We only stopped here for one night during our Garden Route tour but wished we could have stay longer. The accommodation is superb and the views fabulous. We also had the best food of our trip here - masses of choice, and what an experience it was to have steak, antelope or ostrich cooked on the grill. Just to round it off, the sun came out to warm us all up after a chilly start to our trip. Also went on a game drive and our guide was most informative. The staff here really care about the animals. This isn't the Serengeti, and the giveaway was the fact that the park's two elephants and the two lions are fed, so it isn't that much of a "wild" experience, but more of a large "zoo park." Nevertheless, there were plenty of other animals to look at and we were told the park is in the process of acquiring more land to extend its operations. The sad part is that it won't be long before places like this Game Lodge are the only places where animals will be seen in a semi-wild environment, such is the rate of slaughter. We were absolutely horrified to be told how many rhinos - hundreds every year - are being killed by poachers for their horns. The rhinos are left to die after their horns are cut off. The horns are then sold in the Far East, where idiots believe they have medicinal properties, which is absolute rubbish. At that rate there won't be any rhinos left in the wild in 10-12 years' time. So thank goodness for centres like the Game Route Game Lodge, which are doing their bit for conservation. How sad that the Lodge's two rhinos have to be guarded every night.
