removed from the larger & far more upmarket area of Chaweng, & as such you will in all likelihood need to rent a scooter to get around.

Room Tip: Pool view or Ocean facing if you can afford it.

After the hardcore party in phangan, we decided to book somewhere nice to spend our last days in Samui and we came accross this hotel in Tripadvisor. So we decided to book this place to give it a try.

To be honest at first we thought this place is really far from the city centre, but after getting to the hotel, those worries were gone and i personally loving this place. Nicely decorated giving a warm welcome experience. Service was excellent and the room was amazing.

The plus point is that they offer shuttle to Lamai city centre, it was only a 10 minutes ride away, and that place offer the same stuffs that you can find in chaweng, best is, it is less crowded and feel safer.

Overall the stay was really good, the service was great and the room was simply amazing!

I would strongly recommend this place to everyone, especially to spend your last few days in Samui!

The weather was absolutely not the resort's fault but because it rained for the whole 5 days we were there it limits our comments. We had a 2 storey villa with our own small pool, one of three at the very upper end of the resort, level with the main road. We looked down over the garden pool. The villa was spacious and well-appointed and had both ceiling fans and air-con. Adjacent to the garden pool was the casual all-day dining restaurant and one of the 2 pool bars (happy hour 4.30 to 6 in both) and the pool table which was far more in demand than usual because of the weather. Further down at the beach level was the breakfast and formal dinner restaurant along with the beach pool and pool bar.
We found the food and drink quality and prices reasonable for a resort, although obviously more expensive than down town Lamai. Staff were lovely and if they had trouble with a request there was always someone nearby to help interpret.
Over the years we have stayed in Koh Samui and Phuket probably ten times. Rocky's fits at about 3 or 4 on the list for ambience/luxury but also at about 3 or 4 for price so no complaints. I think we would have enjoyed a bigger beach and the opportunity to do long walks on the beach but the rain would have made that difficult anyway.
It is a nice size and is small enough to have personality and it does offer 2 bedroom pool villas (plenty of places offer the one bedroom ones but not ideal when travelling with an adult daughter)
We were there for Loy Krathong and enjoyed being able to take part in the celebration with the staff.

A couple of days here and we felt very relaxed after hectic Bangkok. On the pricey side and the pool view rooms cost more too but otherwise very enjoyable with accommodating staff, decent breakfast and a small beach out front.

Safes work fine....

Room Tip: Pool view but it costs a fair bit more.

We travelled around Thailand for 4 weeks and decided to treat ourselves with this expensive resort for our last 4 nights...even though it absolutely poured down non-stop, the room and the resort made up for it.

We were so excited when we arrived, we had a plate of fresh fruit waiting for us in the beautiful room - by far the nicest place we've stayed in.

The staff were warm and friendly and the food was incredible.

The breakfast was amazing...we wanted to spend the whole day in there so we could try everything...the choice was massive and the eggs florentine were delicious.

There was a small beach out front but because of the rain, we only ventured out once, it was a bit too rocky to go in though.

The security guard who stands outside the restaurant had a smile and a salute 24/7 and 2 of the staff Twie and Cherry who served our breakfast were absolutely lovely...warm, friendly, helpful and just made us feel happy when we saw them coming to serve us - thanks ladies!

The pools and grounds are beautifully kept....lots of twinkly fairy lights at night and hardly any mosquito's which was BRILLIANT!

There is a turn down service in the room which is a little treat when we arrive back in the room..although out of the 4 nights, we only had it twice!

We were a bit miffed that there was a 10% service charge and a 7% tax charge on top of what was already extortionate prices. we went to the BBQ and we were told the wine was included in the cost...when the bill came, we'd been charged I think 1,250 each (about £50 in total) for 'unlimited wine'...it clearly wasn't included in the cost! But as we had only been told about this towards the end of the meal, we had 2 or 3 glasses each and then we were pretty shocked when the bill came...obvioulsy a language barrier on our part let us down and again we had to pay the 17% charges on top.

We even paid service charges on our mini bar..which obviously was 3 to 5 times more expensive than it would be outside the resort. That annoyed me a little bit as we understood it was a high end resort but we're already paying a lot for the room.

when we arrived, we hadn't pre-booked and the receptionist, who was lovely said they didn't have any of the cheaper rooms left - only pool rooms available and at first, said the cost was about 3,000 baht more than we ended up paying. She phoned someone and then said she could give us a discount so we thought we were getting a good deal....however when we got to our room, I checked on booking.com and there were 3 of the cheaper rooms left AND the room she had given us a 'special offer' on was exactly the same price on booking.com. so my advice would be to book through booking.com beforehand!

We genuinely felt, other than the wine incident and the cost...we could not possibly fault this wonderfully run resort.....however........

We left 6,000 baht (£120) in our room, hidden under a menu as the safe was a bit difficult to use. We checked out, got to Bangkok and realised we'd forgotten to pick it up. I emailed the reception to request she collect it and I had no reply, so I emailed directly through their reservations page as they are renowned for being really quick at responding....not a word! so I went on the online chat facility - not responding...I emailed a further 4 times and had absolutely no response.

I then went on the facebook page, wrote on the wall and Martin the manager said he knew nothing of my complaint...and then removed the wall post! He said he'd get his receptionist to email back.

Of course, she promptly did as she had obviously not told him about the missing money.
She emailed saying they had been investigating it and the money is not there. Sorry!

Haha, for one, she could've emailed back to say they were checking it out the FIRST time i emailed but the lack of response just honestly makes me feel like they were avoiding me because someone has kept the money. There is no other explanation...we 100% left that money and it has not been returned so someone knows and no-one wants to help.

We had every intention of raving about this resort to all our travelling friends and family and now our lovely experience has just left us with bad taste in our mouths.

So upset with the outcome and for such a well thought of resort, the handling and ignorance of a simple request has been shocking.

I have emailed Martin twice since and had no response. I expect I'll get fobbed off on here too but I suppose if anything, learn how to use the tricky safe and don't leave any valuables/money in your room.
