“Great Place and Great People”

Mark and his family were great. This was our first trip to Europe and they helped us from the start. The room was great, and the food was amazing. The hotel is a lovely place in a beautiful setting. We really felt like we were on vacation.

We where there before, and again we were very happy.

One remark. It 's a pitty that they don't serve the tapa table at noon anymore.
This was a something typical spanish, and very nice food.

We will miss that in the future.

We booked this hotel having read both the reviews and the hotel website. We were disappointed. The hotel website says all five rooms have air conditioning, ours didn’t. This is an essential when I book but and thought I had got it wrong, a ceiling fan isn’t air conditioning.
The breakfast was basic, and presented without any choice.
This isn’t a 3 star hotel and we didn’t expect 3 star standards but we did expect some one to visit the room, do some basic cleaning and at least empty the bins during 3 days. We did find the meals expensive a chicken shared between 2 for 25 euro is expensive.
The location is excellent and the surrounding countryside outstanding.

We normally stay at home at Christmas but decided to have a Christmas in a hotel as friends were also staying at La Mariposa.
The owners of the Hotel, Sam and Mark could not have made us all more welcome, Tom the owners son is such a treasure and keeping us all amused with his wit and humour, the food was terrific and we found it difficult to see how they could put on such a spread for the money charged.
Live music all included and a great bunch of guests made our Christmas a special one and have now booked another 3 day special for Christmas 2009.
Well done to all involved and Thank you Sam, Mark and Tom.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2008

Arrived late Sunday lunch time but was not made to feel very welcome by Tom or the rest of the family throughout the stay. Perhaps this was because they had friends staying and seemed to ignore the other guests somewhat.

The twin room we had specifically requested and confirmed via a number of emails with the hotel, was a double. It was changed but the next guests to arrive who had also asked for a twin were allocated the double.

After travelling since 5 am we wanted to relax and have some food but were told that they couldn’t provide food not even a sandwich or bowl of soup which only takes minutes to make (no specific reason given). It wasn't packed; a table waiting and some people were just leaving who tried to persuade Tom to get us a sandwich but no luck. As there is nowhere else close this just added to the unwelcome reception we received.

When we finally had food in the evening the menu was OK but certainly did not appear to have the Spanish element advertised on other websites for the hotel. If you like fried food it is find as there is no choice of potatoes; chips the first night, the next night was to be fried wedges (big chips!) and the lunch we had was fried scallop potatoes. On ordering meatballs I was expecting the typical Spanish style in sauce; I actually asked if the sauce was very tomatoey before ordering. They said no, but didn't tell me that they would be dry fried meatballs with no sauce.

The rooms are reasonably spacious and clean and the setting, terrace, pool, pool terrace and views excellent.

The quad biking with Mark was also excellent and a good price. Mark and his wife didn't seem to socialise or welcome the guests much, which we were expecting based on other reviews, but perhaps this was because the friends were staying.

Perhaps we were just unlucky which was a shame as it spoilt the experience in this lovely location !

  • Liked — Great setting and lovely terrace. Swiming pool.
  • Disliked — Having to order evening meal in the morning and too much fried food.

We have to have a cut off point when serving Sunday lunches, if guests arrive late and DEMAND Sunday lunch and the kitchen is already preparing for evening meals then it is very awkward to stop what we are doing and cook a complete Sunday lunch (in 10 minutes) for 2 people, we ALWAYS offer an alternative but it is difficult at 6pm.
We would hope that all future guests would understand (and have reserched) that we cook and prepare many Murcian dishes which are available throughout the Murcia regionMurcia, as the majority of our guests are from northern europe we also try to keep them happy also by offering an extensive menu trying to cater for all nationalities.
We are an 8 bedroom hotel and our menu has had many fine reviews but it is obviously difficult to please everyone, we do ask that if people are eating in the evening that they choose thier meal in the morning this is so that we can organise fresh food rather than use frozen, we have never had a complaint before because people normally understand.
For instance Murcian meatballs are served without sauce but not everyone would know that, however the description on the menu is quite plain to see.

This is my 2nd time in Hotel La Mariposa (The Butterfly). It is a great place to be, great views, lovely food, great rooms and the best service by Tom and Cady.

This time i stayed for a week, a week walking, cycling, climbing and Mark (the hotel owner) organised some Hang gliding for me it was GREAT!!
I will Definetly be back in the winter to do some more walking, cycling and climbing.

This is th best hotel that i have been to!!!!
