This time we have been quite dissapointed with our visit to Thailand. It was our fourth visit and most probably three times was more than enough. We didn't book anything in advance like always, but unlike in previous times most of the hotels were either fully booked or had vacancies for just couple of days. The initial plan was to stay either at koh phangan or koh tao, but the room availability was also very limited on these islands. And also by that time we were tired of moving around (Bangkok, Krabi). So, Lamai was decided to be the place of our relax period of vacation. We stopped for three nights at the Weekender resort, which was really horrible, but that's in my other review at the resort's page. One of these three days we were walking along the Lamai beach and noticed a neat line of Arab type palm trees with just 8 or 10 sunbeds at the beach in front. We haven't seen this three or 5 years ago, so we decided to take a look. Walked in, and were absolutely amazed with the surroundings. My first attitude was: "wow, this is like a museum". And not a single tourist on the property. I told my wife that this was probably because the resort is overpriced and we finally ended up at the reception. The prices were high, but the surroundings seemed to be worth it. And surprisingly they had available rooms. So we booked the one of the villas for the remaining 13 days and it was the right choice.
The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. A lot of gold but not too much. Our daughter after all the previous resorts couldn't believe that this was the actual room that we were to stay at)). In the room everything was nice. I am not going to be too detailed about that. It is actually a lot nicer in reality, than it is on the pictures. The private pool and the terrace also spectacular. But the best thing about the resort is that it has only 18 villas and what you receive is a very calm atmosphere with no people around you. Even if you decide to go the the main pool, most of the time it becomes your private main pool, because no one is there, even with most of the rooms filled.
The restaurant where they serve breakfast is very clean and there is none of this typical feeling of "dirty" that we got at most Thai restaurants in Thailand. I don't mean Bangkok with some of its fancy restaurants, but these other small ones that you get at the resorts like koh Samui.
The prices at the resort restaurant are high. Three times higher than on the street. So we tried it once and decided that it was not worth overpaying. Most of the time we ate at the salathai restaurant on the main beach road. That one is also very nice but not as expensive as the resort's restaurant.
Overall we were very pleased with the place and our stay, but there are some negatives that I just wanted to mention. And most probably these negatives are the reason why this resort is still affordable. If they manage to deal with those they can set the prices at a higher level.
The service. Doesn't quite correspond to its fancy surroundings. It seems that most of the staff is not trained for a 5 star service approach. Some of them don't even greet you, when you pass by. Most of the staff is average, the same as you get at a 3 star hotel. Some of the people are nice, but it is just a few and unfortunately I don't remember their names. It is a girl who is responsible for the activities and a European guy at the front desk. Also one of the new guys they hired and he was serving breakfast with the other girls. Who actually are not as nice, they try, but it just doesn't go naturally and most of the time it seems that they hate you.
The other thing. We stayed at the right wing if you look at the hotel from the beach. And most of the time when you relax outside on your beautiful terrace you are forced to inhale something that feels like someone is burning something. The smell is coming from outside, the farthest right corner behind the fence. Nobody is burning anything, but it seems like there's some type of a system that works on gasoline that is being burnt and this you have to breathe with during your stay. Sometimes it was really bad, sometimes ok, but it definitely spoiled the experience. They have to do something about it. When you are in a hotel like that you really want to smell fresh air or the flowers, but not the burning or gasoline products.
The staff tuc-tuc is another annoying thing. It makes too much noise cruisng around the territory during all day and evenings. The area is not that big, so I believe staff can either walk or use some type of a motor-free cart or pull type cart to if they need to carry something heavy. It is a drawback, which I believe could be easily resolved with an electric golf-cart.
The resort is fairly new, but the some of the things around seem shabby, as if the resort is 5-6 years old...
But hey!! You start to notice this only if you are on a long stay))) if you stay for two or three days you would probably have a great experience.
This hotel was like a savior for us! It is the best thing you can experience and find on Lamai. The pavilion hotel, another boutique resort is very crowded. Does not correspond with boutique to me.

Dear Ruslan K,

Thank you for choosing Ammatarapura for your recent stay in Koh Samui, Thailand.
We also appreciate that you have taken out some time to put your reviews about our property here.
Certain things we would like to clarify on the context of your comments.
As you felt that our restaurant is expensive; we would let you know that we are a five star resort and to maintain those standards, emphasizing on food safety and using A grade quality products which are expensive, we need to keep our pricing higher than those small standalone shacks/restaurants on the street where quality and food safety might not be a concern.
About the burnt gasoline kind of smell in the air, we do regret any inconvenience and also let you know it is feasible for us to control when the reason for something like that is happening within our property. But if it is happening somewhere else outside our property limits, and such smell is carried by the wind, we are sorry to say that we don't have any control over that.
And finally about the breakfast service; we apologize if you have not felt it comfortable to your desired levels. We have noted on that and will find out and rectify any wrongs with our restaurant service team . Assured that you will not have any such disappointments on your next visit.
Our team at Ammatarapura has always been reaching out to our valuable guests and are ready to go an extra mile to ensure ultimate comfort for them.
